I actually lived in "Upper East Tennessee" for a few years. The people up there sometimes talk about "The Lost State of Franklin," and a fair number of local businesses and things involve the name in some form. "Bank of Franklin," "Franklin used car sales," things like that. Your map was slightly incorrect. You got the Tennessee portion right, but there was also some territory in what is now present-day North Carolina. I used to have a map of their exact territory, but I've long-since lost it. Also, it was briefly called "Frankland" for a few months, until they decided that sounded stupid.
They applied for statehood, as you said, but Congress refused to discuss the issue because of some other problems that were going on at the time. After a few years of this, Franklin declared itself an independent republic and tried to gain recognition from some European countries. This annoyed Congress enough that they formed the modern state of Tennessee to resolve the crisis.

The State of Jefferson movement is alive and well today and actually has a chance at becoming the 51st state. They are suing the state of California for lack of representation, with the hope of forcing the mono party of California to let them go.
Also, a modern movement of the state of Lincoln has sprung up, but with the name of Liberty instead. It would be composed of the Eastern part of Washington.

Almost all of my ancestors of military age during the Civil War fought in the Union Army, although they resided in north Alabama. I didn't know this as a child and like most Southerners, I thought Robert Lee was a hero and William Sherman was evil. Then my parents broke the news to me in high school: many in my family were calvarymen that served directly for General Sherman in the march through Georgia and the Carolinas. They were actually rumored to have took a special interest in helping make Georgia howl. Their families in north Alabama were being starved, robbed, and tortured by Stoke Roberts' violent Home Guard: men that weren't fit to be actual soldiers, but delighted in harassing and attacking the families of Unionists. After hearing the stories of what these families suffered at the hands of Confederates and their sympathizers, I am glad that they brought misery to the planter society in Georgia and South Carolina. God Bless the U.S. and the First Alabama Cavalry, U.S.V. 🗡📯🇺🇸

I'm from South Florida, and I know every couple of years this issue comes up. And personally, I would love nothing more than to separate South Florida from North Florida. Culturally and politically we're very different with different interests. Back in 2014 the proposal came up, but was obviously shot down. I'd like to hear the history of this movement though.

I think if I'd read it quickly, there is a chance my dyslexic mind would've seen Desert & that would make sense too, since it's 1. I like the idea of Native Americans naming a state, especially if they could all agree. If not each would've to name counties instead. In fact it would seem right to me, that anyone that had grown up on a reservation, or who they've defined already, get a sum of money, like Alaska does. It wouldn't undo wrong, but maybe help them accomplish what they want for themselves & the next generation.for the record, I don't have any Native American ancestors. I just think they're still being held back. Where this would allow them to build schools, houses, whatever at the level they need to teach their remaining kids, & help them thrive. No doubt people won't agree, but the USA was all their land, till people colonized, & killed them either by bringing disease, or on purpose, then putting them on reservations...

The Transylvania Colony, also referred to as the Transylvania Purchase, was a short-lived, extra-legal colony founded during 1775 by land speculator Richard Henderson, who controlled the North Carolina-based Transylvania Company. Henderson and his investors had reached an agreement to purchase a vast tract of Cherokee lands west of the southern and central Appalachian Mountains through the acceptance of the Treaty of Sycamore Shoals with most leading Cherokee chieftains then controlling these lands. In exchange for the land the tribes received goods worth, according to the estimates of some scholars, about 10,000 British pounds ($1.5 million U.S. in 2016). To further complicate matters, this early American frontier land was also claimed at the same time by both the Province of Virginia (particularly following Lord Dunmore's War) and the North Carolina colony.
The Transylvania Colony was primarily located in what is now the central and eastern parts of Kentucky. The American pioneer and frontier explorer Daniel Boone was hired by Henderson to establish the Wilderness Road going through the Cumberland Gap and into southeastern Kentucky. Transylvania officially ceased to exist as a government entity in 1776 when the Virginia General Assembly invalidated the Transylvania Purchase.

Some of them that tried to become states in the early days of the US, before states were there are interesting.
But anything trying to carve a new state out of existing states is guaranteed to fail. The Constitution expressly prohibits this. Once a state exists, you can't break it into pieces. The one and only time that happened (West Virginia) was a side effect of the Civil War, and nothing short of another conflict that major could possibly break up any existing state.

@@General.Knowledge For DC to become a state, we'd need to amend the constitution or redefine the boundaries of the district. The easiest way would be to redefine the boundaries of the District as the area between the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol, with a jog out to include the ellipse and the White House. Then retrocess the rest back to the state of Maryland, and they'll end up with another representative after the census. Defining the boundaries of the district is statutory, but allowing the district to become a state in its entirety is not possible because of Article I, section 8 of the constitution.

Ok I guess I’m weird then because I know all 50 states and capitals, 5 territories and capitals, and the district plus the independent nations in compact free association. And I made sure when my niece was studying this in school that she likewise learned it. Easiest way to remember them is to break them up into regions if you’re a visual learner and picture the map. I can’t name them alphabetically.
I can definitely tell you’re not from Oklahoma by your pronunciation of the tribal names. Lol It’s okay, though. It was neat to see you include Sequoyah. That’s usually missing in articles and videos like these. So thanks for remembering it. You are correct. It was very important for the future state of Oklahoma. Our state seal, constitution, and much more are derived from the work already done from the Sequoyah Constitutional Convention. The Oklahoma Constitutional Convention whereby it had been decided to try for both territories to become one state relied heavily on the work done at the Sequoyah Convention. Without that convention and the work it might have taken much longer to achieve statehood. Fun fact: the panhandle of Oklahoma had organized itself into Cimarron Territory. It tried to get federal recognition, but Congress ended up assigning it to Oklahoma Territory. According to most reports at the time, the reason Sequoyah was rejected was because the political affiliation of the people in both territories was largely Democratic and the Congress and President were Republican. So they didn’t want to add 2 new states that would add more of their opposition political party. Oddly the proposed “Cimarron Territory” was And remains very Republican so Congress really goofed when they didn’t let it become a territory if it’s true that the denying the two territories separate statehood was for political purposes. Had they granted the panhandle territory status they could’ve admitted three states (or even four since there was conflict over Greer County between the states of Oklahoma and Texas that finally got resolved).
Great video as always! Really enjoy your channel!!

There was a period when Michigan's upper peninsula talked about breaking away from the lower peninsula to be named Superior. After the great lake on it's upper part. But I think they didn't have the revenue or population to be self reliant

Last semester, I took a class about US History between 1787 and 1860. During the Whiskey Rebellion, there were calls from people in Western Pennsylvania to create a State of Westsylvania, but instead Vermont and Kentucky became states.
Currently, I have heard of proposals to form a State of New California, where the rural more conservative counties secede from the radical liberal coast. They hope to become a state in the same manner as West Virginia, but I believe the 51st state should be Puerto Rico.

I've heard north and south Dakota tried to combine their size and form the state of "Dakota" but they failed when the Dakota territory split to two and both became states.
