      Well, since you asked...I think somebody should do an instructional video about sizing the fan(CFM) and the duct sizing(4"or6") all in relation to the tent size. That is what I was looking for on YT and that led me to your video called "What size carbon filter and inline extraction fan for my grow room?". And that's what led to my "I thought this would be about sizing." comment. I still enjoyed it and picked up some knowledge. It just was not what I thought it would be. I am a total newbie so for me, somewhere between videos that get in the weeds and over my head to the ones that are little more than unboxing with just about no usable information. Remember, I said "I think somebody" and by that I do not mean to imply that you personally should do this, just somebody to help us neophytes. I swear I don't mean to come across as the asshole I think I come across as. Peace.

      +puffer1958 Not at all my friend. You actually inspired me to make a better, follow-up video that gets more to the point and covers a variety of different sizing examples-as I think **this** is the video you expected and needed. I make videos with the beginner firmly in mind, so if-as a newbie-it left you wanting then a follow-up is most definitely required. I genuinely appreciate all feedback on my channel and believe me, you are one of the polite ones! Lol! :) In the meantime, if I can help you out with any specific questions on your planned grow then please always feel free to ask-as long as you're subbed ;-)

    At 3:18 I saw that you directly attached the fan to the wood framing. An old trick I saw was they suspended a plate with a motor. The weight rested entirely with 4 springs and the noise drop was HUGE!!! Try it

    hey everette... probably going to be purchasing my max fan and new phresh filter to battle this never ending smell issue . weve talked before and you are SO helpfull.....i commented a bunch on you orginial 8inch maxfan review i think? loved it!!!!
    that being said > THIS IS TODAYS QUESTION HAHA: im going to get the 10"maxfan (comes with speedcontroller) which is a 1065 c.f.m. fan...... and im looking at either the phreshfilter 10"x24 (840cfm filter) or so i want the 10"x39 (1400cfm rated filter) my question being.... do you want your filter bigger (10x39) and maybe the fan works too hard..?? or go with the smaller filter. THANKS SO MUCH for ALL your help... you really are my fav. youtube channel

      +northCALIFA Hey northCALIFA-great to hear from you, as always my green-fingered friend. Go for the 10"x39" (1400 CFM) filter. You filter's stated CFMs should be no more than your fan's CFMs. Always happy to help! Thanks for the positivity. Peace and happy growing, Everest.

    • @SaulTeebolz
      @SaulTeebolz 9 лет назад

      hmm. the filter is 1400 cfm the 10" hyper fan is rated at 1065 cfm.... so the filters cfm IS in fact larger.... am i missing something? :) sorry i am a little slow at times haha heres what im looking at. ebay.com/itm/221576984490

    • @Just4Growers
      @Just4Growers  9 лет назад

      +northCALIFA No worries. The CFM rating for carbon filters states the maximum airflow, so you are all good to use a fan with a lower CFM rating.

    • @Just4Growers
      @Just4Growers  9 лет назад +1

      You'll all good my friend. The thing to avoid is using a fan with a higher CFM rating than your filter, as you are dragging more air through it than it is designed to handle. So, with a filter that is rated for more CFMs than your fan, there's not issue as you're within its usage quota. So 1065 CFM fan + 1400 CFM filter = Awesome!

  • @matthaines7468

    Really great, informative video. Your room is impeccable. However, as you seem to be growing leafy greens and other vegetables, I'm wondering why you feel the need to filter the air being exhausted at all? Isn't the only reason to run exhausted air through a carbon filter to mask undesirable odors and keep the garden discreet?

    • @Just4Growers
      @Just4Growers  9 лет назад

      Hi Matt. Great question. I sometimes use the exhausted air from my garden's hoods and the garden itself to heat the upper floor in my house, especially in the depths of winter. The filter insures the air is odorless and free of particulates. I love tomatoes but don't want my living room smelling like a greenhouse. I highly recommend them for all indoor gardens, as recirculating scrubbers or inline filters.

  • @JohnSmith-fi3vx

    Hey Everest, I wanted to run a setup by you to see if I understand your process. If I have six 4x8 flood trays in a 9' tall room (4.5x48x9) I would need to exchange 1944 cfm. After factoring in the 20 percent filter loss two 10" hyperfans and one 6" hyperfan would be just sufficient as the cfm's would be ((1065x2)+315) x.8=1956. My current two extraction fans can produce 2062 cfm without filter loss, so with filter loss they would be producing 1649 cfm, meaning intake would outpace exhaust by roughly 307 cfm. Will it be damaging to the plants to have a slight exhaust deficit?

    • @Just4Growers
      @Just4Growers  9 лет назад +1

      David Gingrass Hi David. No, I guess you don't need to mount the fan, but you need to insure it's securely well to the carbon filter-and the carbon filter, in turn, should be positioned as high up as possible for the best ventilation effect. As for where to exhaust to-I strongly recommend outdoors-as you're removing not only heat but humidity too-and you don't want moisture levels building up indoors any more than you want heat issues.

    Can you explain the reasoning behind running a negative air pressure? I have read that running a positive air pressure helps minimize the risk of contaminating the grow space i.e. mites.

    • @Just4Growers
      @Just4Growers  7 лет назад +1

      +YouNeedToHearThis Thanks - awesome question. Negative air pressure helps with odor control if you’re growing smelly crops. I would always draw air through intake filters to mitigate the risk of sucking in bugs. There’s an argument that positive air pressure increases the physical amount of CO2 in the room too :) I will demonstrate both in upcoming vids.

    • @Just4Growers
      @Just4Growers  6 лет назад

      What size are your intake and extraction fans respectively please? Ideally your extraction fan should remove 20-30% more air (taking into account pressure drop from carbon filter) than your intake fan to maintain negative pressure in your grow tent. Positive pressure (balloon tent) isn’t such a bad thing it can just make it more difficult to control garden odors escaping into your home.

    • @Just4Growers
      @Just4Growers  10 лет назад

      tri to Good question Tri To. Check out my other video "Setting up Air-Cooled Reflectors: The Right Way" - ruclips.net/video/UUxsPDwVcD4/видео.html - it explains why you should blow (not suck) air over your lamps in order to create a positive pressure inside your air-cooled lighting system. Any leaks will simply blow air into your garden which will, in turn, be dealt with by your garden's ventilation system and any air filtration equipment.
      Alternatively, you could take a look at inline carbon filters (designed with a duct port at each end) and a duct booster fan to counteract the pressure drop.

    • @Just4Growers

    One question, should not the filter have a higher CFM then the fan? If the fan is stronger then the filter some smell will get through and out?

    • @Just4Growers
      @Just4Growers  8 лет назад +1

      +Toste Good question! It's a bit of a chicken and egg math problem this one. A carbon filter's stated CFMs basically says "I can clean air passing through me at X CFMs, no more please." A fan's stated CFMs says "I can move air at Y CFMs when I don't encounter any additional resistance," to which a filter replies sheepishly, "Ah sorry fan, I'm going to slow you down by 20 to 25 percent-sorry about that." You could reasonably conclude that you could get away with using a slightly higher CFM fan (20 to 25 percent) and that, given the air resistance created by the filter, the air would not be passing at a greater velocity than it can handle. My advice, to be on the safe side, is to ensure your fan and filter's CFMs are evenly matched.

    • @smitha2494
      @smitha2494 8 лет назад +1

      It's easy.. Multiply your total room cu ft x 0.75. Why? because filters restrain about 25% of the fan. Then divide that by 3-5 minutes most meaning that the air will be replaced every 3-5 minutes as desired. Then pick your filter size as close to the fan as posible never less and add a minute over due the restrictions, example.
      Room
      10x10x10=1000 cu ft
      1000x0.75=750 cu ft
      750/3 minutes=250 CFM needed to exchange the room every 4 minutes, it will in 3 without a filter. If you need more help give me your room specs..✌🏼️

    • @Just4Growers
      @Just4Growers  10 лет назад +1

      Justin Brower Thanks for your question Justin. That's a small tent-about 33 cubic feet. What is your light source? The six inch Hyper Fan shifts 315 cubic feet per minute-allowing for pressure if using with a carbon filter-maybe 240 CFMs at full power. Running at 35% using the included speed controller you're roughly looking at about 80 CFMs (35% speed doesn't necessarily equate to 35% of the CFMs!) - so that would be exchanging the air in your tent twice every minute-I recommend at least once a minute so you're well above that. Just keep an eye on relative humidity (especially at the beginning) to make sure it doesn't drop too low as you're always removing transpired moisture from your tent as well as heat. When your plants are mature and maybe crammed in a small tent ;-), you'll probably be glad you over-specced the fan! Always a good idea to give yourself the option of some extra oomph if you need it.
      Anyway-good luck with your grow and I'm here if you need me. Thanks for subbing the channel. Peace.

      My light source is a 400 watt digital dimmable grow light kit from iPower, I ordered the 17" cool tube and filter to run it through, I have a 100cfm fan but the temps were getting sky rocketed still, it's pretty humid here in Alaska, so humidity won't be a problem. I'm using my led light until the cool tube comes in next month. I was wanting to keep a negative pressure so I can stick my carbon filter strips on the vents it has made into the tent at the bottom. Great videos by the way, love them. Thanks again for the advice.

      haha she has good taste. Not that a brick enclosure (color wise) is productive for growing plants your cellar is neat looking minus the Sheetrock enclosure inside.

      Fatsacks Allday Hey Fatsacks, thanks for your comment. My general rule of thumb was based on growing heavy fruiting annuals to full maturity indoors. Most growers use air exchange to combat rising temperatures (from their grow lights) and relative humidity levels (from plant transpiration) in their indoor gardens-but the other important factor is carbon dioxide. Without supplementation, indoor growers are relying on atmospheric levels-currently around 395 ppms. Plants need eight photons of light to harvest one molecule of carbon dioxide. As your plants become larger their need for carbon dioxide increases exponentially. I sometimes refer to it as the 'glass ceiling' in many indoor gardens. Everything seems to be going fine when plants are small and then development slows to a crawl for the final few weeks. This is most often due to inadequate carbon dioxide as a result of insufficient air exchange.
      You may well find that exchanging your growing area's air volume every 3 - 5 mins works fine during propagation and early vegetative growth. Over ventilation at this stage can be detrimental to plants as it can strip the air of valuable humidity and raise vapour pressure deficit too high. But as your plants mature I recommend upping the air-exchange to at least once every minute.
      I'd be interested to learn more about your experiences so feel free to chime back in here or take a look at our Facebook discussion group if you swing that way. Oh-and please consider subbing the channel too. Thanks again. Peace and happy growing, ~Everest

    Your hyperfan looks like crap from China, and there is not even a temperature controller.
    And only 2x1000w on this fat room?
    You don't need any air cooled hoods with such room... That's a waste of money and lumens.
    Just install large adjust a wings and remove your air cool hoods on their air separate circuit... It is not needed.

      funkiestoyster I surveyed 1000 prisoners and found that 95% of them liked eating strawberries. But this does not mean that eating strawberries leads to criminal tendencies. Similarly, an informative video about fan sizing has to use SOME BRAND of fans. And, while it may be easy for you, arriving here at the tail end of a long line of causality, to wrongheadedly link my presentation to the promotion of a given brand, the only conclusion you should arrive at is that you can eat as many strawberries as you like, and the worst that can happen is that you get a mild skin rash.

    Boy, I like your channel and the info that you provide; but, the equipment that you use is very expensive, especially when a person is just start an indoor garden.
    So one has to suspect that you are mostly promoting and pushing certain products because you get them for free to test to promote on your youtube channel, right?
    Free advertisement for the manufacture, views and free equipment for you; but, on this side of the screen there just drooling over the equipment that you are installing in your mini profissional grow room, you know what I mean?
    Where can I get similar quality equipment that is not as expensive as the equipment in these videos? thanks

      Kenneth Elston Hey Kenneth-thanks for your thoughtful feedback. If you Google my name you will see that I have worked within the indoor gardening industry for many years, mostly as a writer and publisher. As such I enjoy good relationships with many manufacturers and wholesalers. That said, I use what I use because I believe it does the job well-not because I'm being paid to mention them. I am a grower, first and foremost-and I've been collecting grow gear for yeeeeeears. Sure I know the right people to call for the best price, but my hobby still costs me $$$$-but it's my passion. I'd be happy to recommend budget versions of any type of equipment you're looking for! Just let me know where in the world you are based and what your goals are. Oh-and don't forget to sub the channel if you want regular updates too! :) Peace and happy growing, Everest.

      Thanks for the reply, I downloaded an equipment checklist from your website that I will soon start acquiring the parts. I will certainly take you up on your offer to be guided to lower cost equipment that I won't regret buying or have problems with after buying due to poor construction.
      Keep up the good work sir and keep the gardening information coming, thanks for educating the masses.

      Kenneth Elston You're welcome Kenneth. Feel free to let me know what sort of gear you are looking for and any budgetary constraints and I'll do my best to help you. Don't forget about the secondhand equipment market too! There are bargains to be had. I don't recommend buying secondhand ballasts though.

      Funny you said that; I just visited a local hydroponics store today and they had a few used hoods, ballasts, and light kits that weren't too beat up at an okay price. But, not knowing a whole lot about the brands I didn't want to put my money in anything that I would be wasting my time buying. Plus the guy who was helping me kept pushing me to buy new equipment instead of wasting money on used equipment since I'm just starting out and have nothing but some seeds :-) He was really pushing this $380 600 watt ballast as a good low end to mid-range starting point for a beginner grower. Being the way I am (very frugal with my money); I get cautious when someone keeps pushing a certain product at me; that's one way to certainly have me not buy whatever they are pushing and possibly not shop in the store anymore.
      I do have 4 bulbs; 2 HPS 400 watt 2000k and 2- metal halide, 400 watt, 4200k that were given to me free by a friend who knows I want to start growing tomatoes and peppers indoors. Living in Alaska, we have a very short growing season if any at all. So, I thought that since I had the bulbs, I would just have to buy a hood for the bulbs a fan and get to growing. But, the guys at the store I visited today told me that I am still $500-$1000 from just having a complete light kit, WOW!
      In a way it's getting kind of discouraging when I look at just how much it's costing to grow food indoors. I was trying to get into a new hobby that's healthier and cheaper than my gun buying and shooting hobby. Gardening is ending up costing more than my shooting hobby :-(

      Kenneth Elston Hi Kenneth, you don't need to spend that much on a ballast. For around $250 you can buy a Galaxy select-a-watt electronic ballast that will run 1000W, 600W and 400W lamps (metal halide or HPS) - as you are just starting out I recommend buying versatile equipment like this. Just get an entry level / secondhand reflector to begin with and you can be up and running fairly economically. The Galaxy Digital Logic series have a built-in timer too which saves you money on timers and relays. Your ballast is the 'engine' of your grow room and is worth investing in. The rest you should be able to get together pretty cheaply on the used market.
