      0:39 Hear what she says. "As an individual, if you stand against a mob…" - we can't do it on our very _lonesome_ own. (Or even several times that; again: listen).

    • @johanponken
      @johanponken 6 лет назад +7

      Yeah, right, ydk (you don't know)… you don't, unless you _think_ . Again listen to what she says. Though now I have to ask you to listen a couple of seconds longer. As she says: you then need a lot of support. Which JBP has. So he's not a lone individual. And he didn't even start out as that, as he had an following for his lectures &c. It wasn't as big as it became, but it wasn't a lone voice crying in the desert either. Her advice is for the vast majority of individuals who are just, just not exceptional.

      @condew6103 5 лет назад +3

      Joost, You left out the most important part: "Unless you have others who support you, or an institution that has your back." This was not a call to inaction, it was a call to be prudent, know who your friends are, and organize.

    2nd to last part of her speech.
    I'm dyslexic and am not good at math as part of this. I had to drop out of high School in part of this. They system is designed to fail me do to no fault of my own besides not trying hard enough. But also living with clinical Depression Anxiety and PTSD. Living itself was almost as hard as I could try. I did this for years refusing medication. I got better on my own. School and drugs had nothing to do with the success I have had. I am in spite of all that holds me down. I may fail at life yet, but that itself will be my fault in turn.
    I am myself, only due to myself. This brings me an undescribable pride. Thank you for failing me. I will we spite you.

    It is a shame what happened to you and your wife but you should be proud of how you've both handled it. I wish you both the best, I'm a liberal who's been excommunicated by those who call themselves liberals and have seemingly taken over the left, I try to be open minded and understand other people, when I try to encourage this towards those on the right (because I fear the divide in our nation is at a breaking point & must be mended ASAP) I am dismissed via insult and accused of being right (or far right) wing. I am a liberal, not a socialist, not a Marxist, those are illiberal ideologies but the far left take over has pushed me to the right out of necessity, not in any policy sense just in the search for ally's to clean the left wing of the extremists who've taken over and I see people like you and your wife as kindred spirits in that sense so more power to you both. Best regards.

      @Gonzo the great, I assume you were being sarcastic and know that Bret/Heather were run out of their jobs as professors at Evergreen? If not I suggest both reading Bret/Heather's article on the topic, I think it was a NYT or WSJ op-ed but I could be mistaken, and checking out Benjamin Boyce's channel on RUclips. Ben has a few interviews with Bret/Heather and has done many many video's on the meltdown at Evergreen. if I had to sum it up in a sentence (maybe a run on so I apologize in advance) it might read: Bret was smeared as a racist for pointing out asking a group of people to leave a space based on their race is both segregation and racist so the SJW's at the school did what they do best, "protested", "rioted" as only weakling ideologue children can, and then got both Bret and his wife (because how dare she be married to someone so racist they oppose segregation) Heather fired from their jobs of over a decade. It's fucking heart breaking but it should be a wake up call even to liberals like me because it looked more like Maoist struggle sessions than an institute of higher education and makes those to the left of me who deny this problem look to be delusional at best. Great points in your last post though, nuance seems to have left the building in recent years and it is sorely needed, along with a few million pallets of benefit of the doubt, another thing sorely missing from politics/social media.

    • @DmncPalm
      @DmncPalm 6 лет назад +2

      @@gonzothegreat1317 Well of course I know of the grey area, but unfortunately sometimes with a more close minded person, it is easier to just give examples of which policies or arguments you side with quickly by given example of the party pushing it. I find it much easier to do this than to extend my hand in conversation with a stranger and be struck down, labeled as to have my argument somehow dismantled. Though in the presence of someone more willing to speak and listen, I don't take these precautions. Fair point though. 👍

    I understand that academics typically form groups of academics to further a set of ideals. There are people outside academia, people who work in highly skilled fields who want to help get these ideas to a wider audience and/or brainstorm as to how we may increase and improve debate. I have spent my life in computational science. I'm not sure how I can assist. I do know that people in my field have a tremendous amount of power (I prefer "value") when it comes to getting ideas out there. I think that because the academy has traditionally been "siloed" between different fields, there has not been enough cross-disciplinary discussion between engineers, computer scientists and, say, people in the social sciences, we have not maximized our utility to political thought leaders. How do we address that? How do we start that conversation? There's more that can be done (although this is *immensely* powerful,) than putting up lectures on RUclips. As the implementors of technological progress, we need to begin to explore these ideas.

    The only point i would have an alternate perspective on is wording of the statement that,
    "the scientific method is the best cure for human falibility ever divised."
    I would personally say that,
    "in most circumstances the scientific method currently proves to be the most reliable tool for exposing human falibility."
    The difference in these 2 statements being that the first statment exuded an air of superiority, that feels dismissive of other methods that could be more useful in certain situations. This second statment for me is more scientifically informative
