    This is so sweet! Loved watching you stitch. So cool that you've made a cottage industry with your talent. I think it would mean a lot to mommies to buy a handmade-with-love-dress.

    When you have a loop form by accident, it is easy to get out by using the back end of the needle. The point of the needle can weaken the floss as you dig out the knot, but the backend is blunt. The loopy knots do come out easily by pulling up the short center with the blunt end to loosen it and then the floss pull neat. I steam iron my floss after separating it to take it back to the original spin set before it was plied and reset. The single strand was two plies spun tightly. Being plied with five other strands loosens the individual strands. Sixty five years of embroidery and 40 of spinning and now I shall set down my embroidery and get to my loom. Thank you for the joy of watching you.

    I have ironed my floss, that helps with keeping it flat.

    Love, love your videos. I am new to smocking so I have to sometimes stop or replay parts of the video but sooner or later I'll get the hang of it. I love your manner, not too casual but not too formal. P.S. I have no idea how you can manage any of this with a new baby!

    Do you wet, smooth, and iron your floss before you smock with it? How many strands do you use for geometric designs and how many do you use for picture smocking? I LOOOOVE your videos!

    • @sarahclassicsewing
      @sarahclassicsewing  7 лет назад +1

      I pull them apart and smooth the tension out of them, but that's it. I typically do three strands for geometric until the fabric is really lightweight, then I may go to just two. I use four when picture smocking. And thank youuu :-)

    Hi Sarah, what is the best size pearle cotton to use for trellis , and would I need different size for picture smocking x

    • @sarahclassicsewing
      @sarahclassicsewing  4 года назад

      I wouldn't use pearl cotton for picture smocking. Picture smocking is best with four strands of embroidery floss. I prefer size 10 and 12 pearl cotton for geometric smocking. Size 12 is smaller and I think it looks really pretty on infant garments, while size 12 is a little bit bigger and I use for older babies/toddlers.

  • @koutlaw68
    @koutlaw68 7 лет назад

    Hi great video, I have never used pearl cotton what size do i use and do I use several strands?

    • @sarahclassicsewing
      @sarahclassicsewing  7 лет назад

      Thanks. Pearl cotton isn't like embroidery floss -- you don't separate it. That's why it's so easy to work with, you'll see once you get your hands on some. I like using size 10 most of the time, but size 12 looks really nice on delicate projects for newborns and such.

    • @koutlaw68
      @koutlaw68 7 лет назад

      I have been looking and now I feel kinda dumb about "how many strands" thank you so much, I am betting it will make my stitching look much better!

    • @koutlaw68
      @koutlaw68 7 лет назад

      One more question.... I can locate size 8 but 10 is a little tricky, will 8 be ok or do I need to look somewhere special?

    • @sarahclassicsewing
      @sarahclassicsewing  7 лет назад

      Oh, no need to feel dumb. It's hard to visualize this stuff online and finding a local store is just about impossible. :-) Eight is a little bit on the big side (at least in my opinion) for tiny babies, but it'll be okay for children's wear. I found size 10 and 12 at Michael's last time I was there. Any rate, give the size 8 a try and see if you like working with it. Farmhouse Fabrics as well as Amazon are also good options if you decide you like smocking with it. Happy sewing :-)

    Hi there,
    What type and size needle do you use for the shocking?

    • @sarahclassicsewing
      @sarahclassicsewing  7 лет назад

      Size varies depending on the fabric type, but I like to stick with sharps and milliners needles.

      Cotton batiste is generally my favorite :-) Imperial batiste is wonderful to learn on and great quality for the price. Farmhouse Fabric sells 60" wide for around $6/yard.

    Check out Sarah Homfrey's embroidery on RUclips. I learned from her to pinch all 6 strands of floss near the top and pull straight up on just the one strand. They pull out very easily. For some reason, I get A LOT fewer knots (which drive me crazy!)

    excuse me, I've never smocked before but I would like to use this technique instead of using elastics in my dresses. with my weight I often feel elastics create new "rolls" lol and I think smocking could prevent this. my question is should I cut my patterns from a size or two up? how much extra fabric do I need?

    Where can I get a pattern for a Bishop?

    • @sarahclassicsewing
      @sarahclassicsewing  4 года назад

      farmhousefabrics.com sells a few different varieties. cc Jamie is a great bang for your buck if you are sewing for babies, bit.ly/2cSSya4. and you can easily convert from a bubble to a dress. then there are two sizing options for the cc bishop bit.ly/2JShkHo and bit.ly/2xAJwqJ. there's another style with this shoulder closure (and I have a video tutorial on it too) bit.ly/2kSfp4z. and ofb has their own bishops, bit.ly/2TJ5HWw. hope that helps!
