A big hi from England. I was taught to sew over forty years ago by a very good school teacher and you are just as good in fact the best I have seen on RUclips. I haven't done any smocking but am inspired to have a go. Thank You.
I have been sewing since I was 10 years old, I am now 64. I have sewn everyday wear, formal wedding dresses, and attendants’ dresses, French Hand Sewing by machine & smocking, but I have never attacked a Bishop garment (I do smock.). I really enjoyed this tutorial because it has filled an empty place in my “sewing heart.”
I have a bishop angel wing pattern that I'm sewing right now and the angel sleeve is straight whereas your pattern has a slight curve to the angel sleeve I like that better. I may alter mine slightly. I also want to say I have viewed several smocking videos and bishop construction videos and your videos are the best ever. You get right to the point and therefor I can get right to my sewing. Keep them coming. Your daughter is just beautiful. I sewed smocked dresses and heirloom dresses for my daughter and kept them all these years and now her daughter, my granddaughter Charlotte (9 months old) is wearing them. When u sew it yourself you have the quality and a true heirloom as well as a classic that never goes out of style for generations to come.
Now it doesn't get much better than that, uh? Must be so precious seeing your garments for your daughter now on your granddaughter. Love it :-) Thanks for all your kind comments, you are too sweet.
Thanks for you talent. I’m new in this a like your work, here in Mexico we don’t have some like that, is difficult to see that wok . Can you share the models ?
I love all your videos! They are so helpful and beautifully done. I am just starting to smock dresses for my baby girl!! I love all your designs and have been referencing this video a lot lately. Thanks so much!
It's so easy to making a smock dress. but I can't make it because of I have not a pattern.if you give me it's measurements I will try to make it for my nice. Thank you.
I love your videos! You are so talented. They are so helpful. I don't see the links below for the bishop sewing though. Would you be so kind to direct me please. Maybe I'm just not finding them. Thank you in advance!
Oh hey there, long time... I think you were visiting from out of town? On a business trip or something if my (horrible) memory serves me correct. Anywho, glad to see you here :-)
can't find a link for that one, but this one is very similar. I used the tip of a soldering iron to melt holes in the lid of the organizer to be able to feed the thread through. amzn.to/2MidNT8 thanks!
Bushra khan Sarah used FrayCheck on the buttonholes. (Sorry, not sure of spelling of product). It keeps threads nicely bound. It is used so threads don't come loose when buttoning and unbuttoning over a period of time. It stabilizes the areas where buttons could cause a lot of wear going in and out of those tiny buttonholes. Hope this helps to answer your question. 😊
I love your videos. You are amazing. I want to try a bishop with angel wings. I want it to be very, very, very full. I have several patterns from my old issues of Australian Smocking and Embroidery magazines. First.... can I cut the front and back pieces selvage to selvage for fullness instead of what the pattern states and secondly ..... can I convert this to an angel wing? One pattern with the angel wing is 6 mo and I need 12 mo. Can I add the needed width and interchange sleeves?
Thanks Sandrea, you are too kind. Okay... so to answer your questions: When you are cutting selvage to selvage, is this 45" wide fabric or 60"? And what kind of fabric? For a 12 month size, you may be able to get away with using the full width of a 45" wide fabric if it's on the finer/lighterweight side. I'm not 100% sure though, never done it. The angel sleeve from a 6 month could be easily altered to fit a 12 month. I'd add about 1/2-1" on the length and maybe 2 inches on the width. And while I haven't made the Ellen McCarn pattern, I've heard that that smocked bishop is on the full side of life. Hope that helps, good luck.
Soo I'm thinking about this more, and really, in my opinion, you want to be able to see each pleat. I personally don't like them smashed together... so maybe you should angle the skirt fabric out so you get a fuller fabric? Just a thought.
Do you ever put up the smocking plates that you have used? I especially was interested in the Gwen dress since you pleated the dress with the needles at the half marks. Thank you and I have enjoyed your tutorials.
Hey there Kathy... saw your emails pop in, I'll try to answer them tonight or tomorrow morning. Okay, most of my smocking is kinda made up as I go along. I sometimes get ideas from pinterest or other smocking plates. Here are close up photos of gwen - www.sarahclassicsewing.com/cc-gwen.html. Thanks so much for your feedback and questions :-)
thanks for this great video! I've been watching this one and your betsy to put together my first bishop. I'm doing the angel sleeves and that's the only part I'm confused on...will the casing be sewn over part of the lace when I fold it over?
Hey there, I have an updated way to put together a bishop here ruclips.net/video/nKD8WhdKXcE/видео.html. But as far as the casing and the lace... I'm not really understanding your question. Are you talking about the arm binding under the sleeve? Yes, that will be sewn over the lace edges (that's how the raw edges of the lace are hidden). Let me know if that answers your question :-)
hmmm. Is the binding sewn in line with the lace/sleeve edge seem or the shoulder seem? I did it an 1 1/2" into the shoulder seem and I think that's where I went wrong. Does that make more sense? I think I've got it now :)
Another question. Just finished a bishop dress with gathered band sleeves. Sewing 7 inch band on full gathered sleeves is a hot mess. What is the best way to make these? Love watching your videos!
@@sarahclassicsewing is used an Ellen Mccarn bishop dress. It's an. Older pattern that has several different versions of the bishop. I made a 3 month size.
Simply Beautiful! Do you ever sew adult clothes on video? I've seen the video where you make a new white dress for each anniversary and I think that's Special.
Can yu please give me the exact measurements for cutting the front , back and sleeves for a 6 month as I am doing this for the first time and don’t know the measurements please
Can you give me advice about how to make a yoke dress? The pattern says to smock the yoke first, then cut out the armholes and put the dress together. I like your method of making the dress first, then smocking. However, I don't know how to make it if the armholes are cut out.. Thanks for your help!
I am already working on a video showing how to block smocking -- it's in my computer now. You're going to use freezer paper to hold everything together so you can zigzag around the armholes and keep the pleats together. Then you can smock later on. The video should be out within the next week or two. Thanks :-)
Okay, just kidding, I wrapped up the video tonight. In the video, I joined a smocked insert type deal, but the concept is the same as a fully smocked yoke dress. I hope it helps you.
I am making my first bishop. Your video is so helpful! Where do you get your smocking patterns? I particularly love your flowers. Do you have a pattern book? Thanks so much!
Thanks so much, and welcome to the world of smocking :-) Generally I make up the smocking plate as I go along, but pinterest is a wonderful place for inspiration, too.
HELP! I am having trouble with the binding on the angel sleeves. When I extend the binding up into the sleeve area... as you say and everyone else does... if there are TINY TINY FRENCH SEEMS so that I could run it thru the pleater.... what do I attach it to . I don't have much seem to attach to ! WHAT AM I DOING WRONG. hoping the light bulb will come on!
Yeah.. you didn't do anything wrong, you'll only have a small seam to attach this onto if you want to stitch in line with the stitching from your tiny French seam. You can stitch slightly away from it, and that won't be noticeable. Or if you want to be in line with your tiny French seam but can't do it on your machine, you could stitch by hand. Personally, I stitch right in line with my tiny French seam using my machine and I've never had an issue - although it's not my favorite thing to do. Hope that helps, good luck.
no wine.... but a cold beer and I GOT IT!!!!! I FINALLY GOT IT!!!! and yes it was small (learned from you .... tiny french seem to go thru that pleater like BUTTA!!! ) but I was able to stitch it to the arm seem!!!
Hey Charlotte, you are too sweet, thank you. I cut the sleeves using the pattern -- not sure how long/wide they are. The pattern can be found here bit.ly/1NzaPnq. Thanks again.
I don't mean to sound like a snob, but you can only hand smock. Sorry, that's a pet-peeve of mine :-) The machine-like smocking is a flavor of machine-embroidery/decorative stitching that department stores and such are trying to sell as smocking. You can hand and machine pleat, though, if that's what you're talking about. I mainly pleat on a machine (Amanda Jane), but I've done hand pleating as well.
