Pleating & Embroidery Stitches with Beads: Learn English Smocking

English smocking is embroidery on pleated fabric. A delightful way of adding decorative stitches to a garment and at the same time creating some elasticity and fullness. For most projects, you can use good-quality cotton or lightweight wools, silks, batiste, linens, muslins, or polyesters. The embroidery floss should be suitable for the weight and texture of the base fabric. Most smocking stitches are a variation of the basic backstitch done through pleats.

I have a smocking pleater. Much easier than the dots. Learned to smock 24 years ago from books, so I could make smocked dresses for my daughter.

Good gracious. This takes me back. We had transfers of smocking dots that were ironed onto the reverse of fabric, after which we picked up the dots.
