I haven't seen this movie in a long time, I might return to it now. It sounds like Tom had a Platonic view of love at first, but realized it has to be based on shared values between two people, not on ideas detached from reality.

popping in to say yes! tom and summer is a lot more complex than just a black and white who's right and who's wrong, it's about the emotional attachment both of them put into the idea of being with each other being different and both of them never wanting to further the discussion about it.
there's a lot to unpack for both tom and summer and ultimately they never unpacked their own emotional baggage and the breakup is the only logical consequences of it.

@@Schloetz it’s not much of a romance story (although the title might be a bit deceiving) there is a love story in the movie, but I’d say it prominently represents the volatile relationship between accepting our circumstances or actively working to shift our perspective in order to try and be happy despite the events out of our control that may seem to dictate our lives.
