Kidneys play a vital role in balancing fluids in the body. When kidneys fail, this delicate balance gets disrupted, which can lead to fluid building up in the lungs, a condition called pulmonary edema. Here's a breakdown of why this happens:
* Fluid Overload: Healthy kidneys remove excess fluids and waste products from the blood. In kidney failure, this waste accumulates, and the body retains too much fluid.
* Pressure Imbalance: Normally, a balance exists between the pressure in the blood vessels and the pressure in the lungs. When fluid overload occurs, the pressure in the blood vessels increases.
* Leaky Vessels: The increased pressure in the blood vessels can damage the delicate lining, causing them to leak fluid into the surrounding tissues, including the lungs.
* Lungs Filling with Fluid: The fluid leaks into the air sacs (alveoli) of the lungs, which are meant for gas exchange (oxygen in, carbon dioxide out). This fluid fills the air sacs, making breathing difficult.
Additional factors in kidney patients:
* Weak Heart: Kidney disease can sometimes weaken the heart, further contributing to fluid buildup in the lungs.
* Protein Imbalance: Low levels of albumin (a protein) can also worsen fluid leakage from blood vessels.
