      If I had to introduce someone to metal, with all the overwhelmingly different variations out of there, Painkiller would be a solid choice. Even if there are so many more modern variants of metal that sound completely different, it has an iconic aesthetic that will never die, so long as metalheads live.

    "Painkiller" is more of JP trying a new sound out for the 90s. Their classic sound can be found more in songs like The Ripper, Island of Domination, Tyrant, Dissident Aggressor, Invader, Starbreaker, Evening Star, Beyond the Realms of Death, Delivering the Goods, Metal Gods, United, Solar Angels, Heading Out to the Highway, You've Got Another Thing Comin', Electric Eye, Freewheel Burning, Some Heads Are Gonna Roll...to name a few.

    • @davearonow65
      @davearonow65 4 года назад +5

      They are not trying out a new sound.
      What they are doing is playing the music they would have done from the very beginning if they had a drummer back then that could play like this. Which they didn't.
      So they didn't.

      I disagree. Judas Priest had something to prove. And with Painkiller, they did. I remember when it came out-tore my head off. This was Priest doing what they always done, and then shoving it into the red.

    • @independenceltd.
      @independenceltd. 3 года назад

      @@ferox965 I remember it coming out too. And i thought, "Here's Priest following another trend like they did with Turbo. Thank God it's better than "Ram It Down'". There's a reason they were touring with Megadeth and Testament, which was a great tour BTW.
      Painkiller is a good album but nowhere near their top 5, and I'd take Firepower over it any day.

    This was basically the introduction of Priest's new drummer Scott Travis. Scott's previous band was Racer X, an LA shred-metal band led by guitarist Paul Gilbert (who later started Mr. Big). Racer X was very Priest influenced, their singer Jeff Martin was friends with Rob Halford (singer of Judas Priest), and they even performed an unreleased Priest song "Heart Of A Lion." This song is almost like part 2 of a Racer X/Judas Priest superhero trilogy, starting with Racer X's Motor Man and ending with a reunited Racer X's Superheroes.

    1 interesting bit of trivia about this band is the lead singer became one of the first openly gay heavy metal singers, and no one gave a damn which was awesome. In fact the early popularity of leather in the metal Community can be traced to him, because this is what guys were wearing in the gay community and so he brought it over to his stage persona. At the time no one knew that.

    It's interesting looking at the recommendations for Judas Priest, and views on "Heavy Metal". Judas Priest really are the Godfathers of Heavy Metal. When British Steel came out, it was a departure from some of their earlier stuff, and was a tightly produced album that I still love. The Rage from that album is really good. As far as other songs to check out, try Green Manalishi. In fact, would love to see you react to "Judas Priest US Festival 1983 The Green Manalishi", as I was in the crowd somewhere for that. Halford rode a chopper up onto the stage, and it was awesome. Good live look at them when they were in their prime.

    I lturned to my brother and said, "Look at that dirtbag". He said, "That's Rob Halford!" I didn't believe him. The next day we woke up to see a Judas Priest tour bus in the parking lot. My brush with greatness. Lol!
