    No matter what this song was written about, the blatant truth and maturity to these lyrics is so impressive to me. I think you can apply it to so many things, personal or social. I love the guitar solo. Such a rare animal in a DD song and it ends up being this mellow, yet funky, groovey sound that doesn’t scream guitar solo. I’d love for anyone that thinks DD can only make dancey pop hits to listen to this song and guess the artist. 😂

    Such a smooth groove to this song, I love it!! It brings back memories when the album came out, I had a convertible & would cruise around with this song (whole cd really) on blast, perfect for nighttime cruising ❤️🎶

    I wonder if anyone else see that the last 5 tracks on the Astronaut album are telling a complete story. We see the "Finest Hour", but we were holding in "Chains", always living "One of Those Days" until we came to the "Point of no Return" and after all we are "Still Breathing". Or I am the only one with that?

      Oh wow! I shot my reaction to "Still Breathing" earlier tonight, but I'm now wishing I had read your comment first. But I'll definitely go back and listen to that block of tracks together and explore that possibility. Thanks for the great comment/idea!

    I don't know what the consensus about Astronaut is among the Duranie community, but goddamn how I love this album. I honestly think it ranks in my personal top 5, if not in my top 3, in their whole body of work. They didn't try to do something radically different like Medazzaland. They just delivered an excellent album that does what they do best : creating moods and spurting out viral melodies with an effortless mastery. Not to mention Simon's magic with words and vocal performance. Point of No Return is a proof of that, among others.

      My consensus is that it is a strong, solid and accessible album which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but I think that is what it isn’t one of “my” favorites. I’m not saying that is a bad album at all but I have always appreciated their darker artsy side more than their poppier mainstream music.

      His album is also in my top 5. The feel of it, the cohesiveness, the mature songwriting and layered instrumentation - I love it! It just seems SO “Duran Duran” to me.

    One of the better Astronaut tracks, written after the band witnessed the Twin Towers crumble as they were in NY at that time (where their management are based).
    I do feel the latter half of the album is the strongest and the direction the band’s music was heading for Reportage

      If they'd only replaced Taste the Summer with Salt in the Rainbow it would have been the ideal B-Side to the album.

    Hi Matt, moody reflective mature melodic and thoughtful, a great song, I'm never sure if Simon is saying we're at the point of no return or if we're heading for the point of no return🤔 but I've said this before this is an example of one of Britain's greatest song writers who has never been recognised as such🤷‍♂️LENNY

    Point of no Return...oh yes, this is how I love my DD...such a lovely song. Moody but with a nice beat. Everyone in the band sound so good here! But you are right, should had ended differently...not a good fadeout.

  • @philipmcfarlane
    @philipmcfarlane 2 года назад +2

    Yeah that's a fade out that screams we don't know how to finish this. On songs that build up to become epic towards the end I can understand the fade out as it means that you don't have to bring the song back down again and potentially take way from the feeling that you were trying to convey.

Put it this way, the Nu Shooz song called Point of No Return is a lot better than the Zaba da bow one. DD are a much better band, but let the Americans have this one little victory over this song title!

    Hey man, Im kind of sad you are getting close to the end of the DD reviews.... But I'm going to keep watching your channel. Maybe not everything as some of the genres you listen to I'm not that interested in, but I do like your channel and will be checking out your pop/rock reviews for sure!

      Yeah, I had a similar feeling while preparing to do these videos. Still lots of remixes, b-sides, and so on, as well as the solo material from some of the guys, but you're right---it feels a bit sad.
      Admittedly, a little down the road, I'm thinking of doing a "Second Look" series, in which I come back for a second bite on certain songs, but now armed with the knowledge about their lyrics, composition, etc. Obviously that will be more selective, but it could be interesting, perhaps.

    "As we watch the tower falling down" at 2004......yeah it is a call for being a political agent to the change you want to see. the opening is so amazing: The random aspects of our lives
    Come together once in a while
    So blinding and decidedly
    Naivete falls from our eyes
    And we'll not regain
    As we watch the tower falling down"
    and regarding this journey well....dare i say: John Cale? would love you to do the smiths? but regarding DD: what about The Secret Policeman's Third Ball?

    • @mattsnider2667
      @mattsnider2667  2 года назад +1

      Well said about those lyrics. And I've never heard of that album? Is it a proper studio album from them?
      And as I mentioned the other day, I would love to react to those John Cale albums, but I just don't have the albums yet (nor are they in the archives I now have access to). So again, you have my word I'll get to them eventually, it just might take some more time.
      That said, I have a few Smiths tracks on my computer (including my favorite, "Bigmouth Strikes Again"), so I could react to some of their material sooner.
