    Louis - Thank you so much for this video!! It saved me $2,600 dollars. The plumber wanted to take the tub out to get to the plumbing and take care of the issue. He also suggested that since the tub was coming out, why not put a new shower with new tiles, upgraded faucets, etc. Note, this plumber is also an acquaintance of mine and he said that he was giving me a break. My wife was all for it since he was going to pull everything out, however, I view several RUclips videos and came across yours. It made sense to try it. I went down to the Home Depot, bought the gasket, replaced the old one and guess what... ...no more leaks!! Thank you again!!

    Great illustrative video. White board and props a nice touch. I had assumed my leak was in the drain cover and plug. Will now look into the overflow gasket. Thanks.

    This I think will fix my leaking problem. Thank you so much! The first thing tomorrow I will be spraying water on the overflow area to see if it leaks. This leak seemed to be intermittent therefore the water didn't always hit the cover and cause a leak. Excellent!!

    Lou, I like your presentation & breakdown, it was very educational,& understandable, I am in the process now of trying to figure where the leak is coming from in our bathtub, unfortunately the shoe is leaking, right at the elbow part, so i am going to replace the whole assembly, which i beleive include the part you talked about.. Thanks Lou for the advice.

    Brilliant! I had just figured out that the gasket was the problem on my downstairs tub, and now I know how to install a new one! I was wondering about the thickness differences. After watching your video, I realized (duh!) that a bad gasket was probably contributing to the upstairs bathtub leak, also. (Just replaced part of my downstairs ceiling after a house guest used the upstairs shower.)
    Given your obvious deep well of knowledge and experience (thank you so much for taking the time to create this video), I have two questions, however. 1. Are all overflow drain gaskets the same size? This may be a dumb question, but I want to be sure; the faceplates seem to be a standard size, so I am hoping the gaskets are. 2. Do you have any sage wisdom on how the heck to deal with water seeping from the BACK of the tub, onto the floor, and coming through the downstairs ceiling? The upstairs tub has a powerful shower. Could it be the calk between the wall tile and the tub? Is there any way to prevent the water from splashing off the back wall onto the floor? Shower curtains don't seem to be foolproof. Is a sliding door the only answer and do they still even make them that go over a tub? (I haven't seen them in a while.)
    Thanks for ANY help!

    I had the exact problem described above. Unfortunately, I could not access the overflow gasket for easy repair and replacement. It was concealed inside the wall behind the tub as shown in the video. There was no way for me to get to it. :(
    My fix was to apply "Dap" bathtub caulking around the edge of the chrome face plate on the inside of the tub. That prevents my splashing water from going down the inside of the wall into my basement. The ceiling tile in the basement was getting soaked with water dripping from the tub above. So far, it is working.

    The overflow gasket description is (unintentionally???) completely wrong (top vs bottom, fat vs thin). The thin portion of the gasket is designed to be at the TOP and the fat portion at the BOTTOM. Plus, turning the gasket sideways gives a poor fit all the way around. If the sidewall of your tub is NOT sloping but straight then a non-beveled gasket should probably be used.

  • @carolinem.9800
    @carolinem.9800 3 года назад

    you might also note a leak can come from the tub's m ain drain gasket which fits onto the drain shoe elbow . a bad uneven putty job under the shoe strainer, , or deteriorated gasket on he shoe elbow will cause tub to leak when bathtub is filled. the tub stopper seal can go bad from deteriorated putty or a bad gasket both.

    Why do they always put tub gaskets BEHIND the tub or UNDER it instead of on the inside of the tub-where there is a guarranteed smooth surface to seal against? The water still has to get past the gasket in order to leak, either way. I don’t get it.

Then as i was trying to put a new trip lever the pipe fall apart was i tried to screw the cover the holds the trip lever. Went behind my bathtub since theres a small closet then i notist the old part was way below the pipe i wasent able to take it out. Then tried to put the pipe in it's place but it's leaking water and my water is still not draining. I'm scare to call a plumber because there not cheat they are expensive.
