The Two Lane Blacktop 55 Chevy comes out of hibernation

  • The last time I saw this car back in July 2018, it wasn't running due to a wiring issue under the dash, its not been on the road since then...until now. The current owner David sent me this video today (May 11th 2020) as he has now got it up and running again. I'm hoping to visit Ohio again later this year (Covid 19 not withstanding) to start work on the film about Richard Ruth the builder of this car back in the early 70's.

Probably my all-time favorite hot rod movie....low-budget, minimalist, crude, but BAD-ASS ! James Taylor, Dennis Wilson, and Warren Oates had that magic chemistry. Better than all those bogus "Fast and Furious" movies put together....side note: Laurie Bird ("The Girl") was found dead in musician Art Garfunkel`s apartment several years later....

Two Lane Blacktop - love the movie and the 5-5 ! 55 Chevy brings back a lot of memories for me. Had one from 1967- 1970. Last motor was a 500+ hp 331ci Corvette motor w/Pontiac Muncie 4 speed, and a 4.11 (street) posi rear. Painted 69 Caddy Sapphire Mist Blue. w/4.88's and set up to race, ran the quarter best 11.96 at 114+mph. Off the line at 3800, shift at 7800 ! Selling that car (1970) after all the time, effort and $ was big mistake (sigh) !

If that is the camera car (which I am almost positive it is), that was sold to one of the mechanics that worked on TLBT after filming. It wasn't used in Graffiti. They got the other 2 and the stunt car that was supposed to be rolled at the truck accident scene in Two Lane (stunt car had radiused wheel wells but a metal front with a different hood scoop and silver steel wheels). This car was found somewhere east of Vancouver in Canada in a classified section advertised as just "A 55 Chevy Race Car" or something to that effect. The only other survivor got turned into a pro street custom with an absurd paint job and tweed interior and resided in Maryland or Virginia. I am going off of memory from the magazine article I read almost a decade ago. I heard from friends that have seen it that the owner is a really super cool guy that truly loves the hobby. Other things I vaguely remember was that it was missing the original hood scoop but Ruth still had the template in his shop, the LS6 was missing, but it had the fiberglass body parts (Graffiti used metal doors), M-22 and Olds rear in place and it was bought really cheap considering what it is. Thanks for the update on what it is doing now. And for the guy asking if the Buick GN was inspired by this? Molly's original concept GN was burgundy, the 215 '82 GN's were mostly 4.1 N/A's painted like a WH1. I've had a couple TR's, so that comment stood out. The coolest LC2 car made was the black WO2's withhe chrome bumpers that they cancelled after the first 90 days that gave the '87 cars the moniker of "Turbo T" instead of "T-Type". Cheers to all of you car nuts that also love these somewhat obscure instruments of amazement.

LS6 engines were used in the two camera cars , one was used for exterior shots looking in , the other camera car was set up for interior shots with dialog both of those cars had hidden air conditioning units , to keep the actors from roasting . Ever notice that the windows were never open while going down the road ? The actual race car had a L-88. , 427 in it and that's what is making that beautiful music that everyone loves . Next time you watch Graffiti pay attention to the sound of Falfa's car , they lifted the sound from TLB because the race car was way too wicked to be cruised around town so they substituted a camera car .

The exterior was a beautiful navy blue with a white rolled and pleated interior, (no back seat). Carried a 656 Olds rear and
spinned a pair of Mickey Thompson slicks. This car could not be beat in a quarter mile. The Owner/Driver was known to

55’s are the baddest & sexiest of the 50’s Chevys in my humble opinion. I gotta also say, that I dig the grey worn out tone on the Chevy/Two Lane Blacktop than the gloss black paint job that was on it in, American Graffiti. However I wish they kept the skull 💀 mirror decoration cause it really tied the car together haha!

Nice. I live near there. The drag strip itself is long gone. An outlet mall was built next to it many years ago and eventually shut down/ abandoned and the track remains were overgrown in the woods . Last I was out there , the woods were being cleared out and there was a subdivision being built. The main entrance into the subdivision appeared to be where the strip was.

Well yes and no, this particular style is a bit of a hybrid really, generally speaking gassers are higher in the front, due to a beam axle and also skinnier wheels up front too. There are other more subtle differences too.

Clearly there are a lot of mis-informed people out there who think they know all about this car. "It was painted black for American Graffiti", "There were 50 of them" (That one is hilarious) and various other ill informed ideas. Here are the facts. There were THREE 55 Chevys built by Richard Ruth for the movie. One of them (Clearly not this one), was indeed sprayed black and modified for American Graffiti, that leaves two, this is one of those two, the buyer in this video, is the person who now owns this car, it is the car from the movie Two Lane Blacktop, the car that had the windows taken out for filming, and had platforms fitted on the side for the camera crew, this is all documented in many ways, in books and by the people who have owned the car over the years. So please my little troll friends, do your research, get your facts straight before posting ill informed comments on this video, as all you're doing is making yourselves look stupid.

I was just recently telling someone about the movie, of course most people have never seen, and here. Is the car! It is one of my favorite car movies because it depicts what the gear heads that I went to high school would do such as putting their limited budgets into performance parts rather than fancy hood scoops or paint jobs. The rich kids got new Firebirds, Boss Mustangs, and Corvettes, while the real gear heads would get something like this from a junkyard or buy it from some old lady whose hubby had passed and would build it themselves. Guess whose car would be quicker? This car was the star and JT, Wilson, and Oates as supporting actors were so realistic in their deference to it. It is so wonderful that someone has saved it from rust and obscurity. It makes me feel reassured as when someone’s missing toddler is found safe and sound.
