Installed a 12kw woodstove as we have quite high ceilings, 5kw would have done the job lol! Great series. Just on the sealant tool; I found the rubber wore away quickly (akin to an eraser atop a pencil) and as you couldn’t buy replacements, spent a little more and bought the Fugi. I’ve used that set loads and it doesn’t wear away. Great if you’ve lots to do or use the kit often.

    Hey 👋. Sometimes I get the urge to write some short thought pieces but never know where to put them. This one vaguely relates to this video so I thought I’d post it here. Let me know what you think 🙂
    *Spend on the inconveniences, not the luxuries*
    Home renovation requires a multitude of choices: paint colours, taps, light fixtures but how do you sort between where should you go all out and where the savings should be made?
    ---
    At 25 years old my best friend and I arrived at LAX, California after two months in South East Asia with just a backpack and some dwindling savings. After sleeping off the jet lag and being shouted at by the motel management in a welcome-to-America moment we made our way over to the car rental pickup. My friend, gifted in the art of persuasion, managed to land us a triple-tier upgrade by generously offering to take their Louisiana plated Dodge Charger* most of the way back to its home state.
    And oh it was glorious! Tiptronic gear changes, leather seats and more gizmos than I know the name of. We were riding in style.
    After a month of taking in the sights of the American Southwest, we dropped the car off at Dallas, Texas and something curious had happened. The joy we had experienced those few short weeks ago had subsided, the gizmos went mostly unused and the car, while a very comfortable ride, had fallen in our graces to something that merely got us from point A to point B.
    Roll forward a few years and my vehicle of choice was an old Ford Focus. It too got me from A to B but the air-con had failed and stuck in London traffic on a hot day was a nightmare. Re-gassing the air-con would have cost more than the car was worth so I put up with it. When I was finally able to upgrade, it was absolute bliss to no longer drive around in a greenhouse on wheels, and that pleasure hasn't gone away until this day.
    ----
    See the trend? It's the same with home renovation.
    Those designer taps? Probably not worth it. Howdens' will do just fine.
    Bright LED downlighters that don't need to replaced for a decade - totally worth it. Multi-coloured, flashing LED strips on your garden room soffits? Once you've shown them off to your mates that one time, they're unlikely to be used again.
    An Amazon Alexa synced home set-up that controls your lights, heating, tv and curtains, with the complication of apps, set-up and updates every few months, and if it goes wrong you're left in the dark or perhaps everything goes Home-Alone on you? Well you get the picture, no one ever complained about the light switch before.
    ---
    It's a tricky line to tread but if you focus on removing the inconveniences from your life rather than the 'that's cool' stuff, you'll generally make the right choice. Of course, if you happen to geek out over cars, home automation or garden rooms, then that’s different 😉

      This is something I've learned over the last few years, too. During our (admittedly slow) house renovations, my initial plans were to automate a load of stuff, have fancy things dotted around the place, etc. Renovating slowly, though sometimes tedious, has brought with it not only a deep-seated admiration for well-skilled tradespeople, but it's softened my desire for the latest and greatest or the fashionable. I've fallen in love with our home's tradition and heritage. Instead of splashing out on modern things like home automation etc., we've instead spent money on things that will sometimes remain unseen, but will give our home another 100 or more years of life. It feels like we should give this house the love it deserves after being neglected for quite a while. Original plans like wanting the walls to be true and plumb have been replaced with new plans to embrace their oddities (they tell stories, you know!). I now buy fittings and fixtures based on build quality rather than whether they're "designer" or fashionable. It'll just save money in the long run, and, most importantly, we'll end up with a house full of things that we actually use and will last.
      Oh, while I'm here, a huge thank you for the videos, they've been incredibly useful!

    Great video as always!! Just a note regarding your dimmer switches, assuming they are LED bulbs... always try to use a trailing edge dimmer switch instead of a leading edge. If you notice your dimmer switch making a “humming” noise you’ll need to change the dimmer module... easy mistake to make (which I did myself...)

    Thanks Ali... another great video. All the garden room videos I have seen have laminate over real/engineered wood for the flooring. What’s the rationale behind that do you think, is it cost, design preference or is there a functional element too (e.g. risk of moisture)?

    • @AliDymock
      @AliDymock  3 года назад +1

      Cost I’d say. Check out the ‘Your Builds’ on my website, there’s tile, real oak flooring etc that people have used. For me it came down to cost, there’s no reason other that not to go for something fancier.

    • @AliDymock
      @AliDymock  2 года назад

      Maybe but the downside is the amount of space you lose as the wall ends up being significantly wider especially if you go with a 100mm cavity as per new build regs. That's 300mm before adding any kind of finish inside or out. Certainly an option though, I wouldn't rule it out and depends on your comfort with different materials (I like timber) and you space.

    Hardie board isn't waterproof...... to make it waterproof you need to add a tanking membrane. Hardie is a great product.
    You only need 6mm for the floor and porcelain tiles will not adversely affect the weight, for the foundations, with such a small area covered.
