    So as I understand it, the doorknob is much larger than it needs to be.

      I watched a little more and saw the explanation with the chart showing the scale and see it now. Thank you. Very big. Much larger, really, than it needs to be.

    "Is it even bigger than a breadbox."
    I don't know how well known this is, but if people are unaware, this was likely an homage to Steve Allen. Allen asking, "Is it bigger than a breadbox?" was a running joke when he was one of the regular panelists on 'Whats My Line?'

    • @LeeKav

      At least, I assume it was on the part of the letter writer. Whether Dave/his writers were watching WML in 1951 and got the reference is probably less certain.

    Dave was certainly wacky, his comedy requires thought. He liked awkward situations, and messing with people's mind, but he was always straight with the audience.

      On the money. Elements of his show were social media video before social media video, most obviously the dropping stuff off of buildings or crushing them with a pneumatic press.

    It's funny, according to Zinoman's book Letterman had a giant fight after the elevator banks segment with Merrill Markoe about putting the giant doorknob in without his knowledge and that he didn't like being surprised like that and yet in the actual clip, he seems to take its appearance in stride.

    • @LeeKav

      Incidentally, if I ever get around to it, is that a good read? And more importantly, am I happier with my own impressions of an entertainer I'm fond of than I would be with the person portrayed in the book (to judge by a few comments), and should just leave it?

      Don't know what happened to the Giant Doorknob. I love the Viewer-Mail-by-Elevator-Banks kid who returned his game-box in the wagon after hiding it behind him, then taking a bow, saying "Thank you, thank you."

    Wasn't there one where the Giant Doorknob said goodbye (or something like that - I remember the crew were all standing around it very solemnly, but guest Daniel Stern was laughing out loud... and another scene where they brought out a little girl to recreate a pose from a picture with the doorknob. Could I possibly be thinking of something else?

    I don't think they re-ran the episodes with the doorknob. I watched most of the re-runs from about 1985 to 1989. I *knew* about the doorknob, however, because it appeared in the issue of the Avengers comic where they appeared on Late Night.

      Hi Don, did you see that Zschim's archive was removed? He was posting full Late Night episodes. I was able to save it in time, but I feel bad for those who won't get to see it. Do you feel you will be safe by not posting full episodes? I would be happy to act as a backup/mirror. Curious to know how many gigabytes (terabytes?) you have by now...

    • @dongiller
      @dongiller  6 лет назад +2

      Jon Allen First, none of his Late Nights were full; towards the beginning of each show he would inexplicably pause to save a second here, a second there. Made little sense. And he rarely included music acts. I doubt he had lost his account from any LN clips; he hadn’t uploaded anything in over a year. He was also a huge Queen fan, so it’s possible that was his trouble. We’ll never know for sure unless he resurfaces and explains what happened.
      As for me, thanks but I’ll hold on to my files. And if my channel goes down, there are plenty of copycats who have grabbed my videos for their own channels, and nearly all of my videos can be found there.
      In the meantime, I’ll continue doing whatever it is I’m doing, and we’ll see what happens.

    • @jonallen5078
      @jonallen5078 6 лет назад +1

      Oh right I forgot about the time saving. Very odd indeed but I was still grateful for the content. I'm sure there are many eager to see them uploaded properly. Some artist names cause automatic removal, I noticed this with Daniel Poitras' clips. Other times it will mute the offending segment. If you were to get into uploading full episodes it might be wise to do it through a friend's account so to speak. Thanks again for your hard work.
