They’re storm surge is at -20ft
The wind essentially blows the water out. Wind stops, it all comes back.

I believe the water was pushed out of the bay by off shore winds...winds from the western part of the hurricane going straight out to the Gulf. Please correct me of I am wrong Denis Phillips.

only reason the storm shifted south last minute. very similar moves have saved Houston and NOLA in recent years. the direct hit to tampa would've leveled the city

That's crazy - does it just come back when it rains? I don't know how any of this works but that's trippy.
the wind is pushing the water out of the bay since the wind is going from inland outward, and once the wind changes direction (tonight/tomorrow) it will push the water back the other way, except this time the water will WANT to go the same way as the wind. Because of that youll see a masive wall of water push back inward, super dangerous to be out there at that point.

The winds offshore were blowing the water out. Gravity made the water in the bay fill the void by seeking its lowest point. Meanwhile, there was a 25 foot wave hitting the shoreline south of the eye.

@@secretTarg the east northeast wind from Ian blew the water out into the gulf. Happened with Irma five years ago. And no, it doesn't just come rushing back. Some of you watch too many disaster movies.

It was drained, not pulled out. The state officials said the were going to drain several places so when the water started coming in hopefully it would help with flooding.
