My guess on why the relationship ended so abruptly is that Smythe's failure to find a publisher for Shkreli's biography and the fact that her letter of support failed to secure his early release led Shkreli to conclude that she was no longer of any use to him. Narcissists do tend to use people and drop them when they can't get any more from that person, I have an ex who has done this exact thing to multiple partners, though not from prison thankfully.

    • @MuricaTurkey

Considering what she's said about it, her behavior, and a recent article about her experience, I'd say she's also a narcissist. She was pretty aware that they were using each other, and it was part of the draw for her.
It seems she's fine with the break up (she says), I guess because she's getting all kinds of attention (still), they're "good friends" (so she still has some kind of relationship with him to exploit), and she's still working on "a book".
She's sometimes described herself as an "interloper" in her self written mini bios online for various websites she writes for. A cynical, salty, yet also whiny attempt at a quip. She gets to be a "rebel" who is special and above it all while still being some kind of "victim".
She seems to be contrary just to be contrary. Her husband tried to save their marriage, and told her the guy was using her, that she didn't deserve that. She accused her husband of just being randomly controlling and she is happy to have been "manipulated" by Martin, so she could be "free" of her "awful" (and she insinuates "boring") husband and job.
I honestly couldn't read the whole article she wrote about it because it was just insufferable.
      They deserved each other, honestly.

I think it’s very interesting how people lie about stuff like this, and for so long, it has the same vibes as celebs who lie about their age. it’s stupid and makes absolutely no difference to my life but it’s fascinating and I need to know why they did it.

While the mention of a prenuptial agreement was humorous in the context of this video and specifically because it was proposed by a likely Narcissist, I would highly recommend a prenuptial agreement, for any man or woman with substantial finances, entering into a marriage contract.
Do not allow emotion to make a risky decision, if and when one realises that a partner is not compatible.
Often one does not experience the shadow side of another, until after signing a marriage contract.
If the one that is asked to sign the contract is irrational and gets very emotional, feel lucky that you are witnessing behavior that is likely to manifest regularly in the future.
The appropriate responce would be, that while I believe we are soul mates, I understand that often, soon after marriage people realise they are not compatible and decide to part ways. I will sign.
This is not one sided anymore.
Woman are increasingly becoming financially abundant and I do not want to read about males or females being manipulated and experiencing a large material loss.
Be wise, even when your loins and emotions are on fire!

@@ruberthablackman3949 that is absolutely true. shkreli is most definitely a parasitic creature if there ever was one. meanwhile smyth couldn't have been in a good place in her life (at least psychologically) to think that leaving everything for him would somehow be better than whatever life she had previously, which she even described as being "the perfect little brooklyn life". i feel like she's embarrassed and regretful now so i shouldn't be so quick to judge and throw away any ounce of sympathy for her.

This is interesting, thanks Dr. Grande. It would make sense to me that Shkreli is narcissistic and Smythe is codependent. Nothing else makes sense in this situation with such a weasel of a man with such a punchable face. I can imagine he used all the narcissistic tools to reel her in e.g. love bombing, future faking (e.g. discussing names of children). I think perhaps this isn't the first time he's broken up with her ("ghosting" or blowing hot and cold) and that could be why she hasn't accepted this break up as final. I fully believe he's manipulated her. I hope she has a strong support system in place to help her raise her self esteem. The guy will try to reappear and hoover her; I have little doubt of that.

However, she was born in Boston of a good family,, and although spent some time in Spain and evidently can speak Spanish, is an American and English is her first language. What’s weird is that Alec somehow is either taken in by the ruse or is complicit in it. Her family must know as well. Her parents retired to Majorca as her father was a professor of Spanish literature....I find the whole debacle fascinating. I would love to hear your thoughts on this very strange situation.

It seems pretty weird for someone who is in the middle of a scandal to do something like that. Overall he seemed like a really extreme and overly self assured personality -- which made him appear like ar narcissist. I remember him having few redeeming features, besides appearing pretty intelligent. He could rationalize pretty much anything he had done and also rationalized away any and all forms of empathy and emotion.
The only time he appeared somewhat human, was when he talked about his brother having autism and that being an important factor in his life. He however also talked about medication for autism -- which as far as I know doesn't exist, which made me doubt a lot of what he said there.
