For all you expert sofa police, the initial car that has held the junction has done all that was required. He has held the junction (perhaps a little early) to allow the actual armed convoy to move down to the junction and take over.
The actual convoy would have a point vehicle that pushes forward and holds junctions and creates gaps etc. The lead vehicle then has a clear path to guide the prison van through. They are then followed by rear and in this case, a sweep vehicle. The initial car that held the junction is most likely NOT part of this convoy, but was just used to stop the vehicles at the first junction.
The police have obviously deemed the prisoner a high risk of escape, which is why they have used an armed convoy to escort them to and from court to prison.

Many years ago I had a friend who was at university in Manchester and although I never visited during the summer, for obvious reasons, when I did visit and I mean everytime I visited it always pissed down with rain. That stupid officer in the first car needs to go back on his escorting course! Fine, use the car to get attention. But he should have gotten out of the car and given clear signals to everyone involved and also maybe pulled some lines of traffic through to clear some of the blockage. I would have stopped the main carriageway and move the two cars in the side street out and let them on their way. He made a complete hash of the whole task!

Was it that big of a deal that some cars got confused? No, probably not. But they could have achieved what they wanted without any confusion at all, with basically no extra effort.

Before you ask, yes I have done something similar for convoys.
@Pure Brown Dung Yes, it would be common sense, but as can be witnessed in the streets daily most drivers lack that. Rule #1 when doing anything around traffic: keep your instructions as clear and simple as possible. So the opposite from what can be seen in the video. It also doesn't help that they "close" (tbh what they do doesn't really qualify as closing) the intersection for minutes before anything happens

Having police officers & retired police officers in my family, that officer makes me angry! My family officers work efficiently, but as respectfully as possible & would get out & direct people instead of lazily blasting their horn & yelling through the window to "move"! No wonder people have issues with police! And my family officers are the ones who have to deal with the consequences, like so many other decent officers!
Totally agree mate. I'm not an ex copper but as I was watching this I started yelling at my monitor for that lazy dick to get out and direct traffic - exactly as you said. People have no idea what is going on and are clearly confused, understandably. Good policing is about providing direction and assistance, not yelling and blasting horns. He had ample time to move those two cars waiting to turn right on their way, but no, leave them in the middle of the road when you have a high value convoy to squeeze past them. The guy in the car was a dick!

Saw something not dissimilar to this this the day before Maggie Thachers funeral. Driving back from luton airport when multiple police bikes (armed) with whistles brought traffic to a standstill at a roundabout, convoy of Range Rovers and exec cars blasted towards the M1. Confusing as hell, bikes on the roundabout then kindly scarpered leaving everyone to sort out the mess for themselves! Never did find out who was traveling.

For everyone commenting about the first car: I was always taught when driving, that if a police car is driving by with its lights on, you pull over to the side, and if you’re stopped at an intersection, you wait until the police clear it. There is no exception - even if the light turns green or if you’re turning right. (Or in the UK left)
Anything else is illegal. Everyone I know was taught this too. It might be a little different in the UK, but if it is then it needs to change.
