How To Replace Spider Gears In Ford 7.5 & 8.8 Open Differential - Ford Mustang

- This is a step by step instructional video on how to replace the spider gears inside a Ford 7.5 & 8.8 open differential. While I’m working on a ’98 Ford Mustang, this video applies to many Ford models & years since these rear ends have been in use for decades.
I show many tips & tricks to make this job quick, easy & painless. The actual labor part of this job takes about two hours. If you use RTV for the differential cover gasket then you’ll have to wait 12 to 24 hours for it to properly cure before adding fluid. There are gaskets available at most auto parts stores that work very well too that don’t have a wait time.

Simple and to the point, not full of a 10 minute speech on the backstory of how the vehicle got to this point, where I bought the parts, why my dog is barking, what I had for breakfast, how I like my new tool….bla bla. Thx
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
The best video I’ve seen on the spider gear swap. So easy, but not easy unless you’ve watched this video on how to rotate those spider gears in and keeping everything in place for center pin. Thank You!
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. I'm glad my video helped you out.
I want to say thank you for doing this video. Straight and to the point . My only regret was not finding this video sooner. I was struggling with those spider gears sadly for two hours. Watched your video had it done in two minutes. Thank you once again for such an informative video.
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out. Thanks for watching & commenting. I appreciate it.
My man!! Earlier today I installed new spider gears in my '91 Ranger 7.5 inch diff with absolute ease thanks to this video. If I hadn't watched this I would've definitely struggled (like I've seen a few fellas struggle here on the RUclipss). Thank you again.
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. I'm glad my video helped you out. Pay it forward!
Thanks for the video. A lot of people just say "put it back how it came out" and end their videos. You provide methods for everything and do it well 👍
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
This video is so amazingly informative... As a female I'm sure most would understand my worries and fear of replacing my spider gears, my father taught me basics growing up but not anything like this... I feel very confident going at this job after watching this video... THANK YOU IS NOT ENOUGH! I will post a updated comment once I complete this project... Thank you sooooo very much!!!!
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. Good luck!
Inquiring minds must know... Did you complete the job?!
Thank you so much for this video. I used this video to reposition my spider gears to my 2003 Ford F150 V6 I wouldn’t have been able to do it without you. Keep up the great work.
Thats great! I'm glad my video helped you out. Thanks for watching & commenting. I appreciate it.
the hardest part was putting the spider gears back in place . watching this made my job very easy THANKS
Thanks a lot. I'm glad my video helped you out.
Thank you for this video! Most people show the removal of a trak lok, I needed to see how the spider gears in an open diff come apart and go back together. You're awesome bro!
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. I'm glad my video helped you out.
Without any doubt one of the best videos ever on this repair and I love that it has CC enabled. Thanks so much.
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
Your video made my job a lot easier. I was able to assemble spider gears, but was scared to attempt before watching your tutorial. Great coaching skills and thanks a million for sharing your knowledge!
No problem. I'm glad my video helped you out.

Dude, thank you for this! I've been getting a nasty clunk in my 91 Ranger's rear end. It doesn't seem like ring/pinion, so I wasn't really sure what it was, but now I'm pretty sure it's the spider gears. You've simplified it enough that I'm going to dig in and give it a shot. Thanks for the concise, well made video. Super valuable.
No problem. Glad to be of service. Good luck.
very detailed, specific, and clear. thanks for posting this.
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
OMG!! I have replaced countless axle shafts, bearings, etc so many times and every single time I've been petrified of the spider gears falling out!
You made my day! No more fear for me! I cannot thank you enough for this video!
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. I'm glad my video helped you out.
Thank you so much! My upper and lower spider gears came out unintentionally while replacing the axle seals and I was already expecting the worst as I didn't get them back in. Your video made it very clear and I'm happy to see how easy it is to get them back in.
+KnightVideoEditing, thanks a lot. I appreciate it. I'm glad my video helped you out.
Congrats, this is the very best mustang rear diff rebuild video on youtube. A do it yourselfer like me and can watch this video while doing the actual rebuild and get the job done right. Score perfect 10
+Silicon Valley Engineer, thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
I second that!!!! I watched a video and the lady mechanic said don’t let the ring hear spin it will misalign the spiders and they are extremely hard to adjust. Well I did just that today actually one fell out into the pan and my anxiety hit defcon 5.
Thank God in heaven I found your video! You are a blessing bro!!
They aren't that hard to adjust once you know how the gears work/mesh together. I'm glad my video helped you out. Thanks a lot.
Fantastic video! Never seen a differential tear down and rebuild with this kind of detail. Thanks for sharing!
Glad to be of service.
You're on of the best youtubers at describing what to do. Thank you!!
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. :-)
+Pet Rock's Garage habe you ever had Hell pulling out the shaft? it acts like it wants to come out and gets stuck about 2 inches from locking position. i feel really dumb.
I’m not really sure. They just slid out for me without a problem. I responded to your other post with a suggestion on how to get it out. Good luck...
You saved my car today.
Thanks kindly.
My spider gear fell in to a nest and I watched this clip saved my day.
No problem. I'm glad my video helped you out.
Excellent video! Very professional and helpful. Thank you Sir!
+Thomas Gagliardi, no problem. Thanks for watching and commenting. i appreciate it.
Nice video! Glad I replaced the studs on one axle, otherwise I would have them mixed up lol
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. Yeah, it's important to put the axles back in the same side they came out of. On some diffs its pretty obvious, but on these its not so much.
Thank you times 100! Your video re: spider gears saved me. Cheers.
Thats great! I"m glad my videos helped you out.
Beneficial video. Appreciate you taking the time to film it. I have similar repairs to make on both a Dana 44 and a Ford 8.8 from a 2000 Explorer. This was good for a preview of what to expect on the Ford. Thanks again, Clay
+Texasknowhow, thanks a lot. I appreciate it and good luck.
Dude i dont comment much on videos but by god you are a life saver like omg thank you !!!
Gekkou Raion, thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
Me and my 1996 cobra thank you sir although I have a question
Gekkou Raion, whats your question?
ok i know my rear end is going out only one wheel turns but, now the side that doesn't turn the brakes are grinding against the rotor! so my question is will this be fixed once i fix the rear end or is this something else causing this!? they have brand new brakes in the back
Gekkou Raion, the brakes shouldn’t be touching the rotor with enough force to prevent the rotor from spinning if the brake pedal and emergency/parking brake is not set. Something is going on there that is likely independent of the differential issue. I’d take the caliper & rotor off and see if both wheels rotate when the rear is off the ground. Good luck...
You helped me your real good at this as the comments reflects
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
This is an awesome video!! Thank you so much! I am no longer afraid of my spider gears! Real spiders are a different story!👍
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. I also agree about spiders, especially if one crawls on you.
Extremely helpful ... Thanks a ton! I wasn't planning on touching the spider gears in my 2007 V6 Mustang when I upgraded to the GT500 rear brakes but I found a leaky axle seal and the spider gears fell out when I went to reinstall the big pin in the differential. After 30 minutes of "I almost got the &%a0a$ spider gears lined up that time", I took a break and found your clear and explicit instructions. Well done! Thanks to you I was back on track in less than 3 minutes.
Everyone has days like that. Glad to hear you knew to walk away and regroup before you really screwed something up (e.g. get a big hammer). I'm glad my video helped you out and that you got the job done. Thanks for watching & commenting. I appreciate it.
That was an excellent video. Short and thorough. Best I've seen this far. Nice job!
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
Thanks for very instructional and informative videos. I've gotta do the rear seals on my Mustangs and had no clue how.
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. Good luck!
On my lord.. I have drove myself crazy trying to figure out how to get some of them gears back in, the ones that the pin goes through.. It all of a sudden looks so easy. Thanks for the awesome video
Thanks a lot. I'm glad my video helped you out.
Your a excellent teacher. I was just about to replace the whole rear end until I seen your video. Thank you very much
Thanks a lot. I'm glad my video helped you out and saved you some $$$ in the process.
It looks like others have already said the same thing, but THANK YOU very much! I expect I'll have to be doing this job very soon on my Mustang and you have made it very clear and understandable how to get it done. Good video. Good narration. Keep doing what you do!
Johnny Verbeeck, thanks a lot. I appreciate it. I'm glad to know that my videos are helping people. That is my goal. Thanks again...
Turns out I did end up doing the job and it was much easier to do after having watched your video. I would have been unprepared without it. Thanks again
+Johnny Verbeeck, thats greats! Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it.
Wow ! Love the way you explained that.
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
Damn, I wish more mechanics were like you! Great job and video...sub'd!

Mine fell out doin hub bearing thanks bro direct to the point no nonsense bullish
A thousand thank you's for the great video and explaining it so well!
Glad to be of service.
im glad this worked for you, my pin hits the ring gear both ways.
Sorry to hear that. Sounds like you have aftermarket gears installed. Only non-destructive solution I can think of is to unbolt the ring gear. Torque the ring gear bolts down to 60 ft/lbs when reinstalling. Good luck.
@@petrocksgarage I thought the same, 40 years old after all. Even service data says it should clear. I left it (my personal vehicle) since i have an 8.8 ill install once the 7.5 grenades. Thanks
Well, at least you have a backup. Although if your motor is a V6, the 8.8 may be too big and may actually hurt performance depending on the gears that are in it. Good luck.
Nicely presented. Thanks for the in depth info!
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
Damn dude you're the best I've seen and I've looked at
I know you inspired me to do it

@@petrocksgarage Is the roll-in of the spider gears as easy as it looked in your video? It seems very straightforward rolling in the 1st gear, rotating the carriage, and rolling in the opposite gear, and lining it up with the 2nd. That easy?
@@jockodog2009, yeah pretty much.
Thank you very much for this video. 🙏
No problem. Glad to be of service.

very helpful, saved me from having a heart attack. i did this on a 2010 crown victoria p71 . thank you.
Thanks a lot. I'm glad my video helped you out and saved you an ambulance ride. :-)
You mentioned this is Ford but it’s the exact same thing as my GM 7.5, I think I can do this 💪🏽, very specific and detailed video
Yeah, the internals of most open differentials like this are, for the most part, the same. So if you know how to do one, you know how to do others. Good luck.
good vid leared something i never knew before
+cermem, thanks lot. Glad to be of service.
Damn good instructions

Excellent video! Took the mystery out of it!
Glad to be of service.
Great video thank you, this made a few things little clearer and easier to see specially with the inside of the diff.
No problem. I'm glad my video helped you out.

Good work 👏
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
Thanks so much for helping solve the mystery of how to remove the pinion shaft lock bolt! Mine was fairly stripped by the previous knucklehead so it had to be replaced. Thought I would have to remove the bearing carrier bolts. Yahoo!

FANTASTIC INFORMATIVE Going to attack this job rear driver side bearing starting to make noise thanx
Thanks a lot & good luck.
The o-ring is used for 2 things, when at the factory there less chance of the clip falling out during fast assemble, and if there is tension on the clip there will be less where on it.
+Dean Gamelin, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.
Great video. You didn't clarify in the video, so someone may do unnecessary work, but you don't need to remove the spider gears if all you are doing is removing the axle shafts. I always just leave them in place.
True, if you have a center pin with a cut out in the middle like the aftermarket one I installed in this video you can just rotate the center pin to give clearance for the axle shafts to be pushed in etc. However, if your center pin does not have the cut out, like the stock one I replaced on this car, you have to remove the center pin. At which point it is super easy for the spider gears to fall out and potentially get damaged if they fall out of the diff & bounce around on your garage floor. So it's often easier/safer to remove them in this case. But go with whichever method works for you.
Very good video!
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
Thanks for you advice I was able to spend the top spider gear back into place and put the differential back together. Although its was still some what of a challenge given my short arms and think build. Thanks once again!! Now I need to replace the U-joints so hopefully it goes pretty smooth.
Thats great! I'm glad you got it figured out. Good luck on the U-joints.
Now, that's how you do a how 2 video!
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.

No problem. Thanks for watching & commenting. I appreciate it.
I never comment on videos but after watching I have to say one of the best how to videos I have ever seen on youtube. My wife has a 2001 Mustang is it pretty much the same as the 98? She has a leak on the right rear seal and I noticed lot of play In the axle so it is probably due for some new gears also. Thank you again for the video I will share and watch all of your videos.
+Stephen StephenB, Yes, your wife's '01 is pretty much the same as my wife's '98 (in terms of the differential). I wouldn't condemn the gears before pulling the diff cover and having a look inside. The play could be due to a lot of things, including but not limited to, bad driveshaft u-joints. Good luck...
Thank you so much for making this video 👍😊😊
No problem. I'm glad my video helped you out.
Thank you for a great video. It explained everything well. I intended on repairing a seal and axle bearing, but now I'm wondering if I should go ahead and put new spider gears in while I have it apart. It is a 96 Ranger with a bunch of miles. It did appear doable from your video, though I know "looks are deceiving."
If the spider gears are loose or worn then definitely replace them. They aren't a normal maintenance item. So, in my opinion, if they aint broke, don't fix 'em. Check out my video on replacing the axle seals & bearings on a ford diff (ruclips.net/video/VXEqzMVRRso/видео.html). Thanks for watching & commenting. I appreciate it.

The cut out in the pin is for getting the c clips out with out removing the pin

+Juan G, no problem. I’m glad they helped you out.
great video. my only question, are 7.5 spider gears and 8.8 the same size aside from spline?
I don't think so. I think the 8.8 spider gears are slightly bigger. They are different part numbers. But the install procedure is identical.
Well done Sir..
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
hey man thank you so much for the awesome videos. I'm changing the axle bearings on my 8.8 98 Cobra this week, and the instructions are very adamant about not damaging the spider gears when rotating the differential to expose the axle c-clips. in your video you say they just slide out when rotating it - this concerns me lol. what's the best way to rotate everything with the pin out to expose the c-clips without damaging anything? thank you so much in advance
I think the damage they may be referring to is if the spider gears fall out and bang around on the floor. If the gears remain in the carrier then there should be no damage to them. When you get it apart it might make more sense.
After rotating the carrier a little, with the pin out, you will see that the spider gears didn't rotate with the carrier. When this happens, just manually & slowly rotate one of the tires to rotate the spider gears back into position. Make sure to rotate the tire while you are watching the gears so you don't rotate it the wrong direction. If you are super worried about the spider gears coming out you could run some zip-ties through the holes in the carrier that the pin goes through & the center of the spider gears to hold the spider gears in place. Basically putting zip ties where the pin was going. Hope that helps. Good luck.
Thanks for videos
Glad to be of service.
very well explained boss man. idk shit about cars or know anything about "how to's" but ur vid actualy gave me the confidence 2 go out n try it my self 2morrow. my diffirential locked up on me lastnight i had to tow my car home so hopefuly takeing all that out cleaning it realy good and filling it bk up will fix it. i do have ALOT of back lash when puting my foot on & off the gas... SO MYB frm what iv learend so far i might need them lil circle lashes thigs replaced n get new 1s from what iv seen doing the oil change on it wont fix the back lash nor the winning on it but ill keep my fingers crossed. thank u if u have any pointers on ANYTHING I SHOULD KNOW B4 TEYING THIS OUT id appreciate it if u would let me know. thanks again 1 of the best vids iv watched so far hands down. thanks again.
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. If your differential locked up then something metal broke inside there and probably got jammed in one of the gear teeth. A fluid change will not solve the problem. It is impossible to say what the problem or solution is without taking the diff cover off and having a look inside. Since you said you don't know much about cars, if there is a broken bearing or gear inside (other than the spider gears) I would not attempt this yourself. Installing new gears or bearings requires special tools & some skill. I would take it to a shop to have them fix it once you have looked inside to see what is wrong. Good luck.
Awesome. ... keep sharing knowledge
Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
