    Simple and to the point, not full of a 10 minute speech on the backstory of how the vehicle got to this point, where I bought the parts, why my dog is barking, what I had for breakfast, how I like my new tool….bla bla. Thx

    The best video I’ve seen on the spider gear swap. So easy, but not easy unless you’ve watched this video on how to rotate those spider gears in and keeping everything in place for center pin. Thank You!

    Dude, thank you for this! I've been getting a nasty clunk in my 91 Ranger's rear end. It doesn't seem like ring/pinion, so I wasn't really sure what it was, but now I'm pretty sure it's the spider gears. You've simplified it enough that I'm going to dig in and give it a shot. Thanks for the concise, well made video. Super valuable.

      ok i know my rear end is going out only one wheel turns but, now the side that doesn't turn the brakes are grinding against the rotor! so my question is will this be fixed once i fix the rear end or is this something else causing this!? they have brand new brakes in the back

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  9 лет назад

      Gekkou Raion, the brakes shouldn’t be touching the rotor with enough force to prevent the rotor from spinning if the brake pedal and emergency/parking brake is not set. Something is going on there that is likely independent of the differential issue. I’d take the caliper & rotor off and see if both wheels rotate when the rear is off the ground. Good luck...

    Extremely helpful ... Thanks a ton! I wasn't planning on touching the spider gears in my 2007 V6 Mustang when I upgraded to the GT500 rear brakes but I found a leaky axle seal and the spider gears fell out when I went to reinstall the big pin in the differential. After 30 minutes of "I almost got the &%a0a$ spider gears lined up that time", I took a break and found your clear and explicit instructions. Well done! I never comment on videos but after watching I have to say one of the best how to videos I have ever seen on youtube. My wife has a 2001 Mustang is it pretty much the same as the 98? She has a leak on the right rear seal and I noticed lot of play In the axle so it is probably due for some new gears also. Thank you again for the video I will share and watch all of your videos.

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  9 лет назад

      +Stephen StephenB, Yes, your wife's '01 is pretty much the same as my wife's '98 (in terms of the differential). I wouldn't condemn the gears before pulling the diff cover and having a look inside. The play could be due to a lot of things, including but not limited to, bad driveshaft u-joints. Good luck...

  • @SurvivalInFlames
    @SurvivalInFlames 7 лет назад

    Great video. You didn't clarify in the video, so someone may do unnecessary work, but you don't need to remove the spider gears if all you are doing is removing the axle shafts. I always just leave them in place.

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  7 лет назад

      True, if you have a center pin with a cut out in the middle like the aftermarket one I installed in this video you can just rotate the center pin to give clearance for the axle shafts to be pushed in etc. However, if your center pin does not have the cut out, like the stock one I replaced on this car, you have to remove the center pin. At which point it is super easy for the spider gears to fall out and potentially get damaged if they fall out of the diff & bounce around on your garage floor. So it's often easier/safer to remove them in this case. But go with whichever method works for you.

    Thank you for a great video. It explained everything well. I intended on repairing a seal and axle bearing, but now I'm wondering if I should go ahead and put new spider gears in while I have it apart. It is a 96 Ranger with a bunch of miles. It did appear doable from your video, though I know "looks are deceiving."

      If the spider gears are loose or worn then definitely replace them. They aren't a normal maintenance item. So, in my opinion, if they aint broke, don't fix 'em. Check out my video on replacing the axle seals & bearings on a ford diff (ruclips.net/video/VXEqzMVRRso/видео.html). Thanks for watching & commenting. I appreciate it.

    The o-ring is used for 2 things, when at the factory there less chance of the clip falling out during fast assemble, and if there is tension on the clip there will be less where on it.

    hey man thank you so much for the awesome videos. I'm changing the axle bearings on my 8.8 98 Cobra this week, and the instructions are very adamant about not damaging the spider gears when rotating the differential to expose the axle c-clips. in your video you say they just slide out when rotating it - this concerns me lol. what's the best way to rotate everything with the pin out to expose the c-clips without damaging anything? thank you so much in advance

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  2 года назад

      I think the damage they may be referring to is if the spider gears fall out and bang around on the floor. If the gears remain in the carrier then there should be no damage to them. When you get it apart it might make more sense.
      After rotating the carrier a little, with the pin out, you will see that the spider gears didn't rotate with the carrier. When this happens, just manually & slowly rotate one of the tires to rotate the spider gears back into position. Make sure to rotate the tire while you are watching the gears so you don't rotate it the wrong direction. If you are super worried about the spider gears coming out you could run some zip-ties through the holes in the carrier that the pin goes through & the center of the spider gears to hold the spider gears in place. Basically putting zip ties where the pin was going. Hope that helps. Good luck.

    great video thank you. like some commenters i was just doing wheel bearings and seals and my spider gears fell down. tried and tried to get them in. can only get the spider gears back in without the washer, but cant seem to "slip" the washers behind them. looks like i might pull the whole carrier out and assemble on the bench, idk. working on a 2011 f150 with the 9.75 open diff if that makes a difference. thanks for the info.

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  3 года назад

      The washer has a lip that centers it on the spider gear, so you have to install the spider gear & washer together otherwise you'll never get the washer in place. Unless you don't have room to work under your truck, which I think you would have way more then I did under this Mustang, pulling the carrier is a little overkill and could open up a can of worms you don't want to mess with. Its unclear from your comment on if you tried the technique I demonstrate in this video to get the gears back together. If you haven't, I would give it a shot. The gears & washers fit in there before so they should fit back in again (assuming the gear & washer isn't damaged from falling out). Good luck.

    In some carriers, doesn't the ring interfere with removing the center pin? I have seen some videos that show that some filing of the ring teeth is required in order to slide out the center pin.

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  2 года назад +1

      I have not experienced that, but I suspect those are aftermarket gears and/or carriers. Either way, grinding the gears is not the proper solution, IMO. The pin got in there somehow, and it was likely without the ring gear installed. So the solution isn't to grind the gears but to instead remove the carrier and unbolt the ring gear to get it out of the way. Then bolt it back up when done. It's really not that hard to do, and a lot easier than grinding. But to each their own.

      How would I remove the carrier if I can't get the center pin past the ring gear, and therefore also can't get the c-clips off the axle to pull them ?

    • @jockodog2009
      @jockodog2009 Год назад

      I was able to slide the center pin out of the carrier part way. It is enough to make room within the carrier to push the axles in and remove the c-clips and extract both axles. The center pin lock bolt cannot be removed completely because there is no cutout to make room on the right side bearing cap. The bolt gets hung up, needing another 1/4 inch or so to extract completely. So that's doable after the cap is removed. I still must then decide how to deal with the ring gear/center pin interference issue in order to replace the spider gears.

I have purchased 3:73 gears but am wondering if I need new bearings since the gears only have about 10K miles on them since replacement. Unless the new gear set has a different diameter where they interface with the bearings, you should be able to reuse them. Just take extra care as to not damage the bearings as you remove them from the old gear set & install them onto the new one. Good luck.

    hey bro, nice. what would cause excessive in out play on the axle shaft. very good videos very in depth and helpful for people who dont have wads of cash to keep their rides going or who just wanna learn. i dont usually subscribe but your videos are good and i have an above average knowledge of cars thanks

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  7 лет назад +1

      There should be some in/out play with the axle shafts. I'm not sure on the exact spec, but the ABS tone ring should not be able to touch the ABS sensor (if yours has one) nor should the axle seal be able to touch the ABS tone ring or the part of the axle that the wheel studs go into. The center pin in the diff housing prevents the axle from going in too far and the C-Clip & little rubber o-ring on the end of the axle shaft that I show in the video prevent the axle shafts from going out too far. Make sense?

    10:25 - Right here is where I am having an issue with my reinstallation. The gear sleeve on the back doesn't seem to want to fit in the housing with the gear. Every time it slides the gear in the housing pushes the sleeve off the top. I tried applying pressure as I moved it, but just doesn't want to fit. Hoping you might have an idea or 'trick' to the particular situation.
    I've tried pulling the clipped axles out as tightly as I could to increase the spacing, but still giving issues. Any advice you might be able to give is appreciated.

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  9 лет назад

      +Cloudski, do you mean the little disk/washer that clips onto the gear and goes in-between the bear and the housing as shown around 10:10)? Those should clip onto the gear. Make sure its not damaged or warped or anything like that. Make sure to apply a little bit of oil to both sides of the washer as I show in the video so that it slides into place in the housing easier. Its hard to diagnose this from my keyboard. I would have to have the diff in front of me to tell what is going on. The washer should clip onto the gear so that it doesn't slide off while positioning the gear. Good luck...

    • @apljack
      @apljack 9 лет назад

      Pet Rock's Garage No, I meant the ones at the point shown at 10:25
      The smaller spider gears are the ones with the problem. The metal 'washers' on the back of them won't turn into the housing. The gears fit just fine themselves, just the sleeves on the backs of them don't fit in.
      Ah well ,I will just have to try again after I've had sleep and such, maybe I was missing something in the fatigue of the day working.

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  9 лет назад

      +Cloudski, yeah we are talking about the same thing. The small gears have little cupped washers that clip onto them. Make sure that the larger gears are seated all the way into the housing and that the old large flat washers aren't stuck in the housing. You could have two large flat washers on one of the large gears that is pushing the large gear out too far causing clearance issues. Good luck...

    • @apljack
      @apljack 9 лет назад

      Pet Rock's Garage I figured that might be the cause of them not fitting in all the way. I'll likely pull out the larger ones to double check they are seated properly when i have more time and not frustrated already. XD

    So my ranger the drop pin is designed to not come out, it instead has a groove in it that you are supposed to push the axle up against to remove the clips, and I have found nothing on this anywhere on how to do that.

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage  4 года назад

      I'm not aware of a ford 8.8/7.5 diff with a pin that isn't supposed to come out. If your pin isn't coming out its probably because it is stuck/seized, not because its not supposed to come out.
      Some pins do have a groove in it, like the one I install in this video. Maybe some people might use it so they don't have to remove the pin and accidentally drop the spider gears out. But to be able to spin the pin it might just slide out anyways, so you're not really saving any time/effort.
