What's the purpose of having patient stick out tongue when taking mandibular impression?

Great question Roger. The purpose is twofold. (1) Having the tongue above the tray, means that if the patient has to swallow then there is less chance the tongue will dislodge or move the tray during this swallowing process. (2) This movement will push the impression material out of the way in this area. This means that during the pouring up process, your technician will have an easier time pouring up a good clean model to work with. Hope that helps :-)

I have done this a couple of times in my youth but.....this would be impossible for me now because of gagging. Its a real problem

SUPINE = lying on front; I imagine that'd be very difficult for any dental procedure!

Hi J Wood. Thanks for engaging on this video and asking for clarification. The "supine" position is the body position in which a person is lying flat on their back, face up. I think you are thinking of "prone" position, which is the body position in which a person is lying flat on their front, face down. In my humble opinion dentistry is best performed in the supine position 🙂
