- Taking perfect impressions in dentistry is extremely important. If the impression isn't accurate, then the model will be inaccurate and then everything that comes after that will also be inaccurate.
In this video I show you how to take the perfect algiante impression, and then how to turn these into perfect stone models.
We talk about using an adhesive spray, periphery wax, how to limit gagging, how to disinfect the models, how to pour them up into perfect models, how to trum them models, how to reduce air bubbles.

Hey legends, thanks for watching!
Feel free to comment if you have any questions - I always endevaour to write back on the same day.
If you get a chance, it would mean a lot to me if you could like the video and subscribe to the channel. It helps with the RUclips algorithm and it will mean I can get more videos out to more people!
Have a great day :-)
Very good demo
Thank you 🙌
Oo
Dental prosthetic student here. I loved how you included an impression with and without the adhesive. Tips like that are the ones that will always stick around and, I'd imagine, save some headaches. Awesome vid!
Thank you - glad you liked it!
That tip about putting tray in upper, push up in back first so material doesn’t go down throat**** i wish my dentist knew this!!
Yeah it's a good one! Also good to know not to overload the tray so there aren't huge amounts of overflow!
I used to work in a dental lab, and I was in charge of pouring and trimming the impressions. Our stone definitely set up a lot quicker than this, so I had to be quick. There are tons of tips and tricks to keep the air bubbles out. Setting up impressions for an implant scared me at first, as you only have one chance to get it perfect, but I became a pro at it. loved that job.
I'm sure you would be very good at all of this!
They don’t teach any of these little details that are actually really important to have a accurate models in dental school.Thank you for sharing Doctor I will use them tommorrow in the lab 🙏❤️
You're welcome 🙌
This is the second video of yours that I'm watching and I'm sold! I wish all our instructors at school would teach the tips and tricks like you do - we barely got any training or practice with impressions due to COVID. Subscribed and looking forward to your future videos!
Awesome I'm glad to hear it helps 🙌🙌
I'm going to have my impressions taken in 10 weeks. Thank you very much for an awesome informative video of the whole process!
You're welcome!
Amazing stuff! Love the videos. Looking forward to more content!
Cheers Ben, I'll try and keep them coming!
Excellent explanation Dr Paul.kudos for hard work you put in this!!
Thank you for the comment!
Absolutely lifesaver video ! Learnt a lot here! Thank you !
Good to hear, I hope it helps!
That’s really helpful dr Paul . Thankyou for your efforts
Thanks for the comment John I'm glad you liked it 🙌
Thanks Dr. Paul ,it was really helpful .There's soo much to learn from you ✨️ ❤️
Great to hear, thanks for letting me know!
Lovely video Doc, it was a nice refresher
Good to hear I'm glad you liked it 🙌
This dentist is amazing! Just what patients actually need
You're too kind!
The way you explain and do it is really nice, I wish all dentist and assistant are watching this too so they will be more knowledgeable of what their doing because some of them is terrible not knowing the patient is hurting.
Thank you 🙌
This is one of my favorite dental videos on impressions. You are so detailed from start to finish. This has helped me refresh my dental skill. Thank you!
Thanks for the comment! Glad I could help 🙌
Amazing video, every steps was explained in details and the demonstration was great. Thank you!
Thanks for letting me know!
Great instructional video . Thanks . Couple of points . Bubbles on stone are actually saliva droplets . So give a quick blast of air over the teeth before u place alginate with your finger. 2. When pouring stone into the alginate start at last tooth and add from there continuously excess water will flow forward. 3. Place paper towel over vibratory that is wet. When inverting the poured alginate place on a ceramic tile or inverted metal tray . Do not place on dry paper towel it will absorb water out of the stone . After you have inverted poured alginate , now cover with the wet paper towel you had on vibrator so it sets in moist environment. Srperate the model from the alginate impression as soon as it sets to avoid dried alginates absorbing back from stone .
Love the extra tips!
No they are not saliva droplets because if you’ve taken impressions with dry teeth you can still get bubbles. So it is best to smear material into the teeth.
@@jorgemontes6800 ever since i started to give a slight blast of air . Much less bubbles in the stone . But yes smear the alginate on the occlusals w a finger before placing the tray in
Jorge I was actually going to do an experiment of drying the tooth vs smearing, and see if there are still bubbles. For my own knowledge

the salt idea is brilliant, slat does dissipate mucous, but I feel it's the taste, too. Such a great tip!
Thank you!
This was very good info! Thank you!

Thank you for this, I’m in dental hygiene school and we have to take impressions for a grade. This video was very helpful!

Hello dr. , really like your video so precise and informative , best one I have seen , I been on dentistry for 35 years , I will use this as a guide on my new dental assistants for instructions how to !!! Than k you again !!!

Thanx for making it easier 🤩

I am a retired Dental Assistant, just retired in 21! These things you are showing is what needs to be taught in the schools for sure. People would come from other offices or fresh out of school and say they have never been shown any of these tips. I would do these things, and be amazed they never even heard of them. Like the salt, and putting water on the the alginate, putting some on the teeth.. and even putting a thick base for the models. And making the base then place the tray to that base that is how I would do it. To me all of these things were 101 techniques all Students should have been taught. Or if someone has been in dental offices for a few years, should understand and have done. But then again I had several pts and a son who used to have such bad gag reflex that I did all the techniques I could think of to help them not gag. So maybe that is why I knew different ways to help them. Also on top I would take a bit of the alginate off the back so it would not have much of any go to far in the throat. Some days I miss my job! Lol but I have done it since the 90’s so I had to quit. Burn out and loss of my son made my head all messed up. I couldn’t concentrate as well since I lost him. And well I tried to keep going for 6 yrs after.. but I just still wasn’t there.. I would drive to and from work and sometimes forget where I was or what I was doing or how I got there! Scary!
But I am getting better. I am also a certified Medical Assistant in addition to certified DA so I fall back to the MA and take care of elderly part time., private (not a company) I go to their house and clean and cook and bath them and keep them company, play games with them and lift their spirits.. so it helps me and I love it. It is good to have a plan B !
Thanks for the comment Renee! I bet you were an awesome dental assistant!
It's good to hear you're still involved in healthcare in some capacity 🙌
@@DrPaulsDentalWorld thank you! I loved the patients! I miss them very much. I always helps their hands when they got the shots as some were nervous and would thank me and even say no one else ever did that but it helped, they would even say if I was. Absent they wouldn’t come they will reschedule! Lol
Wow you sound like you were very appreciated!
I used to hate pouring models but now I love it the most. I got really good at it and I used to use a rubber mold as my base but I don't need it anymore. I thicken the stone to form my base and I'm able to form it how I want, freehand.
Experience is a great thing!
I love your video. You think about almost anything we need to know. I really appreciate it because I'm thinking of making my own dentures since I actually don't trust dentists on account of a bad experience from a dentist that messed up my mouth and couldn't eat for a few years. So I started to let my teeth fall out on it's own. I really appreciate this video.
You're welcome. I tried my best to cover everything that I thought was important! Good luck with it.
Thank you so much sir it is really an very useful video for students who are posted in department
Great to hear, I'm glad you liked it 🙌
May I comment as a patient? PLEASE, above all...LISTEN to your patient! I have severe emetophobia (fear of vomiting), which causes panic attacks if I even only start gagging. I've struggled with this my whole life. You can imagine how big of an impact it had on my oral health. I was talked into a top denture in my 20's, without warning of what I was going to experience. They knew of my phobia right off the bat. When they went to take my impression, of course, I had a panic attack. It was embarrassing, but I had no control over it. Then, the actual dentist came in, took the tray, forced it in my mouth, and held it there as I threw up twice in his hand. I should've left after that, I know, but all I wanted was a smile I wasn't embarrassed about. I heard them break every single tooth. I was shaking so hard you could hear my legs hitting the chair. I had tears spilling over into my hair because I couldn't wipe them away. They never once asked if I was okay or if I needed a break. They kept going (it was the dentist and his assistant only), talking casually over my face like I wasn't there. Of course, my denture came back uneven, the roof of it partially touching one side, hanging to my tongue on the other. I was devastated. That was around 15 years ago. It traumatized me. Always thought about "all-on-fours" so I could cut the roof out, but never could afford it. I should've left that day. I should've never let that man talk me into such an extreme procedure when I probably didn't need it yet. Sorry, I didn't mean to go on such a long rant lol got myself crying over here. But please, always make sure you listen to your patients. This phobia may seem silly to some, but it's very real. I hate it and wish I didn't have it.
Sounds like a terrible experience, sorry to hear!
That sounds like a nightmare WORSE then one I'm currently enduring 🥺 I 1000% agree w/ u as I'm undergoing near identical treatment myself 💔 Always hated the idea of dentures, in midst of snap ins due for the uncovering in Feb & literally all my issues, complaints, suffering & set backs have been ignored 😡
I'd give anything to go back, however, ALL my teeth had been rootcanaled which after 6yrs were failing major so the options were not there for me 😭😭😭😭
Heartbroken & devastated,,,, praying my permanent are done well & properly 🙏🙏🙏
Hope things are better for u ❤
Listening to what a patients wants sometimes, differs greatly from what a patient needs for better health. If the teeth were infected then taking them out was the best choice health wise, regardless of feelings.
That is so horrible! I’ve been watching a lot of videos like this and apparently that’s how they are taught, to hold it there while it cures no matter what, puke and all. They should have at the very least warned you of that when you told them about your gagging and asked you if you were okay!
@theword2011 they weren't infected. Not quite sure how you got that from my comment? I had bonding performed some time before that, which was not only a huge waste of money but a big regret. It constantly chipped, starting a week after it was done. Eventually, one of them cracked in a big way, and then everything just went downhill. I have learned over the last few years that I have issues with my vitamin D AND my bones, at 42, are thin and I have osteoporosis. Not sure what effects that may have had on my teeth, if any. That still doesn't take away from my experience.
Thank you for this. My models always turn out so watery and the whole things gets messed up😭 now I see the right consistency
I'm glad it helped!!
Thank you. Well presented 🏆

This is a great video and since I was a dental technician before becoming a dentist I poured thousands of models. The only comment is that I never let any of my assistants leave dried stone on The spatula or on the model trimmer. It looks too messy if your patients have to come into the lab for some reason.
Thanks for the feedback Jorge!

Thank you for this video 😢, i have only started to working in making stones from dental impression in French, i tried to understand as much as possible the process but there's limitation with language barrier, your video clarifies a lot of things!
How long do you think for someone with no dentistry background to master the art of making stone without bubbles?
I'm glad the video helped 🙌
If you follow all of the steps, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get it close to to perfect quite quickly. Maybe after 5 or so models
Grrrrreat💜💜💜
🙌🙌
Hey great video, if I’m making a wax mould from the impression do I need to trim down the excess and if so what should I use if I don’t have that machine you have?
Liked it all . Very nicely explained.
My only small suggestion would be to stick to the powder:water ratio as per the manufacturer.
Yellow(Ainsworth) dental stone is 100gm powder : 30 ml water .
My lab guy said adding more water may impact the strength of the cast and may
fracture while they make special trays etc .
Thanks for the tip Keith. I'd be surprised if the cast would break during making special trays (and if it did, would it really matter if it's just for special trays?), but still something to consider 👌
@@DrPaulsDentalWorld special trays ,etc .
👌👌
Is like the samething with my manager he told follow the rule on the box material when it said 100gm and 30ml water. He will get angry if I add water. Because when i do that the stone tend to dry so quickly which get me the rushing point
@@timothysol7858 may be consider the temperature of water .
Also if you add the 100G powder in increments the material sets quickly as it previous increment gets more nucleus for setting process.
Thank you, Dr. Paul, for showing and demonstrating the technique of taking good Dental impressions with ALIGNATE. The dentist usually asks to breathe through the nose which has not been possible with my mouth open. Any tips?

The best presentation ever.
Could you do crown prep and explain what type of materials you use?
Thank you.
Materials for the crown prep impression or the crown?
Thank you
@DrPaulsDentalWorld
Thank you for your reply.
Dental materials for the crown prep.
Polysiloxane or silicone?
What do you use for the temporary crown? What cement do you cement the temp with?
I've started to teach Dental Materials, and I'm explaining the different elastomeric mats avaliable.
The role of the DDS and the assistant.
It's hard for the students to visualize the procedure. I came across your clear, and succinct presentation, and thought you'd be a phenomenal help.
I shared your video of the alginate with them. They loved it.
Thank you very much.
Ah OK. Very broad topics and one where there isn't going to be a right or wrong answer. For me I use polyvinylsiloxane with a light body on the tooth and heavy body in the tray and then seat the tray.
For the temp crown I have a video on how to make them, which you may find useful. Currently using a rein temp cement which I like, but previously have used tempbond
ruclips.net/video/0Bm6_7wUBoc/видео.html how to make temp crown
Hello. Thanks for your sharing the process. Can you tell us which materials do you use for alginate and the stone, please?
The alginate and stone are both from Henry schein halas.
To be honest, you can use any alginate and any stone. The key with alginate is to make sure that you pour it into stone very quickly. With the stone, the accuracy probably won't make much difference because this is a primary impression
Thanks Alot. Very well explained.
I have 3 questions. Kindly help me.
1. Is it fine to everytime put a little alginate on teeth before seating the tray?
2. How to avoid model breakage while seperating it from tray? Does adhesive helps there?
3. How to proceed if model gets broken?
You're welcome!
1. Yes, do this to stop air bubbles
2. You have to get it off slowly and also make sure that the base is thick enough. This is mentioned in the video
3. Either take a new impression or super glue them back together
that is good
🙌🙌
thank you so much for this video. May I ask where can I get the Fix Adhesive?
We buy ours from Henry Schein, but if you type in "fix adhesive alginate" you will get lots of results
Sir , plz add with Impression compound for edentulous patients
Sorry - I don't treat any edentulous patients! Are there any other videos on RUclips?
I have zero dental experience, but I'm interested in trying to become a fangsmith, would you have any advice? Thank you for this video and your channel!
No idea sorry. Best bet would be to shadow/work for free for someone who does it. I don't make those devices so wouldn't be able to recommend anything more than that
Gday. Thanks for making the video. After getting shocking dentures that top & bottom did not mate, the lower plate had teeth that were way too high (I use to have a nice smile, now all you see is bottom teeth & you cant even see the top teeth which ruined my smile) and all the teeth were too far in and slanted inwards, totally unnatural feeling which also made my cheeks and lips appear sucked in. I hated it. I cant & wont wear them and refused to pay for them they were that bad.
This was all done thru the Adelaide Public Dental Clinic.
So I decided to make them myself as I have used resins, silicones, alginates, & plaster working in Special FX, plug & mold making.
I will certainly like & subscribe... but I was wondering if you could provide links to get the materials - preferably in Australia. Thanks m8. ✌
