  • The Japanese and Chinese gardens, which have been closed for redevelopment since May 2019, visitors can now explore the Japanese Garden, which reopened on Sunday (8 September 2024), together with the Chinese Garden.
The rejuvenated Japanese Garden in Jurong East, Singapore, now features a blend of lush floral and aquatic gardens. It highlights tropical flora while incorporating traditional elements of Japanese garden design. One of the new additions is the Water Lily Garden, which will showcase over 150 varieties of water lilies, both day- and night-blooming, sourced globally.
In 2021, US chipmaker Micron Technology contributed S$1 million towards the Gardens' sustainability initiatives. This donation helped fund the implementation of a smart water management system, aimed at cleaning and restoring water in the Water Lily Garden and the larger Japanese Garden.
Originally constructed in 1974 by JTC Corporation, the Japanese Garden spans 13.5 hectares (135,000 m²).

Sadly, the “reno/rejuvenation” spoiled the original Chinese & Japanese Gardens. The reno removed so much of the Chinese & Japanese characteristics/elements of the original gardens. My heart sank to see how the gardens are “destroyed” this way. Just ask anyone who frequented the gardens BEFORE this reno.
