I honestly never disliked this episode. I liked seeing Spongebob trying hard to prove he's actually smart only it to completely backfire and then he just loses it lmao. (Also that CGI rock looks shockingly good for like, 2000/2001 what the fuck-)
Funnily enough, I never really hated this episode. It was always one of my favorites growing up. I think the one thing that doesn't hold up well though is the joke about Spongebob putting his helmet on and telling Gary he's "supposed to look stupid". I know helmets can be necessary for a lot of impaired/disabled individuals so seeing that just feels so off in a cartoon like Spongebob. I, myself, am autistic, but I still find the joke funny in a way. Not a good joke to make, but hey, nothing you can do about it now but laugh if you can!
My thoughts on this episode are interesting. Usually the mean spirited nature seen in some episodes puts a bad taste in my mouth, but this one doesn't bother me. After thinking about it, I believe this episode works for me because SpongeBob doesn't actually feel insulted, he is more so just annoyed and frustrated for not being taken seriously. If he were actually made to believe he was stupid and he started loathing himself for it then the episode would've been a LOT worse. As it stands I am in agreement that this episode is quite solid, though definitely one of the less notable of the golden era.
That actually makes the episode still a downer in my eyes-as someone who constantly feels chided and not taken seriously, seeing SpongeBob go through those same frustrations and not be given catharsis just made the episode extremely hard to watch.
A more improvement version of Grandma's kisses is the bully but still grandma kisses is a good episode I mean compared little yellow book with Grandma's kisses they both have flaws but grandma's kisses does a better job than it
Always thought this episode was funny and is filled to the brim with jokes that ingrained in my skull. I kinda get why some people don't like it but it always surprised me when I got older online and found how many people disliked it. Never struck me as a bad episode
Honestly I really hope you do a video on Patrick smart pants from season 4 I feel this is the best episode of the whole show or at least best post movie episode cause I really like the message
you know, considering the whole plot of this episode is some random couple thinking theyre patrick's parents, for all we know the same shit couldve happened with the other two and thats why patricks parents in the modern episodes look different. i mean, have the original parents ever even shown up after this? itd be kinda funny if they explain that patrick had this exact same scenario happen multiple times because of their collective stupidity
0:51 I can kinda get the backlash for Dumped tbh. Seeing SpongeBob be miserable for 2/3 of the episode with Patrick constantly making him feel worse isn’t the most fun watch.
11 year old me took it as a punchline being that Patrick is so stupid that he forgot that SpongeBob was only pretending to be stupid so I never considered it a bad episode myself, I don't blame anyone that does consider it bad though.
Honestly a personal gripe I have with the episode is how it's kind of ableist. Call me sensitive or whatever but I don't sit well with the fact Spongebob is like, nonverbal, and wears a helmet. He could've worn any other outfit, maybe a clown nose or a overalls to make him look dorky, but they chose a helmet. A lot disabled individuals with high support needs may wear helmets so they dont hit their head, as they have trouble with motor skills. Obviously this isn't to say we should cancel the creators or some shit, it's just dated in a kind of shitty way. I'm surprised more people aren't offended at the somewhat ableist messaging in this episode and are more offended at Patrick being an asshole. Maybe it's just me but that's personally why I've never really liked this episode. It doesn't tarnish Spongebob for me at all though.
@polocatfan I'm not saying that I am, I'm just saying that's how I felt. I'm diagnosed autistic myself as well. It doesn't give me the precedent to speak for the WHOLE spectrum and I'm very privileged to be someone whose on the lower end when it comes to support needs, but don't assume I'm not neurodivergent just because you disagree with me
I do think this is one of the duds of the early seasons, just because it does kinda show a bad side of Patrick that reminds of the later seasons when he’s a jerk to SpongeBob. Between Patrick and his “parents” and how they treat SpongeBob, how it’s all for nothing with the fact those aren’t his real parents, and the lack of resolution in the episode just makes it a bad watch. Even if the joke was that it’s titled I’m With Stupid, they can do stupid humor better, as evidenced by… the rest of the first three seasons. And in general, stupid humor doesn’t mean you can skip good storytelling. Aside from another episode I hate, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy 4. Just hated seeing all the citizens damaging SpongeBobs insides because, as a kid, I worry he’ll get hurt. And as an adult, I’m squeamish and hate that kinda stuff. But the episode at least has a good resolution.

This epiosde made me really mad and sad when i was a kid :(
2:36 SpongeBob a paradox confirmed.
I swear when I saw this episode as a kid Patrick’s shirt said “I’m with stupid” instead of “I’m with the dummy”
I never noticed it said I'm with the dummy
new Mandela effect just dropped
Yup me too

The sponge is our god
I always liked it as a kid, and even now, I'd take this over any modern Spongebob episode
honestly, if you ignore the funny edited dub, grandma's kisses is a far worse episode than i'm with stupid, ngl.
I know which dub you're talking about.

Didn’t expect a video so soon! Keep up the great work, your commentary and jokes are very well thought out and good.

This episode is the reason why patrick is a bad friend
I find the ending really disturbing and hilarious. Patrick forgot what his parents looked like and invited two weirdos into his home. Wtf
