- Today I am converting my Farmall Super C from 6 volts to 12 volts, and replacing the generator with an alternator. This is a common "update" to old tractors that are used often, and I'll walk you through the process.

And that Mr. Pete, is what separates you from the other many RUclipsrs. Your knowledge and experience as an engineer and demonstrating it to us is great. Your dads fabricating and wielding is above par. Both you and your wife have a blessed day.
When I was younger we had a Super C,H,and a Super MTA(my favorite). My dad and I would watch your videos and it would give us good phone conversations over the past couple years. I lost him on July 19th this year. Sure miss talking with him, but your videos help keep his memory close. Thank you.
Touching.
Sorry for the loss of your dad.
Sorry for your loss
Love to see 'old' equipment staying active. best thing about them, there is NO computer. Simple wiring. love them all
Converted a 1962 Ford 641 35 years ago without no RUclips or internet help. Put a 1974 Vega alternator on it, looked factory, and I've seen a lot of Rats nest wiring jobs in my time.
I really got a "charge" from the video. Just enjoying the "current" project . What a way to "start" lunch 😋
My dad was a Farmall dealership mechanic and had his own shop after the dealer closed. I remember he did several 12 volt conversions. NAPA was usually his parts source.
God job just I will get you to job
Nice bracket that your dad made
Pete you are a great teacher. I used to have a Super C too when I was farming. And you are spot on that is such a handy tractor to drive around the farm. In fact my dad always referred to it as his favorite “chore tractor”. But I hope you don’t have some regrets about not upgrading the head lights. You never know when you may want to take your wife out to the DQ some night.
Thanks for all of your dedication and efforts to make and post such high quality videos.
Pete!!!!
You tell everyone you were an Architect in the past....but are you sure you weren't a
1) Mechanical Engineer
2) Electrical Engineer
3) Civil Engineer
4) Millwright
5) All of the above??
You sure seem to know a lot more than any Architect I know......and I know a lot of them!!
Also, I sure hope your Dad received a big pork chop or two for that nice looking bracket he fabricated.
Boy, I (and probably a lot of your viewers) would love to have a neighbor like your Father!
Keep up the "Good work".
Rich from PA
Yes hot days = days in the shop!
It’s so good to see the Super C on the go again! Thanks for your videos. They are informative and well done.
I have enjoyed your videos very much. I have had a lifelong dream of farming. A line of duty injury has “retired” me earlier than I expected and I found your channel at a time that I needed. Thank you and Best Wishes!
I so love watching you working on the tractors my Dad was at collage in Kracow when the Germans invaded and he was studying agroculture engineering taken into to forced labour too pick carrots in southern Germany he escaped made his way too Spain with a friend and ended up in England and joined the free polish army as an engineer fought in Italy with Cassino on his list servierly wounded and evacuated back too England too be nursed by his future wife my mom. After the war he stayed in England and became a very well respected agrocultural engineer and I lloved being in his work shop pulling apart tractors or other farm tools
Wow, what a story! Thank you!
I really like your tractor repair videos. I know I won’t be the first or last to say it but that be a great tractor to do a total redo. I know you said in the past your not into a total refurb right now but maybe one day. Thanks keep them coming .
I am a 65 year youngster who sews and makes quilts but I love watching you and your tractors, and the rest. Agree about the mumbo-jumbo so my response is "Oh...OK" 😁
Always great to see your dad helping you do a repair on the equipment ❣️❣️❣️
Looking watching your farm from my hospital bed in the uk 🇬🇧
Pete, I love your no nonsense approach to life and especially the anti amazon parts porcurment.
Man I appreciate this video! I’ve got a B I’m restoring and that I’ve had electrical issues with and I’m just going to go this route instead!
Thanks again for video. Your very intelligent. God bless.
Great educational video, one wire Delco from the local NAPA store
I've got an H tractor I think we're going to switch it to 12 volt great video don't miss one of your videos such an informative person
Hi pete i am from the island of malta in the mediterranean i allways watch your videos . I used to work on a farm and very famiiar with tractors one particular was internation drott with chain wheels . Was used for trashing wheat with a belt attached to it. I wish you all well and keep given us that most satisfaction live on the farm thank you
Pete.... You make my day when I can have my morning coffee and watch your vlog at the same time. Your channel is so relaxing. Best to you and your wife.
Great job Dad on the alternator bracket! I was thinking along that line myself. Best wishes.
The new alternator needs some "patina" to match the rest of the tractor. I thoroughly enjoy these videos!!
Pete,
Many of us enjoy watching you working on old tractors. Keep up the good work.
Good one Pete! My dad had a Super C IH back when I was in my teens, always loved running it. So we had the Farmall H and the Super C and they both did an awesome job. Thanks for the reminder of days long ago. Have a nice week!
Pete the good old days of 6 volt systems and the fairly simple change over to 12 volts is interesting and gives you a little more trouble free option. Looking forward to part 2.
Your super C brings back some of my favorite childhood memories , going to my uncles farm in n. Florida, driving his super C. I learned to back a trailer on his tractor. I’m glad he was patient with me, I’ve backed a lot of trailers since then.
Really instructional, Pete. The more I watch, the more I catch up on my lack of knowledge regarding electricity. Your vids are always entertaining and most are highly educational. Thank you very much.
I knew that the master fabricator AKA dad was going to be in there somewhere thank you
Adding LED bulbs was a huge improvement on my M , 986 and 1586. I would highly suggest it!
I have no background or knowledge with the mechanics you restore so skillfully. You explain everything with so much ease - I actually follow along and learn so much! Well done - these videos are fantastic!
Always love the videos. Make my day a little bit better. I think all batteries should have the GO handle... Future video, you and Derek find an old Farmall that has been sitting for 30 years and ride it 500 miles back home...
Keep up with the great work
Nice conversion Pete. My issue with the 6v systems is the batteries for them tend to be nothing but cheap. 6V starters will endure 12V without major problems.
Pete your timing is once again impeccable! Just in time for lunch my friend.
My uncles super c works wonderful and as a bonus it has a front loader. It's the best starting tractor on his farm and is used for raking, cultivation, front loader work and most utility work.
Great to see you again all the best to you and your family Joe
what a cliffhanger, cannot wait until tomorrow. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Dad raised a good kid.
Cs are such great tractors. It's so small maybe restore would be easy in winter????
Thanks Pete ...I have my Grand dads 51 super C ..Use it all the time for grading my road.hauling firewood and mowing.Always though about changing it to 12v ....But it still charges just fine.Still has og generator and regulator.I just love me some old Farmalls!!
Interesting video Pete. I always enjoy seeing you working on tractors.
How are you feeling now? Are you fully recovered from Covid?
Sometimes you are re the windshield and sometimes your the bug you maent to say Pete, you have my upmost admiration with your tractor work, experience is a wonderful thing.
I converted my old Ford 601 last summer best thing I ever done
Got to love Dad, the brackets are made with love. Experience pays off.
It's great you have your Dad there with you I sure miss mine he could make things work sometimes he used a little baling wire but it worked enjoy what time you have with your Dad I sure miss mine
I hope you clean it and paint it all! It sure needs it but you know that better than I do! Always a pleasure to see you!God bless!💞
Yeah, ya start paying more attention to one tractor the other tractors get jealous and start having a pity party problems. The good ol' Super C looks like it feels better already.😁🚜
Good video, couldn't understand what you were explaining but it was interesting to me. See you next vid.
The restoration has begun. I know your tired and you don’t want to do it, but it’s started!
I missed not going through a door today, but that's ok...the electrical lesson was worth it!
excellent video. no nonsense or awful music. right to the point with helpful info
There’s a winter project if ever I saw one 😂. Love your videos, reminds me of my past life when I was younger
I was wondering about the Super C, I know it was your "Go to" Fencer machine. Now that the secret is out now we know. I have a 1951 Plymouth Cranbrook that is a 6 volt that I would love to convert to 12 volt. Thanks to you, I have a clue.
That's for great instruction on how to convert 6volt to 12volt farmall tractor
Great video. You have a natural ability to talk to the camera that I need to learn.
So appreciate that you produce things and work on things! And then share the process as I learn something every time. Thank you.
I had lots of 6 volt troubles too, going thru several cheap aftermarket regulators and then adjusting them but they wouldn't hold the right voltage, too little then too much. What a pain. But then I bought an expensive regulator from Brillman. What a difference, trouble free from then on!
love the video Pete. Reminds me of the time my Dad and I converted a 1948 Chevy 2 1/2 ton truck from 6 volt to 12.volt. We left on the originial starter and man did it spin starting that 265 Chevy 6 cylinder.
We love seeing Dad!!!
Hi Pete, I too am a 1953 model. All my life 53 has been my year and even the number 53 has been one of my favoured numbers. The number on Herbie the love bug Volkswagen Beatle was 53. I really liked you story of your neighbour who liked his tractor ‘cause it was a 53. I though I was the only one like that. We are all likely that way.
really enjoy watching you work on tractors! Thanks for sharing Pete!
I just changed out my 1956 300 Utility. Works great. Thanks for sharing Pete.
Oh Pete... this is a cliffhanger !! Hurry up and give us part 2. Greetings from Australia.😀
Surprised it moved🚜💨💨💨
I’ve noticed you’re always wearing college tshirts. We’re in Bolivar Ohio and we’re loving the Ohio State shirt tonight! Go Buckeyes! Love your channel!
Heck yeah, I enjoyed the video. Always in for a little education while you work.
I wouldn't call myself a guy that is into doing any type of engine work! But for reason I'm sure relate to Pete seemingly knowing how it's done. I tend to enjoy these videos which also cover the other things that he seems to enjoy doing so much on his farm. Thanks for sharing Pete, and I am looking forward to part two. Enjoy the warm weather Fall then winter 🥶 will be here before you know it.
Thank you for what you are doing on your channel. My wife and I really enjoy watching you. I have also started using your videos in the agriculture classes that I teach.
Windshield-bug! :) Thanks for another great video!
Another good video Pete i still enjoy learning alway nice to see dad whenever
Pete, é gratificante ver seu pai tirando você do apuro.. 😂😂😂😂
Ele fez um bom trabalho ao criar você como uma cópia dele, valorize isso.
Super abraço para toda família aqui do meu amado Brasil 🇧🇷.
Good to see you all OK pete 👍 and love the videos thank you
thanks for the video, to show the differences between the 12 and 6 volts system and hook-up
I did this same project on my M. I used an internal resisted coil. Same procedure and same issues. I didn't have any manuals so I spent more time on RUclips watching. Starting and stopping the video at each step lol.
That is a good upgrade for the Super C.
Very enjoyable once more.
Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug, sometimes you're the Louisville slugger, sometimes you're the ball .... "The Bug" by Dire Straits.
I do enjoy your videos. Giving us some great advice as I am looking to homestead here soon. See you next time.
Have you thought about maybe restoring the super c? I think it would be fitting especially since it has been so loyal for so long.
Yes yes!
Love that old Super C. Mr. Larson is an engineering genius who can make anything you need. I look forward to seeing the Super C back in service.
Thanks Pete Enjoyed can’t wait till the finish.
Pete, I'd kind of like to see you rebuild/restore that little tractor! Last you for the rest of your life and look good too!
I could watch you all day. :)
Thanks for sharing buddy
Nice bracket. Its obviously the right choice for you and you're doing a nice job. I have mixed feelings on the conversion. The purist in me thinks a generator looks so much better. But they don't charge much at lower speed and regulators are a pain. In my old tractor experience I have two issues with most 12v alt conversions I see:
1. They did it to make it crank faster because the tractor doesn't start worth a crap due to another problem (like low compression).
And/or
2. The conversion and alternator mounting is terrible - misalignment that eats/throws belts, won't hold belt tension, ammeter/voltmeter doesn't work/missing, hood cut out with an axe, etc.
Good to have 596 so close. Great mechanical mind.
Great video as always
Nice T-shirt
Go Bucks!
You the man get on Ole School. Show em how it use to be done. I did the conversion to my 64 Massey.
Ole School Jim in Virginia
Good job my Friend
This was definitely a Pete's way video. Cool little tractor for sure.
"Sometimes you beat the band, sometimes the band beats you." - pretty sure that's the quote.... ; )
Excellent video Pete :) no problem on part 2 or more videos to do on Super C Farmall 1953 also excellent how explained how converter 12 Negative ground to GM Delco Alternator from Generator setup and so cool! Also I know when did Generator to GM Delco Alternator on my Dad 1963 McCormick International B414 Loader tractor Desiel motor was easy on wire up and bracket setup was task to make for funny part Generator belt was same size plus length to use on Alternator to plus slider adjuster also all wires plus connectors lots fun to do up! I had take Generator, Regulartor box off orgnailly had but was 4 hours totally to do in and made up my own schematics on wire plus brackets for know do in future and new owners of farm called me up recently to replace ALTERNATOR again because old I put in 1994 wore out plus belts need my help out! Also on 1968 McCormick International 105C combine gas motor had do GM Delco Alternator on to last Friday to , plus on 1968 International 624 A Desiel fuel motor tractor too years ago when Generator on my dad also replaced yesterday for New owners on farm to plus 1978 International 724 B loader Desiel fuel motor tractor years ago and yesterday to and amazing me 1997 farm sold all GM Delco Alternator lasted long time on combine and tractors too! All them were 100 amps type 2 pole with Regulartor inside used too single pulleys!
I did about the same thing on my 48 cub . A long time ago. I was probably 13/14 years old. I’m 48 now and it’s still in my garage. But back then I changed my coil and put the resistor on my lights. And then one of my lights started finally burning out. I changed them over to 12 V. One thing I always like about changing the old tractors over is the starter turns over a lot nicer in 12 V. I’m sure they get a little hotter so you wouldn’t wanna keep cranking on them. But I don’t recall ever really having a problem with that.
ANY antique tractor lessons on electrical or hydraulic are much appreciated!! Pete, you teach very well
Great video! That super c is my favorite tractor of your collection. Reminds me a bit of my Allis model B. Although I honestly think I'd have a bigger soft spot for a farmall, the allis came along cheap and it ran really good. Also converted it to 12v with a tiny 1 wire alternator, made my own brackets too! Thanks for the videos.
For an architect your very good with mechanics. I'm guessing it's not your only profession.
👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🗽🙏🏻 Enjoyed! The newly painted bracket sure makes the hood look bad, just saying. You gotta love that Ole Super "C"! A true friend to a wise farmer!
Awesome video, never seen a 6 to 12 volt conversion. Thanks for sharing.
Enjoy watching you work on the tractors. Always learn something.
