I love how when Charlie said “sir I don’t want to get in trouble with the First Lady.” The president immediately says, “Give me the medicine Charlie.”
You can tell at 2:42 Martin Sheen forgets his next line and Dule Hill steps in to remind him that his next line is to Charlie thereby saving the walk and talk. Nice subtle work, Dule!!
well spotted.
Dule rule
Brilliant observation, and so very obvious once you pointed it out. Burton Guster (Dule Hill) for the win!
C'mon son!
Imagine having to redo the entire walk and talk with hundreds of people just because "damn it! what's the line, Aaron!?
@@uptown3636 Bruton Gaster
"it helps not to know him" CJ was the best
She had a special torch with Josh's name on it that she would burn him with regularly.
@Linda Grammer haha YES! The way he delivered that *technically* was absolutely beautiful 😅
"We Love You Josh!" His fan club!
"It helps not to know him!" CJ got some awesome lines!
JoshLemonLymon
that sounded ablibed lol
TBF, the back medicine did, in fact, make him goofy.
@callmecatalyst The thing about incredibly popular people is that their popularity doesn't exactly disappear on a dime, even if the person in question does some rather nasty things. Trump has a LOT of support among Republicans right now, and its a reality that we're all just going to have to live with.
Right after the bit at 2:05 might have been Toby's most genuine laugh of the whole show.
It’s a tie between this laugh and when CJ fell in the pool when Toby was recruiting her to join Bartlet for America.
@@lemmiwinks09 Interesting to notice how Toby just STOPS having genuine moments of laughter after season 1, since recruiting CJ was a flashback.... Poor Toby, his character was treated so poorly, especially once Aaron Sorkin left the show.
@@lemmiwinks09 I think you’re forgetting the one when he laughs at Josh about something when they’re trying to get Donna in the snow
"Nice room and some supper" was an actual ad lib from Martin, I've heard; that probably contributes to why...
The actor is very interesting. I can't recall who else auditioned for Toby, but they thought they had it because he was so quiet in the room.
If people didn't realise what else was great about this scene apart from the obvious, is that this was the longest scene as single tracking shot atleast at that time. I believe it took 3 days to shoot this. It's considered one of the best cold opens of TWW. Source: west wing weekly podcast
Episode 2.06 “The Lame Duck Congress w/ Dave Chameides” for those who are curious. It’s a great podcast and I adore Hrishi & Josh’s rapport.
Pretty sure they only had one night in the hotel location.
Wild, isn’t it? Steadycam operator down several flights of stairs and some backwards!
Incredible they had the balls to pull off this shot and I only see the steady-cam operator in one shot @ 1:08 for maybe a few frames in the reflection on the bread proofing machines. It's practically unnoticeable, unless you look for it, but the fact they shot it that way is amazing. Outstanding cinematography.
had to look really hard for it. They did their best by sending someone thru with a tray immediately before, to try and distract from the image. Cinematography very well thought out before the shot. Excellent!
The steadycam operator for this shot was on the West Wing Weekly podcast and said he noticed that during the first attempt at it, so he asked Allison Janney to make a big movement to attract the viewers' attention, hence CJ grabbing josh's arm, and whirling around at that moment.
@@jigurd Wow, what a deluded-and-Wrongness-filled Show. Im impressed: So this is how those that know least about America and its Place in the World think of it all?
@@slevinchannel7589 I don't know what made you seek out youtube clips of a show you clearly don't like, and respond to a comment about a production detail of a complicated shot to air you grievances, but I hope you get through whatever you're going through and that it gets better.
@@jigurd If I hadn't read Phil's comment about the steady-cam operator, I never would have found out about those few frames. And I've watched this scene repeatedly over the years, because it's just so excellent. I'd say the operator's request to Allison Janney was a resounding success.
I watched entire series in 2 weeks. For me 2020 is year of “The West Wing”!
I adore it!
Same thing here... I am now having withdrawals! I finished it right on the stroke of midnight on the 25th of December 2020 when it got Netflix removed it like a Christmas Grinch... I am so glad I finally experienced it.
Wait it's not on Netflix anymore?
Gave us hope for what was to come.
I recently finished watching the whole seven season too.
The 29 minute mark of episode 5, season 1 is an eye opener to what we have experienced worldwide during 2020/21
@@lmc333 I did the same thing!
Hey there fella! She deserves a nice room and some supper! LOL
You love doing that, don't you sir.
If Jed Bartlet said that to me while I was making out with someone backstage, I would propose on the spot. Never question President Bartlet.
Maybe a quiet nod to a similar long tracking scene in the movie "Goodfellas"? That scene includes Henry and Karen walking through hallways and then through a restaurant kitchen - and on their way Henry makes a similar comment to a man and woman who are embracing.
@@Sunny105121 "Every time I come here! Every time you two! Don't you work?"
I wonder how many presidents did that in real life. I can see both Bushes (especially 43), Obama, and Biden doing that.
Why is his writing so fucking good?
“Shut up. I want you to look calm while I tell you this.”
the *GREATEST* show in the _HISTORY_ of television
2:34 Schiff stumbles over 'to disprove that...' but recovers quickly enough that they kept the take. I bet everyone breathed a sigh of relief that they wouldn't have to reset... again...
The Best Tv Show Ever. Ever. We want The West Wing Back!!!
Such a great show. Ugh, those were the days...
Absolute gold!! ...so many great one-liners, so many clean setups and knock-downs, and all that delightful subtext, and in one of the most upbeat moments I can remember from that show, through it all, Toby is still Toby, and while walking and talking. Great stuff!!
Half expected the couple from Goodfellas to walk past them going the opposite way.
You can't help but think of the walk and talk in Goodfellas as well...with a similar reference to the characters passing a kissing couple and making a remark. All talent. Love it.
I miss this show. ❤️
At 0:48 as Josh gets to the top of the stairs, you can see Bradley Whitford do a few "steps in place" before actually descending the stairs, probably to give the camera guy a second to catch up behind him
Am I the only one in awe of the camera work?
it's kind of the point of this clip of being a 3 minute walk & talk shot lol
I love and miss The West Wing.
one the the greatest shows in the history of TV and one of the best walk and talks ever
2:40 you can hear Sheen forgetting his line and Dulé Hill getting him started.
Good spot, not sure how I didn't see that before. He literally says 'uhhhh'. Not sure what Dule was planning to do if Sheen didn't pick the thread back up!
Not sure it isn't Dule who's late with his line, and Sheen almost proceeding with his line out of order with the dialog. Hard to tell, but either way it's good acting, and saved the run of an incredibly complicated scene.
OMG. That was amazing. No wonder this is a promo; you get to know a little bit about so many characters of TWW.
Wow, what a deluded-and-Wrongness-filled Show. Im impressed
2021 - notice the camera man in the reflection of the oven? yep. He's there. NO ONE CARES. Because it is a damn good scene!
There are a few "wipes" along the way also, whereby someone walks across camera or we go behind a column, which allows secret cuts to be made if the actors fluff their lines. Doesn't look like they were used though
@@blackmore_s The West Wing Weekly podcast talked about this particular scene with the director and camera guy. No wipes. One big long take, and it took a few tries to nail it.
I actually love that it's there now that I know where it is, partially because I watched this scene 50 times before someone told me it was there, and also because it feels akin to the crackle of a vinyl record - it's the imperfection that cements its authenticity for me.
This was a great cast and a great show
So crazy how young they all look. When I see them today in other things (except Bradley who has gone gray), I thought they looked the same. Until I saw this. Not that it matters--it is STILL some of the best TV EVER!!
Bradley still looks gorgeous tho.
These clips are fab. This is the first time im seeing TWW in HD
my favorite thing about TWW are these walk and talks. They can do exposition and you look around to see where they are going.
Wow, what a deluded-and-Wrongness-filled Show. Im impressed:

@@slevinchannel7589 You’re not 100% repetitive repetitive repetitive are you?
@@cg5739 No, cause 'commenting the same to reach more people' isnt the Defintion of the word repetitive
The last line is the zinger. “It helps not to know him!”
I can't believe I didn't start watching until...it was off the air.
CJ looking amazing as usual
I would like to thank you for the efforts you have made in writing this article. I am hoping the same best work from you in the future as well. Thanks.........
I never thought about it til recently that not only did TV never do stuff like this but MOVIES weren’t doing it much either!
2:03 "Every time I come here! Every time, you two! Don't you work?"
that cuople kissing probably had a life making experience that night....
So. Darn. Good!
My favourite Walk and Talk scenes will always be from HouseMd. Such a great show. I miss it terribly 😫
Me too, remember the ep with the midget lady, wanna go for a spin? lol
@@daviddundas4140 Are You High? Higher than you! 😂
I miss that show!
Reminds me of when Atreus walks with Odin (same actor as Toby Ziegler) through Asgard in God of War: Ragnarok
"I thought my work was outstanding Mr President." 😂
I just finished binge watching the entire 7 seasons in 14 days before Netflix removed the excellent serie on Christmas day... It was my very first time watching The West Wing and its 154 episodes! It is so good ! Everything that is discussed is still true 20 years later, earily scary to think that the trump administration most likely just took the template from The West Wing to fit their agenda. I finished watching with just a few milíseconds to spare before the stroke of midnight of the 25th of December, when Netflix is handing it over to HBOmax... Which feels like the Grinch stole my Christmas present... I should have been rewàrded with something for completing it by Christmas, other than having the satisfaction of experiencing one of the best shows Ever !
Now go listen to The West Wing Weekly podcast! It’s excellent!
I always forget all the Secret Service guys you see on this show aren’t really trained to kill anyone with their bare hands. 😂
Anyone else think of Bobby Kennedy getting assassinated in a kitchen?
Yep - that was the Ambassador Hotel, also in LA. Ever seen Deep Impact (1998)? The early scene where we first meet the President (Morgan Freeman) was filmed in the hotel kitchen where RFK was assassinated.
I believe this was one of the first shows that did the walk and talk.
The Larry Sanders Show did the walk and talk 7 years earlier
What a long way to get some cheese.
On the DVD, right around the 1:08 mark on this video ...you can see the reflection of the camera operator. It's a lot easier to spot on the DVD going frame by frame.
On youtube (at least on the web) you can go frame by backwards and forwards with the comma and period keys, respectively.
I thought there was one or two longer than this.
Are we going to get The West Wing on HBO Max Mexico? Pretty please.
Great show
Lol HILARIOUS!
Thank you to my mother for introducing me to such an amazing show!
It's the little things: at 1:35 the President is thanking some random kitchen staff
Nothing ever was better on TV than The Wire, The West Wing, The Simpsons & Seinfeld
I would say The Newsroom is up there.
Hill Street Blues
The Simpsons & Seinfeld? Where children are making fun of adults & adults being cruel, to other?
Was this all one take? Wow
Wow! Hello CJ!
Charlie- please sir, the first lady scares me, just take the medicine.
When is hbo max coming to Canada
Did I just hear Toby laugh??
1:42 Awesome moment in this series
Ah yes back when Cerberus was in charge of the white house
And had a physician by the name of Hackett. I am not making that up.
Ok, I had to do a quick refresh of my brain, but very funny 😄 well said
And just like with Jimmy Hoffa, I can't help but ask, "Where's Mandy?"
And just like with Hoffa you’ll never get an answer.
She served no purpose anymore so she vanished.
Lol this is brilliant
The difference between Mandy and Jimmy Hoffa is that people cared about what happened to Hoffa.
The show was originally supposed to be about the West Wing staff with the President showing up on occasion. Martin Sheen was only supposed to appear about once a month. I think in the first season’s intro Rob Lowe and Moira Kelly got top billing, with the rest of the cast following in alphabetical order. After the pilot was made and shown, it became clear that the President had to be a more central character. They ended up dropping Kelly’s storyline, and at the same time they bumped up Janel Moloney (Donna Moss) to help with plot exposition, comedy, as well as become a love interest for Josh Lyman.
Wow, a WW clip that isn't 240p!
Make it available in Brazil, please!
You can tell the line where Sheen says “hey there fella, she deserves a nice room and a dinner,” was ad-libbed, because Schiff began to speak almost immediately after. Then the two have the back and forth “you like to do that don’t you,” which I believe is schiff asking on camera that he likes to add lines to mess with the cast. This show is genuinely one of the most brilliant ever made.
🇬🇧Great 🎞📽🎬television series showing what is like inside "the white house"
when this amazing serie will be available in latinoamerica? (chile)
I'm coming to appreciate that HBO Max has the ability to upload onto RUclips at 1080p when so many users have been posting such a great show at an embarrassing 240p.
Yes, first world problems lol. I stand by my statement :D
Dear HBOMAX ,

Here's Why Reason HBO ASIA Is Hated:
- Too Much Censored every R Rated movie (Language 99% 1% Non Language)
- The Ratio Movie Is CHANGE
- The Sound Is Change
- New Movie Is WAITING FOR 1 or 2 Year (Example WW 84)
- Every Warner Movie Ratio are CHANGE ( 4:3 Zoom Ratio)
- More Banned Movie That HBO USA Did Not Showing in HBO MAX (Such as Hustlers 2019, Mile 22, Rambo Last Blood, The Rymth Section, Angel Has Fallen, Bombshell 2019.)
- NOT too Much Movie Enough
P.S RELEASE HBO MAX INTERNATIONAL
They're trying super hard but it's different when it comes to international markets because now you have to deal with those countries entertainment laws and Asia particularly China just does not like to work with America film companies that can't be controlled or monitored fully
Chris is right. Anything like HBO Max International would just get blacked out. You could get a VPN to get past that but then you might end up in hotter water. Would be good to know the consequences before jumping into the pool.
All that said, you need to work on your government and not blame the corporation. Ones like the CCP are ones corporations don't control or manipulate. That's where the people do have to step up.
What is the D section?
I assume it's a segment of the speech. A section might be introduction, B would be one topic, C another, then on to D where Bartlett went off-script. Toby said he wrote 37 pages, so guessing the sections are like chapters.
Bad back medicine. See what the boys and girls in the back room will have and tell them I am having the same.
Destry Rides Again? Destiny?
Where was that shot? Any ideas? Or can they build a set that elaborate for one shot?
Millennium Biltmore Hotel, Downtown LA.

Assuming the purpose of this clip is to get people interested - or re-interested - in the West Wing, providing info on what season and episode this scene is from would be...helpful?
Season 1, “Five Votes Down” (I don’t the episode number)
Goodfellas inspired.
The West Wing is the main reason I dislike House of Cards
And the reality lies somewhere between the two. At least that's my suspicion.
Same. I really don't care for this apparent love for overly-edgy crap that studios seem to think people want. That is how we got Twilight and Batman vs Superman. For one thing, it kills the shock value when something really bad happens to a main character, because you know it is coming. Like that reporter in House of Cards. Or every single episode of Game of Thrones.
I'm still annoyed Lionel Tribby and Ainsley Hayes didn't go the distance but still love West Wing.
Opposite for me. House of cards, Kevin spacey aside, makes no bones of how empty and meaningless modern politics actually is. People dislike it cus it shows them what their politicians are actually like
@@khymaaren The Pod Save America guys who worked for President Obama have said that Veep is actually the most realistic portrayal of working in the White House between all of the tv shows.
Reboot please =)
NOOOO. Just eternal reruns. It wouldn't be the same without all those young, semi-unknown actors and actresses, with the occasional icon (Sheen, etc.)!

If this was RL it would have been the second USSS security failure for not clearing the egress route beforehand. The assassination attempt would have been another because they didn't secure the vantage points overlooking the exit.
