  • Hey guys OSG here with the follow up video to C64 games that ZZap scored unbelievably low. In this video we are going to be looking at the flip side of that and probably the ones that we remember the most. I’m sure we can all remember buying a game on the strength of a review when we were younger but every now and again we were…. Well there is no easy way to say this….lied to resulting in us expecting a great game but then getting a mediocre one at best.
    I’ve trawled through loads of high scoring games in Zzap (most of which are great id like to add) and found 10 games that were way overrated in Zzap64. I’ve stuck to scores over 90% as they were the ones that really made us go out and buy the games and put them in order of how far apart I would say they are from the actual score that the game deserved.
    So without more delay lets take a look at the 10 most overrated Commodore 64 Games by Zzap64!

    A lot of these games were a lot better when I was 8 years old, thats for sure. A lot of your picks come from the 'bad' phase of Zzap64 when the glory years had well and truly ended and the reviewers and style were radically different. Great video though, I love these.

    I think the acid test for me was that my mate had a C64 and we, ahem, had a large and pretty complete collection of games. I cannot remember ever playing any of these (maybe Ball Blazer for 5 minutes) . However, Summer Games, Winter Games, Paradroid, Kick start, Uridium, Marble Madness - yes those were good games.

    Ferrari was an attempted simulation of Formula 1. I liked the realistic natural when it came to car configuration, setup and the practice and qualifying but yeah, the actual racing was horrible. I went and had a look at the Amiga and Atari ST versions and they're not much better. The PC DOS version seems to be the best. Says a lot at how bad the racing is when a 1988 game is the best on the PC.

  • @CraigGrannell
    @CraigGrannell 2 года назад +6

    The fundamental error in Zzap!64’s reviewing system happened after Chris Anderson left. Before then, you didn’t need 90% for a Sizzler nor a ridiculous 97% for a gold medal (later lowered to 96%). But after that point, although the magazine used the full ratings range (memorably scoring some games in the low single figures), it seemed to feel compelled to squash things up at the high end. Hence you have Hawkeye-a game you could recommend but that for me at the time probably deserved about 80%-shifted upwards by two degrees. You also have absurd situations where the likes of Wizball misses out on the highest accolade due to an arbitrary barrier, despite the game objectively being state of the art.

    • @oldstylegaming
      @oldstylegaming  2 года назад

      Yeah its like they left no place for really good games to go by giving the mediocre ones 90+ scores and vice versa for the bad ones.

    • @CraigGrannell
      @CraigGrannell 2 года назад

      @@oldstylegaming For the most part, ratings should be on a bell curve, if you’re being exhaustive in coverage-which you could almost be in those days. Zzap! ratings had that *except* the skew at the high end. You do wonder how things would have shifted has a Sizzler been 80%+ and GMs dished out not for a specific score but when an editor thought a game deserved that gong-kind of like what happens with a modern-day editor’s choice award.
      (These days, ratings tend to skew more positive because there’s less space for products that are mediocre. Mags I write for tend to be full of 4/5 and 5/5 ratings not because we are going easy on products, but because we just don’t review the crap.)

      I can't see how they could of done better, it was at least a better effort than Double Dragon despite being only 1 player game, the creatures are still rideable, the presentation and music is very accurate, and ending sequence is all there, and because of that it has one of the best ending sequence on the C64.

    • @mamehaze

      "I can't see how they could of done better" Even if I wasn't a C64 fanboy growing up, I've come to acknowledge it was capable of delivering arcade quality experiences where other platforms weren't. In this case every single other port of the game I've played delivered a vastly superior game. The essence of this kind of game is crowd management; taking the correct positions on screen not to be overwhelmed or leave yourself vulnerable to other attacks. Being able to ride creatures is pointless when all the fighting is one-on-one as much of the reason you'd want to use one is gone.
      I played through the C64 version after watching this review, and frankly I thought it was diabolical. I've played cheap knock-off budget games that got more right in terms of the gameplay than this did. It looks alright (not great) and has some decent music, but the core of the game is missing, and that's the most important part. If compromises to the speed were needed to keep the gameplay in tact those should have been made.
      The C64 could, and should have done a lot better with this one.

    • @carn9507
      @carn9507 2 года назад

      @@mamehaze Yeah, the Spectrum and CPC ports of Golden Axe had several enemies on screen (in one shot I have here I see two brutes, one of which is sat on a dragon, plus two of the lil dudes you kick for power ups so that's like five entities not including either player) AND the 2 player mode the C64 was lacking so yeah I find it odd the C64 didn't have those. Same goes for other beat em ups like the Turtles one. Got a shot here of that on the CPC with Leo facing FIVE foot soldiers at same time AND it's got a 2 player mode. And plays really well. The C64 version had several enemies on screen (making it better than Golden Axe) but not quite as many as CPC/Spec and again it's lacking the 2 player mode (also the Turtles lack their individual colour bands due to the colour per sprite limit of the C64 whereas the CPC version has all the colours). I just feel the C64 could have done a lot better with these ports than the ones that came out.

Also, sometimes the excellent graphics drop into block ZX Spectrum territory. It has all the hallmarks of something that was released before it was ready, lacking some essential polish.

    In 8 out of 10 cases, the inflated scores all come from 'later' Zzap, when the original reviewers had departed. I'd moved to the Amiga by November 1986 so never saw most of these games. Nor, indeed, the later magazines. I suspect that, with a diminishing C64 scene, generous scores were handed out more frequently.

Zzap accuracy reviews post-Penn/Rignall tailed off imho. I only recently discovered that Paul Sumner was a fictional reviewer - WTF!

    Aww... The Jetsons... I bought this and couldn't get passed the first level. I still don't know what to do. Luckily Zzap published a walkthrough but ... Really? Did they check this or just used the walkthrough as a page filler? Another game that scored fair enough by Zzap is Steg the Slug. Well, I'm amazed it got any score at all since the manual gives hints that are impossible to do in the C64 version and fails to inform that at later levels (I think I remember it's level 6) you simply HAVE to find the secret in the level to progress. I thought secrets are done kind of a bonus for advanced players. Well, anyway. Another great video. Thank you. Oh, also .. Wizball is overrated
    In my honest opinion.

    The most overrated C64 game I had was “The Eidolon”…
    I’m pretty sure it got a ZZap Gold Medal around 1985/1986…
    The whole instruction booklet was really good, a huge foldout explaining the background storyline…
    The graphics were very, very impressive for the time…
    But, after playing it a few times, it just became very, very boring and repetitive, same grey cave environment, no real skill in shooting…etc etc…
    It was a case of it having an abundance of style, but no substance or playability whatsoever…

    I'm not a Ballblazer fan on any system, tried it first on the Atari 8-bit system, technical marvel, then on the slower C64.
    Even the Lucasfilm team admit, the game ONLY works as a 2-player game and game built around the specific A8 hardware features.

    I bought Ferrari Formula One. There is a LOT of stuff in this game, but the racing bit (the most important bit of a racing game) is terrible. It doesn't feel like you're racing, it's slow. The controls are terrible. And... if you made a 180 degree turn, you will have completed a 360 turn. Wicked. Grand Prix Circuit had a lot of faults and little depth, but it was a way more fun racer. Still, best racer ever: Revs.
