fun fact the car that almost kills Clara's dad at the start of the episode is the same car model and colour as the car that killed Rose's dad in the episode father's day. Likewise Clara's mum's grave says she died on March 5th 2005. The first new who episode "rose" is set on this date and so its a popular fan theory that Clara's mum died in the Auton invasion from that episode.
Even here, at the beginning of this Clara's time with the Doctor, she's willing to sacrifice something close to her heart in order to save people... just an excellent companion. Clara is definitely one of my favorite of the Doctor's companions.
The Doctors speech in this one is another one of those scenes I hinted at being tied for best moment in the series. That delivery was so well done. As usual, I'll give no spoilers. Just know that while that scene will be hard to follow up, they do manage to pull it off again after this. No hints as to when or where or how many times it happens though. You'll just have to keep watching and discover those moments for yourself.
My favourite episode ever of doctor who, it combines modern and classic style so well, when Clara and the Doctor are walking around the alien market place it reminded me of London with all the market stalls. The chemistry between The Doctor and Clara is on point, the emotional moments of this episode with Clara's backstory with her mum, the little girl singing and two powerful speeches one from the Doctor and the other one from Clara were immense and emotionally moving. I think that most of the first trips in the tardis adventures for a companion into the future are negative ones, 1 Rose The end of the world, 2. Martha Gridlock 3. Donna The fires of pomeii and 4 Amy The beast below but with Clara yes the backstory is sad because of her mum but her first adventure with The Doctor is a positive one and that sets up her character nicely in knowing that her story will have more positive aspects. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to Jay and Everyone.
Not a lot of people pick up on this but the Date of Clara's mum's death on the tombstone, is the same date that 1x01 Rose aired. So did she die in the attack of the autons?
not quite right. IRL the episode aired on march 23rd. However we learn in the later episode "aliens of london" that auton invasion occurred on march 5th in universe.
One of my favorite episodes. Definitely an emo 🖤 one, and I agree with you - then 11 delivers an unforgettable classically awesome Doctor speech! Clara is such a good companion ❤
This episode, although 'weird' and certainly 'unique' by most metrics, is a great blend of an operatic adventure with many emotions, fear, loss, horror, awe, relief and many more. Not to mention an amazing speech from Matt (Best since the Pandorica in my opinion) and showing Clara to be a very active companion. Interesting thought on her...... "looks different" she says to her house when returning home, but it's not the place that's changed, but her. Upon rewatch, this episode really hits harder.
Finally, the last episode of Smith's run I'm specifically looking forward to. Said back when you started him that he's my least favorite and was hoping that watching it again "with you" would help. Still my least favorite, but it has been a good reminder that he's definitely got more great moments that I forget about. This speech is one of my favorite things he does, and now we're just a few episodes away from Capaldi, nearly tied with Tennant for best, but Tennant just edges him out, more because he was given better stories to work with than anything. Allons-y!
Brilliant ending to a kinda mid episode. If they had nailed the build up so Matt's stunning speech at the end felt earned, this would have gone down as an all-time classic.

@22:56 - the most important ring of Akhaten
Matt Smith gives one hell of a speech
We are very thankful for the woman in the shop!

That speech scene is such a goosebumpfest oh my GAWD never gets old
This episode has always been be one I really love, not just in terms of the music but also the magnificent speeches by the Doctor and Clara.

This episode is in my top 5, it really resonated with me. Lovely reaction, as always
Merry went on to star in the 2021 movie CODA which won the best picture Oscar. It’s a beautiful movie I highly recommend it.
Love the song. Great episode too.
"Voice of an angel right there."
Later: "MAN shut your a**" lol
19:19 this song is actually my alarm tehe (I mean you skipped it but the melody is "pleeeeeeease wake upppp wake uppppp")
definitely on my top 10 favourite dr who episodes
OMG I DIDNT REALISE HOW CLOSE WE ARE TO EP 15
clara is the best companion.
Absolutely! She's so clever! The perfect foil for The Doctor!

Thank you, Jay! ⏳

Love this one!
This episode gets a lot of flak but I love it. It’s one of my comfort episodes I go back to over and over.
A very happy new year to you sir. And forgive me for saying this, but for a straight man, you are quite handsome.
Thank you so much!! Happy new year to you as well 😁
Ripper ep
I like this episode the least. It's a bit Disney. Not a fan of a song episode and the Doctor's monologue. It's jumping the shark.
