My knee surgery was postponed until 1/30. Wanted to go through your book on joy during my recovery. But just started your book today along with a Phiippians devotional and study in depth the book of Philippians. Please join me in prayer through this process leading up to my surgery. I can sense deep emotional and financial worry approaching as I will be out for 12 weeks recovering. Thank you Pastor Matthew!

Hi Pastor Matthew! I absolutely love this idea. I do something similar that I learned through inductive Bible studies with Precept ministries. They published a Bible (one in ESV, other in NASB). At the beginning of every chapter there’s a blank line for the reader to entitle it. We choose our titles by using key words/themes from that chapter. At the end of each book is an “At-a-Glance chart” on which you note the chapter titles, segments of the book according to the major themes (ex from Romans: 1. Doctrine, 2. Service) we try to use words that are in the text to help remember the text. I’ve been doing these studies, book by book, since 1994 until about a couple of years ago. They really helped me in my methods and my exposition classes at DTS when I was there. Just wanted to share! Thank you for your encouragement! Love your teaching.

If you have an inductive study Bible, there is space at the end of each book to write chapter titles/notes, as well as making lists of themes, characters, etc. it really makes you think about how you would choose what’s most important in each chapter.

I don’t take your news as bragging. You accomplished a noble and God honoring goal. Your actions demonstrate your devotion. You are an inspiration.
I started a goal about 7 years ago to “color code” my Bible using an approach I developed. It helps me understand the purpose, flow and interconnectedness of each verse that I have found helpful the next time I read it.

Thank you for this. It is encouraging. I have been reading in 1 Chronicles, which is lists and lists and lists of unpronounceable names. I'll be the first to admit it is not easy. But last night I realized that even when I don't think I am getting much out of it or even understanding much, there's something about God's Word that is healing and peace giving and life giving. I can't even explain it. I don't mean it in a "magical" sort of way. But, as I am sure you know, this is not just a regular book! I adore reading. There are tons of books I love and re-read and that even inspire me or comfort me. Nothing is the same as reading God's Word. Even when it's just a bunch of names and battles that are hard to keep track of, there's still something there. It's like a reset for my mind. The more insane the culture gets, the more I realize I desperately need it. As I get older, my fear is that my eyesight and/or hearing will get so bad that I can no longer read or even listen to it. That's why I need to get as much of it into my mind as possible, for as long as I can. The thought of losing God's Word really does send me into near panic. I just... NEED it. It's the only thing that's real. I can't explain it any better than that. There are so few people who understand!

I was loving your comment. I totally agree that even when you read difficult books to understand or pronounce I tell myself and am assured this is the word of God. How can I think anything in it isn’t important or it’s boring? Blessings to you and I pray your Bible reading this coming year will bless you in unexpected and beautiful ways.🙏😊

Whether it is writing an outline or making notes the important aspect is the writing part. I appreciate premade outlines and commentaries, but it becomes rather passive when you read it. Writing (not typing) stuff down has been proven time and again to reinforce the memory into our brain. I've been stressing to people for a number of years now to write, write, write stuff in their Bibles or create a personal notebook. I use digital for a collecting point, but I reference my physical Bibles and notebooks. As for your outlining one thing that something like that does is it helps you to see aspects of the chapters/subjects that a premade outline didn't. Keep up the videos.

What a great idea, Matt! I love outlining when I study a book of my Bible, but this is a wonderful idea to get an overview of the WHOLE Bible. I started my Bible outline book this year along with you. The notebook is large enough that I added 2 pages to the end of each book so I could add notes like key verses, diagrams, other references, etc. This is giving me fresh view of themes from the whole Bible as I study and outline chapter by chapter, but it also builds a useful tool for later study and teaching. Thank you so much for sharing, brother!

I started reading the Bible everyday in 2020 and for the most part I’ve kept it up regularly until 2023, when I did it every day without fail and finished reading a Bible in a year plan a little early. I committed to doing it again starting on January 1st following the chronological Bible Recap plan, but I couldn’t wait so I started it already. I also do some scripture writing and studying books as well. This is an excellent idea and I’m going to seriously consider doing as part of my 2024 Bible study. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏻

This is wonderful. I've been making my own Bible Reading Plans that I follow in the mornings. Yet, I use your "Every Chapter in the Bible" Check Sheet to keep track of my Bible Reading Plan. Currently, I read 5 chapters per day - 3 OT chapters, 1 NT chapter and 1 Psalm/Proverb. When I complete this cycle, I will make a different Bible Reading Plan. Hi Matthew!! I watched your video last night and have to say I´m impressed and you really gave me some inspiration. So, I have been struggling reading the Bible daily. I started theology studies in the Open University of Helsinki a couple of weeks ago so haven´t really had the time to read. Or so I say to myself. But that is an excuse and I really have to correct this.
And about the timeline. I most definitely am going to make that one too!! I am going to start from the New Testament and I will make first a summary of every chapter and after I have finished a book, I will make the same kind of a two page outline as you showed.
I have been studying and reading the Bible for 6 years now and I live for it!! My dream is to become a youth pastor in my later years, I have been retired for 10 years now, I´m 46 years old and have really been doing nothing. Now my life has a purpose, a new beginning.
    Love your videos, blessings, Kirsi

Love your idea! I definitely want to try this out myself, and I think a layout like this would also be very beneficial for the major and minor prophets. It’ll be interesting to see what you do with larger books like Isaiah and Jeremiah, and how they compare to some of the shorter minor prophets like Habakkuk, Micah, or Malachi. I think it is very helpful for those who want to teach verse by verse through the Bible. One day I hope to lead a Bible study over the messages of the minor prophets, and something like this will be very helpful ❤

Thank you Pastor Matthew! I’ve read the Bible through every year for many years now and can finish verses when someone quotes them BUT I can’t remember where it is located most of the time. I think reading can cause your mind to make things run together if you don’t write it down. This sounds helpful for that problem.
I did what MacArthur recommended and read for 30 days straight the first 8 chapters of John and it helped a lot to remember the theme of each chapter. It’s empowering to know where to go when you need to reference something. Blessed New Year to all here on this channel and thread🙏✝️

Great idea, thank you Matthew. I've taken a few ideas from your various videos to strengthen my way of structuring Bible study and, more importantly, to strengthen my soul by way of these disciplines. I have struggled with outlines in the past whether trying to use the Inductive Bible Study by Precept Ministry as others who have posted below. It has been uncomfortable for me to 'compare' my outlines with what the translators of whatever Bible I'm using might outline. At any rate, I'm going to pick up the XXL Moleskine you recommended because I, too, like the concept of viewing the entire Bible book at one glance. An excellent idea.

I struggle with the fact that with so many intelligent, well educated Pastors and Teachers of the Word that there are many schools of thought about Theology from the same Book. I do trust in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior but I have yet to label myself as Reformed or otherwise. I say that not to attempt to criticized anyone's beliefs. Just stating my own lack of conviction to one Theological worldview.

  • @kevinerose

No need to worry about bragging. Bragging is only bad when doing so to people who know you. We are strangers so you are just telling us what you did or do for edification. Bragging is about making yourself look better than those around you. Friends, family, & neighbors can be negatively affected by bragging or have a negative view of you for doing so. Strangers are outside of you circle of influence so would never be affected by bragging.
BTW I have just recently started doing the same thing so this video is good timing for me. Makes me feel like I am on the right track and you are giving me more ideas that I can use with my outlining.
I have lost track of just how many times I have read through the Bible but I'd say it is more than 10. If I were to add to what you say here, it would be for people to first read the Bible through several times. It took me until after the 3rd time reading it in its entirety before I started getting a good feel of the layout of Scripture. Where things are located and how connect and timelines and other things become more clear the more you read. I think that would help in outlining as you would have a better understanding of how to build your outline. For example, I am doing a theme based outline based on God's Salvation Plan only. So I may not include all the details outside of that scope. You may like to do one with the scope of Historical theme or a Prophetic theme.

I agree about the value of outlining, of seeing scripture in its big picture context. Seeing and appreciating the context is so helpful for better understanding. But I disagree about using a manual notebook. Better, IMO, is doing it on a computer document so you can easily revise, update, insert, copy, add to. I use a Google Doc with a Chromebook at my side because it quickly starts up. But you could also use Word doc. I also agree about ESV headings - they are very good, and consistent across ESV editions.

Thank you for your content. For someone who is just beginning serious study of the Word, is it better to go quickly and this get thru the Bible in a year or go in depth and this way slower? Or are there different ways for different purposes?
When I was saved I gorged on the Word, but many things got by me (doctrine of grace). Being in a non denominational church compounded that.
I want to try to do things wisely now 😊

I would spend a focused time on the pentateuch (That's my plan for this year.-I'm a layperson who's taken seminary classes off and on for years.(RTS - some for credit/some audit). I still feel that if I could really get a good foundation through the Torah, the rest will come together organically. Don't forget to get a study bible that includes cultural backgrounds- eg Cultural Background Study Bible or Archeology Study Bible- some of the contributors may be not be believers but you are trying to read the bible (Torah) in ITS cultural context and that's vital to understand how the original hearers would have understood it) Always keep in the New Testament as well but I'm sure you have spent much time in these already. Bless you brother- I've also prayed that the Lord would send someone to really disciple you.

Have you encountered the Companion Bible by E.W. Bullinger? He uses outlines to aid the understanding of the scriptures. While his outlines aren't the same as what you've presented here, I'm sure you you would get some use from them. BTW, your handwriting is a lot better than mine.

Could you go more in to calvanism predestination? I'm really struggling with this as a new Christian. It kind if makes me feel like I have no say in my salvation through christ regardless of my actions. Is this true or am I misunderstanding? Or over analyzing this? It goes against what I understand the concept of christ dieing for my sin is and more like he just died for certain people. Thanks for any input. And I appreciate your work.

    • @JustaSlaveofChrist
      @JustaSlaveofChrist 7 месяцев назад +2

There is a lot in your comments here! I'll do my best to answer them all, starting with the last thing you noted: "It goes against what I understand the concept of Christ dying for my sin is and more like He just died for certain people." As I am sure you already know, John 3:16 teaches that salvation is open to "whosoever believes in Jesus Christ". And this is true. Anyone who chooses to believe in Jesus will be saved. However, when you read John 3:16 in the original koine Greek, it actually reads that Jesus Christ died for "those who are believing on Him." Not whosoever will. If Jesus died for each and every person then we are faced with a dilemma, because not everyone goes to heaven, which means not everyone is saved. So either Christ's death was insufficient to atone for the sins for everyone (which would mean His death us really useless, and He is not the Messiah), or, He simply did not die for every single person. According to Rev.21:27, the only ones who will enter heaven, the only ones who are saved, are those whose name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life; and Rev.13:8 & 17:8 indicate that our names were written there before the foundation of the world! In fact, Ephesians 1:3-6,11-12 specifically states, "He [God the Father] chose us [believers] in Him [Jesus] BEFORE the foundation of the world" (v4). The Apostles goes on to explain that this was done as part of God's "predestining us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will... and according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will." So in answer to what I think is your primary question, yes, God determined who would be saved, and He determined this before the world was even created. Now then, did you have any say in your salvation? Yes, and no. Since God is completely sovereign over all His creation, and works ALL things according to the counsel of His will, it is God who determined that you would be saved. However, God has given you free will, and this is where it gets a little tricky. While you have free will, you do not have the freedom to act outside of your nature. For example, you cannot flap your arms and fly like a bird because even if you want to, unassisted self-flight is not part of your nature. Unfortunately, choosing salvation in Jesus Christ is also not part of your nature. Romans 3:10-18 tells us that no one, not one single person left to themselves will seek God. Why? Because there is not one single righteous person in all the Earth. It's just not in their nature to be righteous. Therefore, God must first regenerate us, which is say, change our nature, so that we will choose Him. And when He changes our nature our eyes are opened to the wonderful gift of His free grace, and it is as irresistible to us as a glass of water is to a man dying of thirst in the desert! We could turn down His grace just as we could turn down that glass of water. But, would we? Never! So you see, the answer to your question is both yes and no. It is God who determines who will be saved, and we have the responsibility to come to Him for salvation. Our coming to Him for salvation really contributes nothing to our salvation, because He doesn't owe us salvation. Salvation is a free gift from God that He offers to us, and enables us to accept that free gift. So ultimately, salvation is all of God, and God alone. That should draw us into a deeper understanding of the grace that God has shown to us, and we should respond with unhesitating love and gratitude for God. He chose us before the foundation of the world, when the only thing we deserved was His wrath. I hope this helps Cliff. God bless you brother!

I appreciate your response above; have been reformed for all but the beginning of my christian life. Have always thought things were very clear once the "lightbulb" went on. Lately I've been struggling because there are a couple of things I still can't get a handle on- I still don't understand how God ( for example when he's speaking with Cain-"Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it') or the Lord when he says to Israel- :"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!" to name a few examples- God is really is speaking as if they could repent. Not trying to be a contrarian- I just don't know how to answer these- maybe you have it clearer in your head? I'd truly appreciate a response-thanks@@JustaSlaveofChrist

@@masterprocrastinator7078 , I tend to look at passages such as these lessons on responsibility. Yes, they actually happened, and in just the way the Bible depicts them. But, they are lessons nonetheless for all who have come after. As you know, Yahweh God is, among other things, our Sovereign Creator and King, and not just for believers, but for everyone. We are all required to obey God. One of the things we are all to obey Him about is to not sin. When God spoke to Cain, He is reminding him of his responsibility to not sin. It’s as simple as that. It is also a lesson for us to not sin. As John Owen put it, “Be killing sin, or sin will be killing you!” Cain did not heed the Lord’s instruction, and look what happened to him. Cast out from the presence of the Lord. The same will happen to all those who embrace sin as Cain did.
With Jesus’ words in Matthew 23:37-38, again the Lord is reminding all of us to not sin. Could they have repented? The opportunity to repent was always there before them, but what does Jesus say? “you were unwilling.” This was a persistent sin among the nation of Israel from the time the Lord took them out of Egypt. They would do well and obey God for a time, then dive headlong into sin. They should have taken heed to what God said to Cain! But they didn’t, and it wasn’t until they realized their sin and turned back to God that He healed them. The Old Testament is replete with these events, and when they were about to crucify Jesus within a weeks time, as He was entering into Jerusalem He gave a one sentence summary of Israel’s history: “Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.” And just as happened every single time Israel did this and was unwilling to repent, Jesus tells them in verse 38, “Behold, your house is being left to you desolate!” Judgment! Again, yes this happened just as Scripture depicts it happening, but it is also a lesson to us to not sin, lest we enter into judgment just as Israel did, and just as Cain did.
This is my understanding of these two passages, and other similar passages, and this is how I have always viewed them. I hope this is helpful. God Bless!
