    I read this book 4 times. Each time it was like a different book.
    At 14 it was an adventure story of a boy my age becoming a fearsome desert warrior chieftain.
    At 20 it was a story of political machinations and insurrection against an established order.
    At 25 it was a story about religions hold on the masses in an effort to control humanity.
    At 35 it was the story of environmentalism and resource extraction by powerful capital.
    Denis necessarily simplified these themes in order to make it approachable and comprehensible to mass audiences. It was a good decision. He will get to make a sequel and will have time to delve deeper now that an appetite has been created for moviegoers.

    Dune is definitely a film that begs to be seen in theaters first, primarily because of the sound design (especially the voice). There's a moment where the sand moves like water, crashing at rocks and I remember my jaw being on the floor. If you're familiar with the book, the pace moves quickly, but holds close to the inspiration. I am hopeful that it, and its second half, will be mentioned in the same breath as LoTR for years to come.

    Dune is one of the most jaw dropping movies I've ever experienced and I've been a movie goer since the late 1960's. Stunning in the way that Alien, Close Encounters, and both Bladerunners were. I understand the appeal of the Star Wars franchise but to me they were always kind of kid stuff. Villeneuve is making sci-fi for adults and it's great that he's getting the world wide acclaim that he so deserves.

    Dune has to be one of the most visually stunning movies I have ever seen. Unfortunately, with Villeneuve being my favorite director, I went into the theater as hyped as I probably never have been before, and thus I feel that my giant anticipation somewhat ruined the watching experience for me. Still, I am quite sure that, upon second viewing, I will come to appreciate Dune more fully for its unrivaled visual artistry, immaculate world building, masterful interweaving of mainstream and arthouse cinema, and its ability to make me crave watching Part Two directly after the already lengthy Part One.

    Visually and aurally excellent, and true to the source material as much as it could be given its time constraints, which I respect. But it lacked a certain human warmth that I was hoping for, having finished my first read of the book this summer. The characters were flatter, both in writing and in depiction. Hiring big-name actors for Duke Leto and Duncan Idaho wasn't a good move, I think -- they didn't do justice to those important characters. And Jessica didn't have the kind of power and presence I expected her to have. The cast of characters felt, in large part, lifeless. A movie can be visually stunning, with amazing sound design, and still leave me checking my watch and groaning internally if the characters aren't portrayed with depth and expression. I wouldn't watch Dune again for that reason.

    • @braveconcepts

      Time constraints??? It was 157 minutes for only HALF the story!!! Stop making excuses for that hack director's FAILURE and inability to TELL A STORY.

    Fantastic movie. As a fellow Canadian, I am super proud of what Denis has done with all of his movies. While it is not perfect (some of the decisions on what to keep and what to leave out of the movie were a little disappointing) as there were a few scenes I was hoping for and some character development that would have enriched the story, I understand that it is a movie that has to appeal to more than just the readers of the book. Can't wait to watch it again.

    This is the one of the first movies I've seen in IMAX where I thought the screen was to small and the sounds too quiet. The movie was very well paced, despite being 2 & half hours. it started casually for the sake of world-building then went into a quick pace that it sustains mostly leaving you breathless till its ending. I listened to the audiobook so I know and understand how some fans gripe about certain events or characters being glossed over, but to be fair, Dune is content meant to be 1 season of a TV series, condensed into 2 feature length films. I think the director chose wisely and I can’t wait to see Part 2.

    Lots of naysayers coming out of the woodwork all saying the same shallow criticisms. “Too long, plain characters, confusing narrative.” My wife has never seen the Lynch version nor read the book(s) and she understood everything perfectly, empathized with a persecuted people, a tragic fall of a family, and a young boy of prophesy potentially destined to be the catalyst of a galaxy spanning war. She got that, and I feel most people easily did as well. If anyone is familiar with Villeneuve’s work, I don’t know how they expected it to be a Spielberg-like sentiment fest. The runtime flew by, the acting was nuanced and amazing. I don’t get any of the detractors’ points, but if they’re willing to unsubscribe over a mere difference of opinion, it just shows their two cents wasn’t worth that much to begin with.

      @@no_mnom of course it had flaws, but no one that I know ever said it was “perfect”. That’s definitely not what Screened is saying either. The point I’m making is there are quite a few people on Dune videos going around calling the film garbage as an incredibly edgy hot-take to counteract the fact that they just didn’t like it that much (which is fine) and it’s getting praised by so many. Its evident in their shallow, broken, repetitive attempts at criticism. It’s strikingly petty. I know someone who disliked Dune for rather genuine reasons, but even they acknowledged it was still a better movie than they had seen in the genre of late. Anyone calling it outright trash is simply bitter or wants attention.

      @@ManSeekingMeaning Shallow attempts at criticism? Now I haven't read what others said about it but don't you think that's asking a little too much? Noone's expected to write a full essay length analysis on youtube comments to get their grievances across of what they didn't like about this movie.
      For the record I found Dune (part 1) to be painfully contrived with an awful, awful movie score and by today's standards a cliched plot without any interesting development or creative storytelling to hold my interest. Sure I've seen worse movies from every decade and on technical level Dune was well put together, but it doesn't diminish the sour taste I had after walking out of the lovely old movie theater I went to see it at with my gf.

    • @nerostark4320
      @nerostark4320 2 года назад +4

      @@Silent_Depths i think that the way people will look at this movie in the next years, will depend when part 2 comes out and if its worth the wait.
      Knowing the story of Dune, i can tell you that it seems at first that its cliche (which is normal, considered that it was written in 1965 and inspired works like Star Wars), but it will get more complex as it goes by.

    • @ManSeekingMeaning
      @ManSeekingMeaning 2 года назад

      @@Silent_Depths The slowburn development (by film standards, at least) of a young and seemingly moral ‘hero’ protagonist discovering he’s been manipulated and primed by forces beyond him - including his mother - to be a chosen one, is instead eager to avoid that path and responsibility of leadership altogether, only to (by films end) willingly start down that path - a path that leads to the ultimate ruin and death of millions of lives because he simply wants revenge for a murdered family and a betrayed people… that’s not compelling? That’s contrived? Truly? Name something similar and in such scale that has been in pop culture from the past decade; a messianic figure that’s actually the long-term villain of an entire imperium. I can think of just one example that’s mainstream, and beyond also being from the last generation, Anakin Skywalker wishes he had a transformation as organic and believable as Paul’s.
      I can see your point about the film score even if I rather liked it, and the pacing was definitely not for everyone. I even criticize some of the cosmetic choices of the film and the fight choreography. But we’re just not going to see eye to eye on anything regarding the overall presentation or the narrative or how it was handled. Thanks for writing your thoughts, though. My gripe is clearly with people copy+pasting the same sentence or two without actually specifying what they disliked because they likely don’t even know.

    I feel like this is the closest film to truly represent what Dune looks like in my head. The immersion of the Lynch film and the miniseries was often broken by terrible effects or unrealistic acting choices, but this film kept a consistent tone of wonderous and threatening all the way through, which is exactly how I feel when I read the Dune novels. Also, I felt like this was the first time the minutia of the books was truly represented, with things like the Atreides battle language making an appearance. I could just read so much meaning into every glance and flicker of movement, and I just love that.

    Visually stunning and well paced but emotionally mute. Actor's played the moments just fine, but we were seeing emotion rather than feeling it. The most emotive person in the whole cast ends up being Jason Momoa. I can't imagine it entering pop culture the way LOTR because of this. LOTR, and even Star Wars to a lesser degree, is much more emotionally rich.
    It's a criticism many people tacked onto Blade Runner 2049, a movie I was much more fond of, and while I don't fully disagree I do feel it had more emotional resonance thanks largely to Gosling.
    What I hate about giving this criticism is that it seems strange considering this is the guy behind Arrival and Prisoners--both just packed to the brim with emotion. Arrival, like Dune, feels a little more sterile in presentation and yet still knew how to get to your heart.
    Overall, I thought Dune was great. The characterizations somehow managed to be clear and strong even without eliciting any real emotional response. Visually, again, fantastic. Score...kind of a cut and paste for Zimmer, if we're being honest.
    With talk of centering Zendaya's character more in the next chapter, this presents a great opportunity to enhance the story in a way other adaptations have failed. In the past, it feels as if creators have tried to make a superhero of Paul, but that's not the point of the text. Seeing Denis's version, specifically with Zendaya, acknowledge the oppressor angle is a great step in fleshing out Herbert's intentions with this story. Because no matter how benevolent Paul is, his coming to power ultimately spells the end of many Fremen traditions even if it does save their lives. Something often overlooked but a pretty important subtext of the series.

      Dune: Part One has a begining, middle and end. It follows the character arc of Paul Atreides from a child resenting his gifts, to a reluctant young man unsure of his future, to heir-apparent choosing a path into the sands.
      There's a political story, too - the political maneuvering on a cosmic scale which builds with patient slowness until critical mass is reached, and everything changes in minutes. But the heart of the story is Paul's always-inevitable journey into the desert.

The only thing close to a turning point for him was the "final battle' is the end with a random character, and the fact that Paul hasn't killed anyone doesn't make any meaningful impact and I'm not even sure it should (why mention it if it's not important? if it IS important, why not mention it before?) I'm sure it makes a lot more sense to people who've read the book, but I believe that movies should be enjoyed without an assigned reading. But as the Reverend Mother discovers at the start of the movie, his dreams are not perfect visions of the future - they are in conflict - some come to pass and other don't - and it's his fight with Jamis where he realizes why - he has a gift of sight, but a unique ability to shape what he sees.
      Honestly, it sounds like you're looking for something to complain about. You're complaining that the story has NOT mentioned that a teenage kid has NOT killed anyone before, but the point of the scene is whether or not Paul will take a life, and what the cost of that will be.

    its not a good movie stap prasing it, Villeneuve is no the mesiah...
    he failed to explain the world/universe, and the major factions of how humanity got to this point... someone who has no previous knowledge of the universe won't get a thing...
    also where was the great galactic empire? it felt so small and inclosed i bet they will fail to show the jihad in the next movie?

    Aside from some silly plot issues that aren't even that big a deal (except one), this movie looked great and sounded even greater. It was a great ride and I'm looking forward to the next one.

    I feel like the best desert movie is still Mad Max 2015. Particularly if you compare the two sandstorm scenes.
    Dune is definitely the best picture of the year, but it left me hollow and disappointed, especially the "it's only the beginning" part at the end, soured the whole experience.

    The visuals were great, but I could not convince myself to care about the characters who mostly felt shallow and straight forward. Even the action was slow paced and I could not figure out the rules for the shields. They stop fast things, but not slow, except if you're fighting and then it's like they're not there at all.

    dune 2021 was really pretty, it felt like the movie was trying to be its own prequal and sequel at the same time. tried to do too much, even though it was roughly 150 minutes long

    I can't wait to enjoy having learned my lesson and just watch it at home where I can enjoy the great audio without having some drunk in the mixing booth slamming the levels back and forth between max and off

    I'm sorry, but Dune was so boring. Felt like a chore to sit through. Visuals shouldn't be the standard for a great film.

      It's a common feeling with Denis villenueve's films honestly. His other films are very much like this, if you're not into one of them, you're probably not going to like his directing style.

    The casting and overall take of the plot is so generic and uninspired it felt like Hollywoodian trash. The music is as dry as it gets too with it SWEATING to stand out at any time, often feeling like it's almost the same track throughout the entire movie almost.

    greatest disappointment of the year. i had high hopes on it but its lame cgi, poor dialogues, boring characters left me quite frustrated. the only things i feel like saying praise to seem to be written in the book, so it is the writer’s reward

    • @ManSeekingMeaning

      Pray tell, what exactly is “poor dialogues”? Are you saying that the dialogue from the film was poor? The film that took quite a few things verbatim from the same book you’re in turn praising? Criticizing the characters, okay. You mean the same characters adapted - by the consensus of the majority of fans - rather well from the source material? And the CGI that visually groundbreaking auteurs like Christopher Nolan have praised Villeneuve’s and team on? I’m… baffled by this comment.

      It's film not a movie. Films are experiences that demand your attention to sink into it's world and story. While movies are just slide shows you can pay attention to but are made to just lift your mood.

    Unsubscribed. You lost all my respect, the movie has nice visuals and good sound design, but it is very boring. The script is bad and fails to entertain. I just can't understand why you say it's good.

    • @bruhder5854
      @bruhder5854 2 года назад +3

      You lost me when you said entertain. Movies are made to entertain, not films. Films are made as experiences that immerse you in its story and world. It inspires other films, games and media.
      "The road" for instance is a film that's in no way entertaining. It's completely depressing yet its largely helmed by many directors, writers, artists, etc as a masterpiece.
      Dune, being the grand father of all modern si-fi is another one of those and this film captured most of how the book was really well.

      @@bruhder5854 Ok, you have a point. But if a motion picture (movie or film) can't keep me hooked at least most of the time, then it's not a good motion picture.
      The time I invest in seeing what you did has to be valued, and if it bores me then it fails at the basics.
