What were your favorite movies of 2021?
Here is a list we made on Letterboxd: boxd.it/dXub0
The French Dispatch and Dune.
Nobody, Dune, The Suicide Squad and Dont Look Up. (edit) adding Sing 2 as well, i just love those movies.
I'm not a movie person, I personally prefer episodic series as they feel more well paced and adapted.
However, even if it doesn't count, Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway was a visually and aesthetically incredible movie, one that tells the story of a leader of an insurgency trying to carry out an assassination plot, without killing anyone he aims to, and throughout he sees the views of those he aimed to inspire, planting the seeds of doubt in his mind as he ponders if the image of the future he wants is truly what the people want.
It's an animated film as to me personally, live action movies are fundamentally flawed in their visual and story telling aspect without large aid from CG and 'fix it in post' edits that are meant to allow live action to match 2D animation. There are obvious exceptions, but as the years go on the exceptions get fewer and fewer
I really dug several foreign language films, including The Hand of God, Titane and the vastly underrated Benedetta. However, my new favorite coming of age film is also my pick for best of 2021: Licorice Pizza.
I loved The French Dispatch but thought throughout that Wes Anderson was definitely channeling his 'inner Jodorowsky'! Which when you prefer the 'artistic' slant to what goes on the screen is no bad thing!
As for Dune that long run-time felt afterwards like 10 incredibly immersive and sumptuous minutes! As a fan of the book [first read in 1978 and re-read at least 15 times since] I could not believe how accurate and faithful the film stayed, plus the visuals were stunning, the artistic design was quite incredible.
Watching Dune in the cinema was one of my favourite theatrical experiences. I felt every gust of wind and the vibration of the spaceships. Just an outstanding piece of work
After watching Dune I thought to myself I cant wait to watch it again.
I cheered when I saw Dune as your favourite movie of the year. It is definitely mine . Editing, cinematography, acting and the soundtrack is perfect. As a Dune reader I also think the adaptation aspect is as successful as it can be.
Nope. Watching movies by myself is infinitely better than watching in a theatre. I'm free to express myself without wondering if I'm disturbing someone or embarrassing myself. I'm free to pause to take a piss or get more snacks. I'm free to rewind and rewatch in order to fully grasp something I think I missed. Sometimes I pause for days in order to collect myself or think through what I've seen so far.
YES
What movie made you pause for days and required self reflection?
@@Spiqaro Midsommar was the most recent.
@@TheLaughingOut If you like weird/scary movies, you should watch:
1. Naked Lunch
2. Mother!
3. Eraserhead
4. Enemy
5. I'm Thinking of Ending Things
6. The Empty Man
7. A Clockwork Orange
8. Meet the Feebles
9. In the Mouth of Madness
10. The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover
The Hand of God is sensational, great pick from Italy.
I like how they person who wrote Spiderman didn't even articuate his decision
An excellent list! I really enjoyed Riders of Justice. The amalgamation of genres can feel dissonant at first but really finds its place to be a well crafted story after the initial whiplash
Much appreciated 👍
Really great list thank you, I appreciate hearing about films outside the anglosphere which I don't hear much about!
I would say The Green Knight is definitely in my top 10 though. Dev Patel is such a national treasure in Britain and its great to see him getting bigger roles. The script is genuinely so original and every shot looks like a painting. Plus the film is a masterclass in how to use digital effects to enhance fantasy without losing the realism. I thought it was great! :)
Wheel Of Fortune & Fantasy (2021) from the director of "Drive My Car" coming out this year as well. Although the visual is less cinematic, but the narrative is on par with Drive My Car, giving out an indescribable feeling of wholesomeness
I was not able to see that one but it looked very interesting 👍
yes this!! Wheel of Fortune & Fantasy made it onto my Top 10 of 2021!
Yeah, watching Dune at the cinema was a great experience, waiting for the sequel.
The scenes with the voice, oh my god!
I agree
As someone who’s not the biggest Nic Cage fan, I really loved Pig. It was such an odd, surreal and emotional movie. I actually got a little teary eyed toward the end.
I also loved Titane. It went from being disturbing to being oddly wholesome.
Tick Tick Boom was a pleasant surprise for me. I wasn’t excited about it because I wasn’t sure Lin Manuel Miranda would be a good director, I was over big actors getting cast in musicals, and I hate Rent so had no stake in this semi-biographical musical about the creator. But it was so good on all fronts.
Looking forward to these recommendations! Thank you!
Finally came up with a awesome video after one long month 😄👍🏻
Great list Dune and Pig were my favorites from this year as well
Amazing list! And so glad Pig made it, the restaurant scene is just stunning
Great list and commentary - Thank you! I only wish I could watch these films with friends and family.
Your channel is such a gem
Another year another Screened best of. Been keeping my eye out for this video the past couple weeks, some of the best movies I've ever watched is because of this channel. Ive even watched and gotten into some foreign films because of you. Keep it up.
Thank you and glad to hear that. That's why we do it!
Me too
@@Screened Is there "The best movies of 2022" coming out? Always like to hear your thoughts on the best movies of the past year.
Excellent choices.
Fantastic video, Dune is also my favourite of the year. It's pure cinematic transportation.
Waiting for it thank you 💓
Enjoy the list👍
I swear all these online lists overlap
glad to see a couple on here i haven't heard of yet
but I'm surprised none of the lists I've seen have mentioned
Prayers for the Stolen by Tatiana Huezo or Blue Bayou by Justin Chon
They are my two favorite movies of the year and are being completely overlooked
Good to see Scandinavian films in your list. To may they are the best.
No Licorice Pizza in the list?
I have not seen that one. The theaters closed down before I could.
Early bird c:
I haven't seen a single movie in two weeks, and now I have a pretty good list. I better get going.
Thx
Enjoy 👍
I knew from the beginning dune was gonna be number 1, I can't wait for part 2
What movie is at 0:05? It looks super interesting!
Unfortunately, about half of these films will never get wide release. So, instead of seeing them on the big screen (or what passes for "big screens" nowadays), we'll be forced to stream these movies on TV's. Not the same. At all. But better than nothing.
Great list!! Definitely some similarities to mine, however my favorite film of the year has to be “A Hero” directed by Asghar Farhadi. Naturalistic and reserved yet ten tense and morally ambiguous. Truly captures the contradictions of the human condition like no other film I’ve seen. In this story no one is truly to blame yet by the end no one is left unscathed.
Great video! Might be my favorite 2021 movie top I've seen so far.
Here's my top 10: ruclips.net/video/VSfszYhf8BA/видео.html
#1: French Dispatch
#2: Dune
#3: Annette
I've watched the green knight quite a few times and even read the original Tolkien translation too. Probably one of the most personally impactful movies I've ever seen.
The French Dispatch was also extremely enjoyable, I didn't think I would enjoy it more than the Grand Budapest Hotel; very happy to be proven wrong.
I really miss „The Summit of Gods“, I know it is not widely known, but I still believe it is one of the best this year.
totally agree!
And Golden globe did not even nominated this film for the best animated feature film.
Great list! I would add "Compartment no:6" and "Fabian:Going to the Dogs" as my favorites🧡
Compared to last year I've seen a lot less of your list but it's nice to see your recommendations
Thanks for the least, I susually like the movie you liked ! (exception for The Strangers that I kind of hated)
I hope DUNE 2 will be more emotionnal, it's the only thing I hoped for PART 1 but didn't had... But I'm willing to read the book soon so I will have all background lore to better appreciate his movie, i guess. :)
Great selection (maybe I disagree with Dune in first place), but man... 2021 was a very good year for cinema. Here are more films that i loved from this year:
-Sin señas particulares, de Fernanda Valadez.
-Noche de fuego, de Tatiana Huezo.
-Una película de policías, de Alonso Ruizpalacios.
-Lamb, de Valdimar Jóhannsson.
-Madres paralelas, de Pedro Almodóvar.
-The last duel, de Ridley Scott.
-Shiva baby, de Emma Seligman.
-Memoria, de Apichatpong Weerasetakul.
-Mad God, de Phil Tippett.
-Petite maman, de Céline Sciamma.
-Los Mitchells vs Las Máquinas, de Michael Rianda.
-Inside, de Bo Burnham.
-The card counter, de Paul Schader
-Wrath of man, de Guy Ritchie.
-Censor, de Prano Bailey-Bond.
-Evangelion 3.0+1.0 (this is a personal one, it´s not the best, but it was special for me as a fan).
And maybe not from past year, but they came to México in 2021:
-Los lobos, de Samuel Kishi
-La llorona, de Jayro Bustamante.
-Lux AEterna, de Gaspar Noé.
-Saint Maud, de Rose Glass.
Days, de Tsai Ming-liang
I hope to see soon Licorice pizza, The tragedy of Macbeth, Nightmare alley and Belle. And i think the honorable mentions deserved to be in the top. xD The power of the dog, Annette and The green knight are veeeery good. Specially The green knight.
Good choices 👍
Best list I've seen this year
Do you guys not do analysis videos anymore?
Well I recently got a full time job so now things are a bit different time wise. Hopefully in the near future we will able to get back to a regular schedule.
The Voyeurs a bit in the R-rated but damn, it strikes hard...specially in themes of privacy and self identity.
Anyone know where the shot at 00:05 is from?
It's from The Green Knight.
@@Screened ❤
Sardar udham and the last duel are 2 films I'd recommend you guys look into. I will say though, that it's best to watch them without any research, especially the last duel as its hands down the best film Ridley Scott has made since The Martian.
Have you seen Red Rocket?
I have not seen that one yet but it looks good.
I watched Dune at the cinema and I don't really get all the hype.
I think it depends on whether you like such movies or read the book.
Riders of Justice is my personnal favourite this year, this movie is really powerful.
Second and third respectively : Yakuza to Kazoku, about the end of the yakuza figure as we know it, and Onoda, about an unbelievable true war story.
This is the video I enjoyed the most on RUclips about top movies of the year. I like the analysis that you do for each movie that are on your list. Keep up the good work !
My list for this year :
The Power of the Dog
Dune
The Green Knight
There is still some that I need to watch
Much appreciated 👍
not much of a year...I would probably put Censor as my film of the year although it had a few issues. And while I love Denis, I think his earlier movies are so much better.
It's. Not. A. Remake. (West Side Story)
The Last Duel overlooked again.
Yeah sorry it didn't get in the video but it would be in our top 20 of the year.
Very nice list, except for West side story... A remake which can only live in the shadow of the original!!! (You should've gone with Annette for a musical pick). Thanx!!!
The Power of the Dog is so underrated. I loved it and it's def. in my Top 10 of 2021.
Thanks, there are some movies I haven't heard of yet that sounds interesting!
Honestly you should look up the 1976 film The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea. Power of the Dog is basically a re-make. Exactly the same film but with added 'cowboys'. BUT the Sailor Who Fell...' is very much more powerful. Largely forgotten but to my mind a far better telling of the story.
sardar udham?
But where the fuck can i watch them. Like.. Netflix has 5 films over there, hulu has 10 films over here but you cant watch because IM IN THE WRONG COUNTRY. And evry where else ita illegal so where the fuck....
Recommendations are alright i guess but the order sucks and holy hell yall dropped the ball with that number 1 pick
Lol, Dune
I can’t with these Yanks
love the channel, however, all of this movies except for the green knight are about sad white people, could you make a list of movies outside this typology?
Dune was awesome.
The rest is frou-frou arthouse crap.
Oh come on, be mindful. You have insulted great films so carelessly. Making arthouse films is hard since the profit motive and the production is high. Also, Dune is a mainstream arthouse film. I am happy that you enjoyed the film. I watched it and didn't feel a strong "wow". The politics of Dune and the visuals are so fun to sit through, the characters can feel a bit detached from normal human beings despite this, the reasoning is outlined and you can feel sad for Paul's circumstances. I am a Villeneuve fan. He is great and he commits to his vision. I admire him for that. Personally, the reaction is over done and I think it's because of the pandemic. I really wanted to love the film but it's ok.
@@Mrchair-bk5ns I liked The Last Duel too, sad it wasnt on the list. Ridley Scott and Villeneuve are my favourite directors. I didn't care for Wes Andersons vignettes, but at least there were no Marvel films on the list. I feel like these RUclips film channels go out of their way to find obscure or foreign films to recommend in order to be different rather than just celebrate cinematic goodness. While I appreciate the exposure to films I haven't heard of, sometimes it's nice to sit around and talk about the merits of vanilla ice cream.
dune is mediocre at best.
Dune and NWH were fucking garbage carried by its high profile.
The only "good" thing about Dune is that they took the concept art and put it on screen because the cinematography past these specific shots was pitiful at best. Wow, so impressive! Besides that, the only reason Dune wasnt as bad as NWH is because it gets carried HARD by its source material because the acting and delivery of what was supposed to be the SEVERAL important moments of the movie were so bland and unimpactful it felt like I had taken an adderall smoothie before going in. Soundtrack was also SHIT unless you have never heard the concept of "BUÓÓÓÓÓÓÓNNNN" every time a character looks at something large before.
NWH tho... Man, if you take the artificial hype and absolute NASTY amount of fanservice out, it's a movie so bad it doesnt get more than a 6 if you catch it halfway through on a backwater TV channel while you're bored out of your mind 6 years after it originally came out. NWH was like a cake but there was no cake, it was just icing, but not good icing either, just the WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too sweat type that leaves you so tired of it you can't take a third bite.
The fact that Dune and NWH made top 100 in IMDB just shows why cinema is so garbage today. Any ignorant will take cheap fanservice and artificial hype and reward the ones responsible for it even though nobody's gonna even wanna remember these dog shit movies barely half a decade from now.
You've got the Internet. You've got Surfshark. But still you missed another year (probably the best year) of Malayalam cinema. SHAME.
Probably 2022 is the year when you finally catch up to what's been going on in South India.
