If you want to win the lottery, first you need to buy a ticket.
"What did he look like?"
"Well... kind of plain."
"In what way?"
"Just... ordinary." - Memories of Murder
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die." - Blade Runner
MOHHHHHHTOO PANEKEEKKKKKKKKUU - Inherent Vice
@@DJ-3maj Bro I was just watching that like rn! Really want to see it
I had no idea that this was my favorite genre until I saw all my favorite movies here
I was thinking the exact thing, I'm quite drawn to these types of movies.
Same!
same
Now Try surrealism movies
Exactly❤
I love how you guys give recommendations and synopses without spoiling anything
Thank you 👍
U took my comment.
Under The Silver Lake blew my mind when I saw it. I can't believe it's not more talked about. It has that surreal David Lynch feel but also something completely new and intriguing.
Video Idea: Slow burn movies that you will love.
Burning (2018 )!

@@goosebumpsemiliano9104 absolutely love that one
Yes Yes Yes. I want this one
I'm glad you included 'Dark City'. It's one of my all-time favorite 'blended' genre films. Very neo-noir, but also speculative and cosmic. All the films you listed are terrific - thanks!
Honestly there were things that Dark City did that I preferred over the Matrix. They both share strong similarities, but Dark City was a much more artistic package.
@@bamb0ostick I completely agree. I know the Matrix got all the love and attention - and it was fine, truly - but I felt 'Dark City' was the better film. It did have an aesthetic that was utterly unique, a more interesting story (at least, in my opinion) and lead character (again; just my opinion). :)
It felt more like a mess to me. It tried to be everything and then ended up being almost nothing of substance. But this is just a personal opinion, so I may be wrong.
@@angelkalathas I can respect your answer. 'Dark City' just didn't do it for you - and that's alright. I liked it better than I did 'The Matrix', but art is always going to be subjective. :)
Sin City is the movie that introduced me the noir genre when I was about 13
Still one of my favorite
Noir means a black film and people assume that means black and white. Movies that are noir and colour would be the likes of Vertigo and Rear Window or the movie Rope and they are all in color.
I seen Vertigo in a 70mm cinema and that means the resolution is 18k.
@@bighands69 Sin city is one whole big tribute to noir fiction. You probably don't know it at all, its comic book source neither.
@@bighands69 Are you saying Sin City isn't a noir film?
I really love the Magicians speech at Club Silencio in Mulholland Drive. That scene really helped me appreciate and think more about the importance of sound in movies.
Mulholland drive is just weird nonsense.
@@bighands69 it might seem so at face value, but it's really not. I suggest watching an "explanation" video
Nightcrawler is such a good film...
One of my favorite lesser known neo noir (and horror) films is 1987's, Angel Heart. It is the perfect blend of mystery, suspense and stomach punching terror!
SPOILERS BELOW!
I think my favorite line is at the end of the film when a detective tells the 'hero', Harry Angel that he's "Gonna burn for this!". Only for Harry to soberly reply, "Yeah. In Hell."
That was a great review.
Just enough to get someone intrigued to watch the film, but not to spoil anything
I am definitely going to check out more of your films. Also, a buddy of mine loves noir and mystery films so he would definitely like your channel.
You're welcome, and glad I could help.
South Korea has been pumping out the best Neo Noirs in the last 20 years as well. Bong Joon Ho's "Mother" and Park Chan Wook's "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" are two of my favorite movies of all time.
my favorite memories of murder, burning, the wailing, oldboy, no mercy, helpless...
brick is such an underrated movie. what i find most fascinating about the film is that it feels like it could be set anywhere because the premise could happen anywhere. plus the twist at the end of the movie was so good that it was almost underwhelming. it was just so fitting for the setting.
It was rubbish to be honest.
It was a great movie. Problem is, people took it too literal and had a problem with how the kids spoke. So many people have zero imagination.
@@bighands69good to see your post. I’ve read so many good things about this film and can’t get past 10 minutes.
Memento as a truly amazing film. The delivery of the story in a way that matches the viewer's experience with the main character's experience, putting you in his shoes, is completely flawless. I've watched this movie many times, and there are no plot holes or inconsistencies of any kind. The delivery is perfect. As creative and original as a concept is, there are 1000 ways the execution could have faltered. Do not miss this film.
Speaking of Nolan and Neo-noirs: "Now you're looking for the secret... but you won't find it, because of course you're not really looking. You don't really want to know. You want to be fooled. But you wouldn't clap yet. Because making something disappear isn't enough; you have to bring it back. That's why every magic trick has a third act, the hardest part, the part we call "The Prestige".""
you should watch his no budget first film "Following"
Memento is one of my favourite movies.
I cant believe nolan made one of the best neo noir movie.
There is one problem with "Memento": Leonard knows he has a condition but shouldn't. He can't make new memories after he got hit on the head so how can he know that he has the condition? He knows what the condition is because of Sammy Jenkis but he wouldn't know that he has it because he wouldn't remember anyone telling him that he has it.
@@HarryBuddhaPalm But he made up the Sammy Jenkins character who never actually existed.
All of Sammy's experiences are his experiences itself.
He made up Sammy cus he coudnt cope the fact that he killed his wife.
The Chaser is one of the most riveting, suspenseful and well-realised South Korean films ever.
Now I now what my fav genre of film is.
Or what my mum likes to call it “depressing and dark films”
This is also my favorite genre and everytime I watch a movie with my mom she tells me to choose a movie that's not depressing so I feel you sis
What people really want is a mystery movie. It does not have to be dark to be great. The Lincoln lawyer is a fantastic movie in that mould.
Where Eagles Dare is a great war movie that is also a mystery movie in the mould of a noir film.
@@kenny4957 I mean I always called it mystery, psychological, thriller. Just didn’t have an exact name for it 😂
@@bighands69 Neo-Noir is not completely mystery though. Even movies on the list like Nightcrawler and Drive don't really have a question at hand at the center of the story. Nightcrawler more-so than Drive.
You really should listen post punk music
Brick is one of my all time favorite movies!
You've missed "No Country for Old Men" and "Collateral", which in my opinion - besides Blade Runner 2049 - are one of the finest Neo noir movies of the 2000s
Forgotten, Memories of a Murderer, Prisoners, Shutter Island, The Guilty, Cruising, Under the Silver Lake, Inherent Vice, Locke, Blue Ruin, I Saw the Devil, The Chase,
Good list. I love Blue Ruin
Under the Silver Lake is one of the most boring neo-noirs I have ever watched. I became completely disinterested in the story after 30 minutes and the ending had me regretting having ever watched the movie.
@@daudimasinde6280Under the Silver Lake was a great cinematic experience for me, reminiscent of Lynch, Chandler, Hamett, Simenon, Bunuel, Jodorowsky, Cronenberg et al... maybe it went above ur head, that's y u hated it
A shit movie proven by cinema sales, imdb, rotten tomatoes and metacritic. The trifecta. Dumbest movie ending I ever saw. Thank goodness most critics/viewers so it for what it was.
@@daudimasinde6280 Ticket sales and critics' review really don't make a movie good or bad.. Under the Silver Lake has all the traits of a cult classics.. Many cult classics have been box office failures and gotten a bad rep from critics..
Oh man nocturnal animals was really good it definitely made me feel .. hard to describe
This is one of my favorite channels on RUclips, you don't just talk about how bad pop culture movies are, you talk about the philosophy of movies and why we might want to check them out which is very appreciated. I have gone and watched many because of this page, like the newest blade runner and it became my favorite of the genre though I still haven't seen many others in this genre
I really enjoyed how you featured the viewers comments, that’s an excellent way to keep us engaged in film discussions!
As always, great job, boys!
Thank you 👍
I love them all. Also, i recommend Under the silver like (modern Blue velvet), You were never really here (Taxi driver vibes), Thief and Heat by Michael Mann (also Collateral), Locke (with a great Tom Hardy), Insomnia, Zodiac, the crazy Inherent vice, The usual suspects, We own the night, The yards, Little Odessa, Mystic river, The departed, Lost highway and a personal one favorite: A scanner darkly.
Also watch Infernal Affairs, the original Korean movies Departed is based on. Bound is a great lesbian noir from the Wachowskis if ppl need some more female lead movies
Under the silver lake is one of my favourites! It fucked my mind lmfao. It's so good I never watched it again...it's one of those movies. Don't wanna ruin the fun by rewatching it.
Brick is hidden gem, great one...nocturnal animals and nightcrawler is along with Jake's top work...you should include PRISONER, great fucking masterpiece...
Prisoners is definitely a masterpiece.
Anything Villeneuve does 👌 top notch
There are some great selections on this list, but I'd argue that BLOOD SIMPLE should be near the top of any list of neo noir films.
“Michael Clayton” is a great thriller / noir in my opinion.
Enemy as well as Prisoners both starring Jake Gyllenahall are both amazing movies in this genre as well
And Zodiac 👍
Thanks for so many recommendations.Gonna watch Nocturnal Animals tonight and Memento tomorrow.
what a great video, please keep making more like this. it's a great format
EXCELLENT list and great suggestions by the audience as well ; kudos all around
A highly underrated neo-noir modern film for me is Under the Silver Lake, Andrew Garfield's performance was just incredible
Also one of my favorites the last couple of years.

I haven't seen anyone else talk about it, so I thought I'd mention one of my favourite Neo-Noir films: Upgrade (2018).
It's super atmospheric and it's directed my one of my all time favourite directors, Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man). It's an incredible revenge story and it's plot is just so engaging the entire way through. It's a great Sci-fi and Tech-Noir film as well and I'd highly recommend giving it a watch. This film gets nowhere near as much recognition as it deserves.
Awesome video! Glad to know other people love Dark City, one of my favorite movies of all time
Great selection! I'm always happy to find some "new" stuff to watch and there are some films, I haven't watched or even heard of before!
"El Secreto de sus Ojos" is a marvellous film from Argentina. A retired detective is still haunted by an old unsolved case and decides to write a book about it to have at least some closure. The whole movie has the feeling of a novel and you get quite often glimpses of magic realism. It's a must-see for everyone and the end will stick with you forever.
Listen to me. Ive watched hundreds of movies in my lifetime. El secreto de sus ojos top 5 for me. Beautiful film and really well acted. The ending....my jaw literally dropped in shock for like 2 mins. I did not see that coming. Incredibly emotional and shocking. Its extremely rare forna film to perpetuate feelings of shock. No wonder it was given a high 8.2IMDB rating and is considered Top 100 greatest films of all time
The Kid Detective getting the recognition it deserves!!
Marshlands is a great Spanish detective movie very much in the True Detective noir-ish mould. Would highly recommend.
It's pretty wild how a large amount of these movies listed (as well as several other works within the genre) are set in Los Angeles. As a native of the city, it makes perfect sense. You definitely get that "noir-esque" feeling driving around at night. It's like an endless dark abyss with occasional pretty lights. Beautiful yet unsettling & unnerving at the same time.
Fantastic, thanks. There are a few films here that I’ve never seen; can’t wait to check them out.
Absolutely LOVE Blade Runner, Nightcrawler, and Nocturnal Animals. Will definitely need to check out these other films.
Note pad keeps getting longer and longer
Awesome video as always !!!!!
Yes! All terrific choices. Need to rewatch some of these 👏
"Point Blank" (1967) and "Hickey And Boggs"(1972) are worthy entries to the genre.
"Devil In A Blue Dress" (1995) is an overlooked gem.
@The Noir Channel There is a great quote in "Hickey And Boggs",
after a violent shootout, one says to the other:-"Nobody came."
The other replies:- "Nobody cares." Glad you agree.
I always forget how amazing of a movie Seven really is
Masterpiece of a movie!
Good list bro thank you for putting some that arent on every other list 👌
lucky number slevin, i love that u have brick in ur list
I already saw almost half of the movies mentioned. I will add the rest to my watch-list. Thank you !
I have no idea there was a proper term for this kind of film genre.
"This movie is not for everyone. This is a David Lynch film."
That perfectly encapsulates every (almost) Lynch movie ;)
I for one appreciate him, it's nice that some people are a bit out there :)
Absolutely loved the list
I didn't know what neo noir was or how much I love neo noir until I saw this video and realized I love almost all of these movies. Definitely writing down the rest to watch later!
Enjoy 👍
Two William Friedkin movies that I think are good examples of Neo Noir are To Live and Die in L.A. and Killer Joe. To Live and Die in L.A. features an excellent performance by a young William Dafoe as the bad guy and has one of the best car chase scenes of the 80s. Killer Joe has one of the craziest Matthew McConauhey performances and has one of the creepiest family dynamics I've seen in an American film.
To Live and Die in L.A. is a good one.
Killer Joe is fantastic as well.
Cruising i think also qualifies as neo-noir.
really excellent list, and there's a couple new ones I'll def go check out
I feel like ‘Strange Days’ should be getting some love.
Strange Days, Old Boy (Korean version), Donnie Darko, Premonition, Brazil (monty python group from the 80s). Depending on how your bent there are a lot of movies missing from the list.
@@FerrisSOCAL All great films there!
glad that "the kid detective' is on on your list.... it's definitely way out of the radar for film buffs .... it was surprisingly good!
Great list, fellas. Always knocking it out of the park--and appreciate the featured quote! Hope I can squeeze some more gems out of this lil pea brain for you in the future ;-P
Couple quotes I really dig here. One being from a movie oft left out of conversations about neo-noir and/or revenge cinema: Ghost Dog.
Ghost Dog says, " There is surely nothing other than the single purpose of the moment. A man's whole life is a succession of moment after moment. If one fully understands the present moment, there is nothing left to do, and nothing else to pursue."
What I love about this is how it's not only a true statement as it pertains to life, but one which applies to nearly every noir movie on the market. Men questioning or pursuing meaning from life on a macro scale rather than truly looking at the details of each moment. Many times left unsaid, this ends up being how so many noir protagonists crack the case. Always be present and you'll never miss that which is hiding underneath your nose.
The other, and one which is quite long and credited to Cormac McCarthy rather than the Coens, is the Ed Tom Bell narration of No Country For Old Men.
Ed Tom Bell says, "The crime you see now, it's hard to even take its measure. It's not that I'm afraid of it. I always knew you had to be willing to die to even do this job. But, I don't want to push my chips forward and go out and meet something I don't understand. A man would have to put his soul at hazard. He'd have to say, 'O.K., I'll be part of this world.' "
This really just fuels the notion that it's dangerous business walking out your front door. There's a bravery in simply confronting everyday life that we often take for granted. We don't consider it, but there are so many people who are at home frozen with fear day in and day out. It isn't that their perspective of the world is wrong, but that their knowledge of the world is too great to allow them to exist within it in peace. So it begs the question....Is ignorance *really* bliss after all?
Also, just watched Kid Detective last night--WOW! Glad to see you guys giving it some much deserved shine.
_Ghost dog_ is such a cool and quotable film.
The best movie channel on RUclips!
Much appreciated 👍
Damn good list, well done!
Great list, some of my favorites and a few I definitely need to watch.
I would add.... Wind River and Prisoners. Love them both.
I have seen Bladerunner 2049 3-4 times, and I am equally amazed each time. That movie is a work of art.
_The Kid Detective_ has been on my watchlist for days now. Your video makes me wanna watch this as soon as possible.

L.A Confidential is my favorite movie of all time!
That was a fantastic movie from the 1990s. It is in the same era as Pulp fiction and The negotiator ( more action orientated).

Oh I love this and would love to get recommendations for other genres as well!
Amazing list of brilliant films! Thanks also for not spoiling some highly complicated film plots too :-)
Damn this video nailed all the best ones. I was hoping there was something I hadn't seen yet.
I had no idea that I'm into this genre, I watched L.A. Confidential, Memento when it first came out back in the day when I was in high school, that ending in Nocturnal Animals has stayed with me for a week, I love this movie so much 🙏🏻💛, oh yeah I like Drive too!
Screened’s FILM CLUB rocks!
Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners is one of the best neo-noirs that I can think of. It is a police thriller incredibly well written and directed, immersive as hell, full of twists and morally questionable actions from the main characters. The cast is great, the score is ominous and intriguing, the cinematography is haunting beautiful... Damn, I really love this movie.
Other great options are the first Jack Reacher film, Lincoln Lawyer, Seven, Mystic River, No country for old men or Girl with the dragon tattoo (swedish version).
Another mystery movie that is great is Where Eagles Dare which is a war movie but is also a mystery movie and keeps you guessing at all times who the bad guys are.
@@bighands69 I like all the movies you mentioned, except Where Eagles Dare, which I haven’t seen yet. Thanks for the suggestion!
And I’ll take the opportunity to say I think Jack Reacher is criminally under appreciated. I was very glad to see it among the other titles in your comment.

But i have watched LA confidential, Memento (soooo very slow but i guess worth it!) and ofc Kid Detective!! i didn't even know i was watching neo-noir! Cool!
My favorite neo noir has been Blade Runner. But thanks to you my world of NNM is going to expand. Thanks for this video!
Glad to be of help 👍
Watched ‘The Kid Detective’ today based on this recommendation. I love how you managed to sell it to me without giving anything away. What a brilliant movie that definitely deserves more love. A fantastic, modern day detective mystery that beats the hell out the flashy, empty parody of itself that was Knives Out. Not giving anything away I was hooked right away and shocked at the dark turn The Kid Detective had. It left me completely stunned in a way that I can’t remember the last time a movie that also managed to make me chuckle continuously has ever done before. 10/10 if you love Neo-Noirs & True Detective season 1 is also worth watching to if you love Neo-Noirs.
Glad you liked it 👍
My favourite film youtuber and my favourite genre
Very well thought out list. It still pains me that Le Samorai (1967) doesn't get as much recognition as it deserves. To me it is an embodiment of the genre, and Alain Delone is absolutely stunning there. Few other movies worth mentioning might be "The Long Goodbye" and "The Man Who Wasn't there", even though both of these might be considered post-noirs rather than neo-noirs due to subverting a lot of classic noir tropes. Sorry for the unstructured text, English punctuation is still a mystery to me)
You're making me want to watch every movie you cover. In various videos.
The Kid Detective? Thanks, I'm going to seek it out.
Great list!
nice compilation !
Many of the Coen Brothers' films, "Blood Simple", "Big Lebowski" (reinterpretation of "The Big Sleep"), etc., are fine neo-noir works.
Blew my mind that blood simple didn't make the list
“The Chaser” is criminally underrated.
I don’t see so many people discussing about this pure masterpiece which I find really sad.
The structure ,the characters, dark and gritty atmosphere are all excellent.
And the fact that this movie is based on a true event happened in South-Korea makes the movie even creepier.

Recently watched Le Cercle Rouge (1970) and it became an instant favorite. A great neo-noir as well as a thrilling heist film.
I have not seen that one I will look it up 👍

Memories of Murder is a masterpiece and one my all time favourite films! The Chaser is a superb film along with Memoirs of a Murderer, A Touch Of Sin, Black Coal Thin Ice, Ash is Purist White and The Wild Goose Lake.
What an awesome genre. Alan Parker’s Angel Heart should be on this list though. It showcased Mickey Rourke at his finest, the cinematography was on point and the symbolism and atmosphere was creepy af. Nolan himself said this film influenced Memento.
That's a thriller and a horror movie at times, not a film noir. A film noir has nothing in common with anything supernatural, as you may notice even from this list. It would not feature a devil, in other words. Having said that, I admire Angel's Heart too.
@@rafail3 “Film noir -
a style or genre of cinematographic film marked by a mood of pessimism, fatalism, and menace.”
I’d say Angel Heart fits that description perfectly.
And who says you can’t mix film noir and horror? Dark City mixes genres. It features aliens!
And then you have Blade Runner with it’s androids and flying cars.
The best movies always rewrite the rules.
Love the video! It would be dope if you could mention if any of these movies are on a streaming service/which one
I've seen almost all of the movies mentioned in the video (except nocturnal animals), and love them (may be not the 'kid detective').
Two suggestions:
1. Night moves (starring Gene Hackman)
2. Red Riding trilogy
I think Collateral deserves to be in the list.
The Place Beyond the Pines deserves a shout when talking about recent neo noire
Chinatown is the only movie i can remember where i can say i felt the same emotions as the main character and have out loud said to myself that the writing was perfect
As someone who doesn't like the genre that much (i have seen most of the films in this list, and yet i only really liked Blade runner and Chinatown), i have to say that i LOVE Memories of murder. It really puts me off when movies take themselves too seriosusly and usually find neo-noir movies too over the top and edgy, but i love how Memories of murder is also fun and kind of trashy, but also has a really nice cinematography and appealing character arcs. I can't recommend it enough 😅
Yeah Memories of Murder is great. Looking forward to getting the Criterion version.
Great video!
Thank you 👍
I got three great neo-noirs from the 80's that don't get enough love;
Thief by Michael Mann, great aesthetic that reminds me a bit from blade runner at times with awesome soundtrack from Tangerine Dream, James Caan's best role and it's all made in such way and authenticity that it's all believable. Drive owes a lot to this movie.
Cop starring James Woods in his best role ever(also first James Elroy adaptation), a dark little neo noir that's more of a character study of our messed up main character; one of the best endings ever.
To live and die in L.A , William Friedkin's best movie imo and it is so 80's both with aesthetic and fantastic soundtrack by Wang Chung. It seems to go by the basic renegade cop template but this movie is a lot smarter with it's writing and the viewer can sense from the beginning that something is off. Fantastic performances, fantastic carchase and a fantastic shock ending.
Thief just might bet Mann’s best and such a great film!
Great video folks!
Good video. I would recommend "La ragazza nella nebbia" ("The Girl in the Fog"), a 2017 Italian thriller movie about the murder of a girl in a town in the Alps and the following investigation.
