  • First time oil change on the ole Hybrid RAV4. Mostly meant to give you an idea of if you can do it yourself or not. Tools needed. Not meant to preach my 1,000 mile oil changes on new engines.

I totally agree on the 5k oil change. 10k is way to long. All the manufacturers are pushing the engineers to the limit to help reduce oil waste and to compete with other manufacturers claiming they can go 10k.
    Amazing video thank you.

I completely agree with the 1000 mile initial oil change. In my engine overhauls of the past, I used to change the oil after 500 miles. Engines are expensive, oil is cheap, as they say. Also heard that Mobil 1 synthetic is synthetic made from crude oil. Don't know if that's true or not. Found Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic 0w-16 is made from Natural Gas and is about $2 more per quart.
Fully support the oil change every 5k miles! Keep up the great videos!!

I had a 2021 Rav4 XLE, bought new. I did my 1st oil change at 1200mi, 2nd one at 4200mi, 3erd at 8200mi and the dealer did the freebee at 10k miles. I changed every 4k after that. That engine was strong and quiet. Makes a Big difference, changing it often.

i also am a 1,000 mile oil change guy for new vehicles. thats interesting on the fram tough guard oil filter.. its a 15,000 mile oil filter and had a nitrile anti drain back valve. well it was black in color which normally indicates a nitrile rubber instead of the orange silicone. great video! beautiful vehicle.👍

Great job! I think I have the exact same ramps. They look the same age and have worn identically as yours. I love them. I think I got them from Sears back in the 90s. Might want to get you some Harbor freight wheel chocks to put on the rear wheels just as an extra safety item. Also, may consider a Fumoto valve. I love them have them on three cars. They’re awesome! Thanks for posting.

While it shouldn’t be necessary to point out the importance of remembering to reinstall the drain plug, as a kid I distinctly remember an older friend dumping 6 quarts of oil in his crankcase, only to discover that it had drained directly onto his garage floor. I felt very badly because I might have been a distraction. Anyway, this is a very useful video, but I wouldn’t leave out that important reminder. 😉

Totally agree on 5k oil changes. Toyota plainly states in their maintenance schedule that there are many exceptions to the 10k recommendations. It takes 30 minutes and $35 to swap your oil. You're talking about a ~$500 difference over 150,000 miles to just do it.

Can you make a video showing the procedure for starting the hybrid in engine mode so that the oil cycles through the engine initially are replacing it? There should be a combination of additional steps to place the hybrid car into engine only mode and then are it’s shut off it should start up the second time in electric mode.

mpg but oh well) never had problems I’m way over 200,000 miles on odometer. Buy OEM filters online better price by quantity

Forgot to mention I do oil changes on all my cars every 3,000 miles. Always use OEM filters had bad experience with aftermarket always leaking. As of today no oil filter leaks 2007 Honda, 2016 Hyundai, 2017 Honda. Proud to say NO oil leaks from OEM oil filters

What style filter remover wrench did you use? The kind that fits over end of filter, or the older strap style with swivel handle? Just curious if the strap style would work ok, given location of filter. Thanks!

I have a new RAV4 and instead of buying a dedicated oil filter wrench I just use a pipe wrench was able to get it on there. Pipe wrenches work. Great for oil changes on most vehicles. Since I do the changes all the future ones should be hand tight anyway.

@@MarianA-vu8tb- there’s a guy that used to work at Mobile on one RUclips channel. I specifically asked him does the Toyota brand even though it’s made by Mobil have a different additives than the Mobil1 brand. He said it did. I don’t think it truly matters though. We’re talking about the minutia now. I wish Costco would start carrying 0W 16.!!

@@johnmartin7158- Amoil is a great oil I’m just not gonna spend the extra money for it based on doing changes myself every 3000 to 4000 miles. You’ll never convince me that it’s going to matter one iota over the life of the car. And I’m talking about cars that make it >250,000 miles. I just use Kirkland synthetic and save over half $$ over something like Amsoil. Just not worth it

It says in my Toyota manual that came with my 2024 Hybrid to put 4.8 quarts of oil when a filter is used.
    4.8 quarts = 153.6 oz.
    5 quarts = 160 oz.
Are you trying to tell me that the 6.4 oz.,
    [An ounce is TWO tablespoons.]
difference (less than 1/2 pint), will make such a devastating difference to your engine??????

I'm pretty sure you won't find that exact part number for the oil filter from the factory as the replacement filter will be a different part number.
I agree with your change interval recommendation; every 5k for synthetic or 3k for conventional. However if you do over 90% highway driving and nothing that would be considered severe use then every 8k or 10k might be okay but why risk it? I change ours every 5k on our 2009 RAV4 but I change the Fram Ultra filter every 10k since it's rated for 20k. I did an oil analysis to confirm that the filter is still doing it's job at 10k.
