England manager Gareth Southgate has named his provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2024 with call-ups for Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi and Kobbie Mainoo, but there was no place for Marcus Rashford or Jordan Henderson.
Southgate included five uncapped players in total -- Liverpool duo Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah, Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite, Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton and Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford -- as part of an expanded group strong in attacking talent.
Cole Palmer, Anthony Gordon, and Ollie Watkins were rewarded for fine seasons with Chelsea, Newcastle, Aston Villa respectively while Brentford forward Ivan Toney was also included despite only returning from an eight-month suspension for breaching Football Association betting rules in January.
Jack Grealish was selected despite starting just 10 league games in Manchester City's title-winning campaign while Mainoo's dramatic elevation continues having only made his full league debut for United against Everton in November.
Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has been included despite being sidelined since February with a muscle injury.
UEFA's deadline for final squad submissions is midnight on June 7, when Southgate will have to select 26 players from Thursday's list to take to Germany.
Rashford is the highest-profile omission, having been a squad member at England's past four tournaments dating back to Euro 2016.
The 26-year-old missed a penalty in England's Euro 2020 final shootout defeat to Italy at Wembley and was a substitute when Southgate's side were knocked out of the 2022 Qatar World Cup by France at the quarterfinal stage.
However, he has scored just seven goals in 33 league appearances this season as United recorded their worst-ever Premier League finish by ending in eighth place.
Southgate was heavily criticised for continuing to select Henderson after the midfielder left Liverpool last summer to join Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, a country whose human right record has been widely condemned.
Henderson joined Ajax in January, in part in a bid to keep alive his chances of staying part of Southgate squad but he has been left out along with Kalvin Phillips, who joined West Ham on loan from City in January with the same aim.
England face Bosnia and Herzegovina in Newcastle on June 3 before taking on Iceland at Wembley four days later.

I'm very hopeful & pumped up by the new Sir Alf like Brave 🦁 Gareth . I was critical of Gareth at the last two world cups for being too cautious.
It feels like learning about Sir Alf & watching brave Klopp win a cup with about 10 x under age 21 kids during the Reds biggest ever injury crisis has helped GS improve a lot as a Boss.
So Do ur daily prayers, England fans & help bring it home as u cant win without good luck karma.
Gr8 squad by Gareth. Maths Profs very glad. They say GS should select & announce the final squad on weds at 08.00am 5/6/24 in London to stress out rivals who will pick their teams on 7/6/24.
Extra 60-70 hrs for our 3 🦁 boys to relax & and visualise victory will be a big big plus factor too.
Nice boy Rashford failed to win Euro21 by fluffing cup final pen. Some boys peak early & fade away (Rashford, Jeffers, Walcott, etc) others peak later (eg Palmer & Gordon & Saka who are all much stronger mentally than Marcus & will score AET pen shootouts).
Playing a back 3 of Walker Stones Quansah will win it.
With Trent-AA & Trippier as wing backs (backed up by Shaw).
Golden trio midfield of Rice-Jude-Foden
Up front, Kane-Palmer (with Saka & Gordon as impact subs) will bring it home & end 58 yrs of hurt.

It feels like Gareth is channelling Sir Alf energy this time. (& Not Bobby Robson like in Euro 21).
Its finally coming home & then Gareth becomes ManU's new boss as per Oliver Holt Mail Sports article.
No offence was intended to Marcus who is a nice guy but look at how Saka bounced back after the pen miss.
Marcus missed an early pen & heaped pressure on Saka & Sancho.
Look at Marcus body language before the pen. I knew he wud miss it before he took it.
Gareth has picked a great squad & check out the analytics on the UK-RG Maths Profs website.
They love this squad.
They predicted Argentina would defeat France in Qatar World Cup final when most pundits said Messi wud lose in last 16 KO game cuz Messi was too old.
Mental resilience is stronger than youthful energy.

I reckon England are going to be forced to play with a back three and have the likes of Saka, Bowen, Gordon or Alexander Arnold at wing back.

Harvey Elliott should've been in this team and so should Jarrell Quansah.

Elliots position is already stacked, we have jude, palmer, foden etc. Jones is more of an eight and we need more defensive minded midfielders

Insane to drop Grealish. Totally different to all the other attackers in the squad. Probably the best dribbler of the ball England has, with an element of flair and unpredictability. Ability to retain possession is second to none. Doesn't panic in tight spaces and allows England to manage the game by calming play down and/or sustaining attacks. One of the best players in the world at winning set pieces and getting the team up the pitch. Being able to bring a player like that on for the last 20-30 minutes is absolutely invaluable in elite level tournament football.
@@jackbeswick4662 Bowen & Gordon deserve to be ahead of him, and have proved they’re both more a threat in front of goal than he is…
@@jamesgathers13 Gordon should be in definitely. Not convinced by Bowen tbh, not sure what he can do that other players can't also do, and hasn't really taken his chance for England yet. Grealish offers something different to the other options and is a proven game changer in tournaments.

What is all the fuss about Marcus Rashford being left out when he’s playing TAA in front of the likes of Ross Barkley and James ward-prowse Mitchell James Colwill Tamori Chalobah Lewis hall levermento burn in midfield Robson and hundson odi and a defenders in the lineup all 50% have missed the last part of the season and the pick of Maddison who has done nothing really this year and has been dropped by Tottenham
