I love all your videos. It’s so funny how I discovered you while trying to set up a crowd funding thing of my own…you had a book you were doing, paintings in a sketch book I believe…and I said to a friend of mine, here’s a guy that does what I do, but with painting. I’ve been a fan ever since. Now I discover you were a commercial artist too. How funny. Anyhoo I’m enjoying this video also. As usual, bravo.

I think the answer on why Mancini was so obsessed with realism may be that at the time photography wasn't so developed, so artists still could compete and be appreciated for their ability to portrait reality as it is, while now there is less interest on this side of art because of photography that can cover this necessity to obtain high realism. Maybe...

I think Mancini found that way of working with a grid to be really easy. It probably helped him block in all the major proportions super quick, and then he could just focus on parts he found fun like the color mixing and the texture. I think he was just being really relaxed about it and using a grid system to make it real easy. There were so many out of this world, astoundingly good painters during the "fin de siecle" that I don't think he was even trying to compete anymore, or show how technically amazing he was. I believe he left the grid marks in the paint surface to make it obvious that he used a grid and "cheated". Maybe I'm completely wrong, but that's the sense I get. Using grids makes it much, much easier and many consider it a form of cheating. I think he was being really relaxed about it all and taking it easy, just having fun painting how he wanted to and not giving a damn what anyone thought. If he was alive today I think he would just paint right on top of large printed photos.

Painting stories is an interesting exercise, there's something about how people take the time to compose instagram stories that can communicate information by adding graphic elements!

A weird thing happened to me regarding grids: i have always hated the restrictive character of all those little squares but one day, for no discernible reason, I used a Fibronacci spiral both on my reference photo and on my canvas. This was a strangely liberating experience, as if those curves cured me of the cramps I get working with endless numbers of squares. As to Mancini: there can come moments in life where an artist stops trusting herself, no matter how good he actually is.....

Your videos are so expanding and thought provoking. Big - that's the word. Like looking at a leaf - and spending the rest of your life explaining it. It gets more and more interesting the more you look. And those "little" things that have been swirling in our minds, but not fully articulated, come out in your videos.

This is absolutely amazing! May I ask, why do you start off by using brown and then proceed to go over it with actual color later?

Hey! I love your videos so much! Also, I am wondering if you are painting on paper? If so, what kind of paper is it? And do you add a coat or two of gesso? : )

Great end to a great theme! at about the 6 minute mark you have achieved the most gorgeous block-in, I wouldn't have dared to touch it lol but of course you only managed to build beautifully upon it. Incredible.
Also, I follow a lot of artists who are seemingly a part of this Cane-Yo collective, is this reference group open to the public? that sounds incredible, I'd love to be a part of that if I could.
