  • We continue with our Interpreting our Reference Week with a bit of a curve ball. While painting Fer, I realized that a photo cannot compete with life experiences. A photo can only serve as a reminder of those experiences, but it certainly can't carry the very sensible information that is integral to the relationship between the person that takes the photograph and the person that is photographed. While many others, I'm sure, can do a better job and transcribing more faithfully a photo of Fer, nobody will be able to paint her like I do, based solely on the love that I feel for my children. In today's vid I reflect upon the disconnect that may be inherent to painting from photographs, and why the apparent opposite of that, painting from life, may not quite be the answer we're looking for either.

He paints beautifully, intelligently, explains articulately, discusses art philosophically & teaches succinctly.

“Nobody knows my kids better than myself, nobody,…how could a drawing ability make up for that lack of knowledge...I told myself it simply can’t…I am the best person in this planet to paint the people that I love.” (14:53) ❤️❤️❤️

No one else could have said what you said or feel the exact same love and devotion you do about a painting of her, and that's where the real Art and Beauty is.

I really love honesty and openness in your words as much as in your art. Maybe that is the reason why it touches so much

You've exactly expressed the things I have learned about painting and fatherhood through the years. Thanks for sharing!

Usted es un amor de persona, Uribe, lo queremos. Pero esto se lo digo en nombre de sus dieciocho mil suscriptores: deje de humillarnos a todos con eso de que es heavy handed!

I echo the other comments. A painting after Manet. Amazing how you go from a flat harsh brown sketch to soft dynamic skin, which almost feels sculpted in soft clay.

My intention isn’t at all to negate the very point you beautifully articulated about the intimacy of painting BEYOND the surface of what we see, but to someone who doesn’t have knowledge of either sitter…oh my goodness…Fer’s doppelgänger is at 13:17 😉
