@@doctorfeinstone6524 Your both right, they just lost the sense of humor/easter eggs when games started going out never finished. Us consumers are do deprived that any finished game looks like a masterpiece!
Years ago I made a short movie that was a hunk of junk. When I was finished with the editing, I called the main actresses and let them know they could download the video and watch it. One of them was shocked. I asked her why and she said, "I've been in about twenty short movies over the last few years, and only two have been completed." So kudos to this guy for starting and finishing his game. It's much more work than people think.
When James Rolfe in his Nerdsona said “This isn’t a game! This is like some kind of weird college experiment!!” it turns out he was not far from hitting the nail on the head. It was an experiment! A mad experiment put together by some mad scientist during a time when video game developers were being experimental with budding CD technology. Funny how years later the once forgotten legacy of Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties will now be available on far more successful platforms than the 3DO.
"Exploring" has always been one of the most unique series on RUclips. So many channels cover infamous/bad movies and games and it's clear that their "research" consists of reading a Wikipedia article and maybe the first few results they saw on Google, and ultimately viewers are left feeling hollow because they didn't learn anything new. You're one of the few creators that puts effort into actual research about these niche topics, and it's very much appreciated.
Thank you, that really means a lot. I try to get as much as possible whenever I do these and it causes many headaches. So when I hear its appreciated, it makes it all worth it.
I agree with him Cecil, your stuff has always, ever since I discovered this channel in college, been one of my personal favorites to watch. It's very obvious that you put a lot of time and effort into your videos and I've learned so much about very obscure media because of you, so thank you for that. By the way, I always had the slightest suspicion that this game was meant to be intentionally bad because some of the dialogue in the game really seemed to be pointing that out and now, because of you, I know that my suspicions were well founded.@@GoodBadFlicks
This story comes off like one of those feelgood movies where the montage at the end shows all the characters achieving their dreams after they parted ways.
Plumbers Don't Wear Ties benefits from what I like to call "The Travolta Effect." Basically, if you got folks who are having a good time making a movie/game, then regardless of the objective quality, that transmits to the player, and they're going to have fun too.
This was wholesome, thanks for telling these stories. We(the includes me) often complain about generic big budget productions, yet are so quick to shoot down fun experiments.
I actually admire Mike, having heard this story. Using his money just to 'experiment', knowing up front he wasn't going to spend enough money to make even a decent game. He knew (or at least figured) he wasn't going to get any kind of reasonable ROI, yet he plowed forward full steam, just for the sake of doing it, and injected crazy, good natured ridiculousness in the process! What a gem.
It's one of thoes games you gotta play at least once. It's such a bizarre and fun experience, and there's much more craziness that James didn't show in his review. Can't wait for the re-release.
Some play throughs have been uploaded in recent years. I watched one in 2020 which was advertised as 60 frames per second. Your guess is as good as mine.
The great thing with low budget productions like this is that somewhere, someone will love it and it will mean something to them because of memories of that time. I've worked on numerous shorts and all but forgotten about them and every now and then I overhear someone talking about one of them, especially at film festivals or places where they were shot and I think "wow, that person is talking about something I help make.".....Great video Cecil.👍

My favorite part of this story is how Mike Anderson didn’t care when it was over. No ego attached, no concern about the reaction. He had fun and moved on. Good for him.
I had never heard of Plumbers don’t ware ties. Even in deep dive videos about the 3d0. Man, I’m glad there’s people like you who plumb the deepest depths of pop culture for stuff like this. I love this show, and I love this channel. Your really doing the lords work with this one. Lol. Cheers.
I wanted a super Nintendo so bad when I was young. One day my dad showed up with a goldstar 3DO system. I was not thrilled, but he was so excited for the new technology. Once we had it set up I was thrilled, I had a new system that even took CDs! I ended up loving that system. They did so many cool things ( like how you could daisy chain the remotes together to get multiple players ) and so many great games. PO'ed, return fire, Wing Commander, and even PDWT. I can remember playing this game so many times just to see every ending possible. I'm sure I was too young to be playing it, but it's seared into my brain. Good times
The 3do sucked. Let's be real. We all know that. Still, there's a small place in our heart for it because of nostalgia. How many of us wanted a system so bad and for one reason or another got our hands on a... 3do? Damnit. Good times.
This game was featured in my favorite episode of The Angry videogame nerd. It's getting a re-release this year and I'm going to buy it just to check it out.
So many channels have popped up talking about movies over the past few years, but Cecil, you still have one of the best on RUclips. This video was very interesting and well-researched.
Plumbers Don't Wear Ties looks and feels like a movie you'd see on late night cable back in the 90s but in video game form. I'm sure I'm not the only one who got that vibe.
20/10 content. I was stoked when you said you were doing an Exploring on the game. I knew it would be the most in depth content on the game possible. Cecil is the gaming historian we all need.
I first heard about the game when I was in high-school. I was looking up about Adult games after an episode of X-Play on G4 and came across this and, with the very little information I could find, just moved on... then the AVGN episode came out a few years later and I was laughing my ass off just remembering what little I learned about the game back then.
Great job on the video, Cecil. So glad that you were able to get one of your personal projects done. All I knew about the game was the AVGN episode, which is still in my playlist of favorites AVGN episodes. I once made the claim to friends that Plumbers Don't Wear Ties was the funniest episode of AVGN. So far, none of my friends have argued the point. If, and I only say if, one of your other special projects is the interactive movie game "Tender Loving Care", me and my friends will hit the ceiling with joy.
Love that your first image for Glendale is of part of the Americana, which was built more than a decade later. (Really, since I’m like 2 miles from there, it was nice to see it.)
When I saw this title again after so many years I instantly thought; “Oh my god, this could be very well the grandfather of goofy visual novels” and your commentary at the end solidified my thoughts exactly. I love it when people have fun with any media production even if the final product is goofy as heck. In rare cases, the goofy product gets a cult status and that’s how we also got the now legendary official English dub of Ghost Stories. Great video, I had the biggest grin watching the story unfold.
I'm glad you got to do something you've been so eager to do! I get that this is an experimental game, and for that, I applaud it. Without experimental projects that fail, we wouldn't have experimental projects that succeed. It deserves to be remembered. It's kind of wild, though, that we're at the point where a RUclips video looking at something from the past can attribute part of that history to another RUclips video.
As the guy trying to be the resident expert on Saved By the Bell, I'll say that Jeanne Basone's appearance on SBTB was uncredited. She's gets some quick bits of screen time in one of the Malibu Sands episodes and looks just as good as you think she would. And fantastic job on a great topic. You are the gold standard when it comes to informational entertainment.
I love a good story that has a chance of it all ending sadly, but then coming back because of one person. In my eyes, the one Redditor who picked it up from the one library (and basically made this all possible) is just as important as Micheal Anderson. I say thank you to that kind soul. We did it, Reddit!
I had head about this game but never knew any of the story behind it, or even how hated it was by so many. Ironically, the "Take your damn clothes off!" line I only recognized because fellow YTer Razorfist uses it as a chat notification during his streams
Seeing this pop up on my front page I was thinking I had already watched this. Then I remembered that I had watched AVGN's video awhile back! lol I am glad you got to showcase this "game" in you own style and got to dig a bit deeper into how this thing came to be and why it's a cult classic today.
I worked at Babbage's part time after school when this title released. I always wondered where the hell it came from, what its deal was. Now after roughly 30 years, I know.
Fun Fact: There was even a 25th Anniversary DVD/Blu-Ray version i found completely by accident browsing internet archive a couple of years back, closest i'll get to a physical copy of this funny american visual novel.
as terrible as the game was, the fact that it had a lasting impact that reverberates to this day is a huge accomplishment… and like last video, your series are great: keep them up, you’ll never run out of material with these unique series
Yeah, but 80% of that reverberation was due to AVGN spotlighting it, who was one of the hottest RUclipsrs during the early days of RUclips. And it was during "Season 4", one of AVGN's Top 2 "Seasons" of releases, filled with tons of classic episodes.
I remember years ago, someone put this game on RUclips, to play! Someone just uploaded every scene in a playlist. You just watched the scenes and followed the links at the end, and it would go forward or backward. I spent a few hours playing it on here, and saw what might be my favorite comment under one of the most repeated videos in the playlist: "Is this hell?"
This was a pleasant surprise. I’ve been wanting to play this game since I was a little kid and saw the ad in a magazine (Gamefan or EGM). AVGN’s episode on this game is one of my favorites from his nearly 20 year history. Looking forward to playing this when LRG releases it in 2029 😂
I always appreciate how you take a look at this type of media with the focus on the reality of the people involved with making it and not with the intention to dunk on it. This channel has always been great at this, the content is always fun to watch without ever needing to go in on a movie that's probably already received it's fair share of vitriol. It's always refreshing to see and again, very much appreciated! Hope one of these days we get to see GoodBadFlicks cover a movie called They Look Like People. It's a real dime!
Thank you! I really love being able to tell the stories of entertainment that is different from the rest. They Look Like People is so good! A great little indie film that knocked me over when I saw it. If I can get a hold of the director, I'd love to do a video on it
@@GoodBadFlicks It's my pleasure! You always do such a great job with that and it's always a blast to watch. That'd be awesome! Here's hoping you get up with him sometime, it'd be great to see that movie get the GBF treatment!
For almost a decade now, I've been singing, "He's a cat, an evil cat!" whenever the outro music starts. That kickass Uninvited theme has been pervasive in my head for years! Also, I would love to see and Exploring video for Big Trouble in Little China. Just a thought. Cheers from Indy!
I remember seeing this when Ihad a 3DO. It was baffling that such low quality was available in a mall store. I never played it and thought it had to be a joke.
Your channel is one that I always look forward to. Not only is your stuff hilarious, but you put a lot of heart and work into finding the people who worked on the game/movie/show so they can dish info that doesn't show up on Wikipedia. I tip my hat (and tie) off to you, dear Sir!
See, that's fun. I've played (and even enjoyed) a whole bunch of old bad games before (most recently it was Tender Loving Care), but it's rare that one is deliberately and joyfully designed that way for fun. It makes the player happy and that has a high value in this day and age.
I was wondering if Anderson would later go on to become that infomercial/early internet MEME Matthew Lesko too, just found himself a Riddle suit with that bow-tie yelling about how to get government grants on the easy. LOL Guess that was a different guy, just reminded me of him. He does know that AVGN was just a performance though, and James isn't really that angry right? Although I never watched GLOW as a kid, I did recognize "Hollywood" from that Married W. Children episode where Al thought he was gonna wrestler her, only to reveal the woman he had to survive in the ring with was Big Bad Mamma (also from GLOW) who flattens him to great comedic effect as usual! LOL
So happy to see this. I discovered this channel while pursuing my love for Digital Pictures and found the Sewer Shark review. Since then, I kept hoping for a return of Good Bad Games for years now. Thanks for this.
You are welcome! The games stuff takes longer and usually doesn't do as well here, which is why I only do it once it a while. I'd love to do it more but the algorithm prevents it.
dude.. the way you dig up information on obscure media is seriously incredible.. i spent 3 months trying to find out who owned the rights to 3DO's army men franchise lol
I love and admire the spirit behind doing something like this. Just grabbing a video camera and just doing it regardless!!! 👍😊. Maybe its fun spontaneity is what made its formula so appealing, and lasting?! Never seen, or heard of this one before?! But… RE-MAKE! RE-MAKE! 😂👍. I thought that NIGHT TRAP was the MOST “Notorious” game ever made though? Or at least the most controversial anyway? 🤔
Hah..... at 5:17 in the video--that's the old fountain at the Music Center plaza in downtown LA (same with the columns at 7:08). I used to work there and it was nice to see it even if for a moment.
I'd always wondered about the history of this and it's nice to hear how innocent, fun and simple it actually all is. So used to hearing about behind the scenes drama with "bad" projects and I feel this makes it hard to now think of it as one of the worst games. Time has been kind to it as a quirky novelty.
This game does to the gaming industry what Tommy Wiseau's The Room does to the film industry. A cult classic for sure. Thanks for refreshing my memory of this game since James Rolfe first mentioned it in his AVGN video. Looking forward to your next Exploring video!
For some reason I love the rare offshoots of the Exploring series that covers videogames. Furthermore, I love that this was something special to you Cecil and not just a random game to make a video on. Unfortunately I never got to play it and I only learned about it from James AVGN episode. But I miss the time when developers use to experiment like this. The technology just wasn't there yet and developers were at their most ingenuitive in finding ways of jumping a head, resulting in FMV and digitised graphics. Sure they weren't perfect but they definitely had their charm. Looking at today we have consoles as powerful as todays computers and most of the AAA games all look the same, with indie devs being the only experimentals. Thanks for this video Cecil, it was a real treat. The critics absolutely missed the point of this game. It's not the production value that has made this game what it is today. It's the fun and personality that went into this game that makes it so special.
Thanks! This meant a lot to me and I'm really happy to see that its resonating with people. I agree, I miss the days when we had wacky innovations. Now, we have these amazing looking games but they are all the same. All the computing power and none of the imagination.
Part and parcel for the 3do at the time. From the guy in Need for Speed (last I heard he worked as a car dealer) to video boardgames like Twisted, there was just so much weirdness that couldn't be had on more established consoles (especially if you didn't have the money for a PC). Sure, a lot of it was crap, but it was crap that opened your eyes to the possibilities (SGF's LPs of FMV games have been a riot).
I came across this game on an old gaming stream site (insomniac gamers, if anyone remembers) back before twitch was popular. One of the streamers, I can't remember his handle (I think maybe pickles?) "played" this game a couple times a year, and it was always a treat watching the chat pop off during the ridiculous scenes
I worked w the porting team at Kirin. We were all still students (high school & college) and thought it would be cool to work on a 3DO console. I moved on to big tech (Oracle, Peoplesoft) and the guys went on to Cartoon Network and EA Games.
This is the most unexpectedly wholesome gaming story I’ve ever heard.

LOL that line is the best, I had to put it in there at the end. :)
I love these deep dive type videos. Keep up the great work man! 😄
Thanks! Will do!
I'll take any story of a lost work that includes the sentence "the actors were well paid".
Seeing this pop up on my front page I was thinking I had already watched this. Then I remembered that I had watched AVGN's video awhile back! lol I am glad you got to showcase this "game" in you own style and got to dig a bit deeper into how this thing came to be and why it's a cult classic today.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m so glad I stuck around until the very end
I wanted to put that in but it didn't fit with the ep so I made it its own story. :)
I worked at Babbage's part time after school when this title released. I always wondered where the hell it came from, what its deal was. Now after roughly 30 years, I know.
Glad to be able to answer a forgotten question :)
It’s funny that all the things James Rolfe complained about in the game were intentional!
Fun Fact: There was even a 25th Anniversary DVD/Blu-Ray version i found completely by accident browsing internet archive a couple of years back, closest i'll get to a physical copy of this funny american visual novel.
Hit me square in the nostalgia with those Mad Dog McCree references
as terrible as the game was, the fact that it had a lasting impact that reverberates to this day is a huge accomplishment…
and like last video, your series are great: keep them up, you’ll never run out of material with these unique series
Thanks!
Yeah, but 80% of that reverberation was due to AVGN spotlighting it, who was one of the hottest RUclipsrs during the early days of RUclips. And it was during "Season 4", one of AVGN's Top 2 "Seasons" of releases, filled with tons of classic episodes.
Still to this day, the most legendary of AVGN episodes. Truly a classic.
I remember years ago, someone put this game on RUclips, to play! Someone just uploaded every scene in a playlist. You just watched the scenes and followed the links at the end, and it would go forward or backward. I spent a few hours playing it on here, and saw what might be my favorite comment under one of the most repeated videos in the playlist:
"Is this hell?"
This was a pleasant surprise.
I’ve been wanting to play this game since I was a little kid and saw the ad in a magazine (Gamefan or EGM).
AVGN’s episode on this game is one of my favorites from his nearly 20 year history.
Looking forward to playing this when LRG releases it in 2029 😂
I remember when James covered this and really gave it more attention than it ever had. It was crazy.
Agreed, the game would not have its fame if it wasn’t for James. I’m gonna assume you are gonna grab the definitive version shortly? 😊
Yep.
Great story! Thanks for sharing and thanks for your continued efforts. You're always making top notch videos.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
Cecil, I'm super happy that you got to this "holy grail" episode!
Thanks! So am I :)
Your joy during this video is so infectious… ❤
Thanks! I was smiling the entire time. :)
It's the little things that brings us joy!
Thank you so much! I'm doing my best over here :)
See, that's fun. I've played (and even enjoyed) a whole bunch of old bad games before (most recently it was Tender Loving Care), but it's rare that one is deliberately and joyfully designed that way for fun. It makes the player happy and that has a high value in this day and age.
In art there really is something that causes the joy of the making of to come through in the finished product.
I love your research, much historical value there is
Thank you!
LOL
I can see why these videos take so much time. This was really fun and excellent.
Thank you! This one took ages but I'm glad it was worth it :)
Always think of the classic AVGN episode with this lol
Been watching you for almost 5 years. Love your perspective and positivity. Please keep up the gold! You honestly make my life better.
Wow, thank you! Glad to have a positive impact :)
Thank you to all involved. I loved this game ❤
You are welcome! I really loved being able to do this. :)
Oh man what a great video! I was so fascinated with this when AVGN did his video. Great video, man thank you!
Thanks for watching!
dude.. the way you dig up information on obscure media is seriously incredible.. i spent 3 months trying to find out who owned the rights to 3DO's army men franchise lol
I am persistant in my digging. ^^
You really do put together some great documentary material. Almost time to re-watch some history about 80s slashers! :)
Thanks, all
Thank you!
I had no idea this existed. Now I'm beginning to think Sutter Kane needs to start writing that final novel of his.
LOL!
This was such a journey. I'd never heard any of this. Neat!
Thanks!
This game man... It's truly unique in its own Fucked up way😂😂😂
I love and admire the spirit behind doing something like this. 🤔
Night Trap might be better known.
This video answers EVERYTHING as to why the game turned into what it is. I love AVGN's video on it. Thanks GoodBad!
You are welcome!
Hah..... at 5:17 in the video--that's the old fountain at the Music Center plaza in downtown LA (same with the columns at 7:08).
Thanks! I've uncovered so many horror stories its nice to just tell a tale where everything went along quite nicely.
The history of Time travel is a good one also. I don’t know if it’s overlooked or not. It was on prime for a while.
This game does to the gaming industry what Tommy Wiseau's The Room does to the film industry. A cult classic for sure.
Thanks for refreshing my memory of this game since James Rolfe first mentioned it in his AVGN video.
Looking forward to your next Exploring video!
Thanks!
I've had questions about this game since it was on rental shelves, and then since the AVGN I've had even more questions. This is a great video.
Thank you!
This is amazing. Love the story behind this 'game" . Great work!!
Thanks!
I wonder how shocked they were to find out that the 3DO version sells for 300+ CIB and over 800 NIB.. lol
I'm going to stream this soon over on my Twitch
I worked w the porting team at Kirin. We were all still students (high school & college) and thought it would be cool to work on a 3DO console. I moved on to big tech (Oracle, Peoplesoft) and the guys went on to Cartoon Network and EA Games.
Hey! I'd like to ask you some questions. If you can send me an email cecil (@) goodbadflicks (dot) com. Thanks!
@@GoodBadFlickswill do. I'm a big fan of your channel!
Never heard of it before, thank you for the education!
Thank you for watching!
This exploring videos are always so much fun.😅
Thanks!
Wow. I never knew that!
Very well done, as always! but really liked the deep-dive on a flick-adjacent thing I'd never think to look into. Mad propers!
Thank you!
I wasn’t expecting this tbh.
This is awesome 😂
:)
Never thought I wanted to learn more about this game... but I am glad I did. Great video!!!
Thanks!
