The Blob is one of the very few remakes that actually compliments the original while exceeding at what it does, the 80's had quite a few horror and non horror remakes and I guess the 2000sish years had a few too, though The Blob is a special kind if remake that doesn't rip off scenes from the original... it remade them the proper way with thoughtfulness and admiration
I've been a horror fan for nearly four decades, and the Blob remake is one of a very small number of films that still squicks me out after multiple rewatches. The effects and gore are absolutely top notch, especially for a film made on such a tiny budget, and it pokes hard at a spot in my brain that reacts to body horror. That head vanishing down the drain gives me a cold shiver every time.
I had some friends over with their kids and they were talking about horror movies so I played them the blob. They laughed at it in the beginning but by the end they were perfectly quiet.
Haha 😂 Perfectly quiet
I'd like to have seen their faces in that scene where the boyfriend gets eaten and his arm ripped off. It's so badass and unexpected.
@@JasonHauser125 it was great, the kids( i use that term loosely 14-17) were just making fun of the special effects at the beginning. We ALL gave them a lesson in the difference between practical and cgi effects, the grittiness...they definitely understood by the end.
They even uttered the words,"why don't they make movies like this anymore "?
@@ask3xd903 Why indeed. It's a lost era for the most part. Some films try to replicate the old style practical effects, but not often.
@@JasonHauser125 I always feel like the old man, "back in my day"... but I give actual evidence. Ill point out to my kids that most singers can't keep a proper beat. 1234, and they understand me. Im raising proper critics over here lol.
1988' s the blob is one of the freaking best horror movies ever. Well done, well acted, nice sfx and great execution.
The practical effects were amazing. Not that many knows Tony Gardner's name, but that guy is absolutely next level and what he has done over the years is stunning.
When it comes to 80's remakes of classics, "the Blob", "Invaders from Mars", "the Thing" and "the Fly" were the best of the bunch.
I'm glad that you included Invaders from Mars! That movie doesn't get enough love.
@@johntangen3652 Invaders from Mars does need more love, it was actually better than the original. It had a lot of good things going for it.
Glad you all mentioned Invaders From Mars, cuz I don't know that one. Now I get to explore a classic that's new to me
@@leyenda6149 it's directed by Tobe Hooper(director of Poltergeist, Texas chainsaw Massacre 1&2 and Lifeforce), it's worth checking out. It's kind of like Poltergeist where it's a horror film kids can watch, but it's still a Horror movie. I recommend it. 👍
although made in 78, i would include invasion of the body snatchers
I'm so happy this film has gotten the credit it deserves!
Let's hope that many more people will discover it too
Paul's death is one of the most terrifying in movie history. It still holds up to this day.
Such a great effect.
It's pretty damn horrifying, although personally, I think the guy sucked into the sink is worse. I don't want to even contemplate the physics of that one.
Also, Hobbs the projectionist.
Agreed!
Ya if your movie history ends in the 90s
Sorry to heard about your dad, at least he could see your son a little before the passing. Stay strong, brother! Love your work and your enthusiasm!
This movie along with John Carpenter's The Thing are two horror films that genuinely scared the living hell out of me when I was growing up, after I watched each one respectively for the first time I slept with one eye open over a week.
And they're both (arguably) the best horror remakes of all time!
The thing is technically a remake of an old 50s horror film
@@noaha6185 Kinda funny how the inspiration for the original Blob movie came to Jack Harris after he saw the original THING movie in the theater.
@noaha6185 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers. For some reason, I find 1980s horror remakes lame.
Dont forget the Fly
One of the best remakes that no one talks about is Night of the Living Dead 1990. One of the reasons that I think that the film works is because the script was written by George A. Romero and it is basically what he wanted to do in 68, but didn't have the money to do it. Plus this film was directed by Tom Savini.
That was a good remake, yeah. Though it didn’t hugely revamp the story. It was a relatively straightforward update.
I do like the update to Barbara's character and love the "living dead" in the remake. Extremely creepy!
It better than the original imo. Scared the crap outta me
One thing they never talk about is that it’s the first time that people turn when they die even when they haven’t been bitten
I know it’s controversial to say this, but I full on prefer the remake to the original NOTLD.
Same with Dawn of the Dead.
Also, it was the first Zombie Film to use contact lenses to produce that glazed over milky corpse eyes look. ALL Zombie movies before this just used skin makeup to give'em that pale bloodless look, and leaving the eyes looking plainly human... which always takes you outta the movie(BUT ) in NOTLD '90-Savini was the first Director to introduce filmgoers to the "glazed over" effect which REALLY made his zombies stand out and scare the pants outta people! I remember reading CINEFANTASTIQUE (A Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror Movie rag-when they still made them-pre-internet) when this film came out and it had an interview with him on how he did the EFX and he explained he how he went to forensics labs to study the process of decomposition.
The phrase "cheapy creepy" is absolutely charming and I think we should bring it back
Seconded
Agreed
Producer: YoU cAn'T KiLl KiDs In ThE mOvIe!
Chuck Russel: O B S E R V E !
The Thing, The Fly, and The Blob are some of the all time greatest horror films ever made. Amazing and groundbreaking effects in all 3 films.
They're all remakes too.
@@charlesderosas5577 I'd add little shop of horrors to that list. amazing and groundbreaking effects and also a remake.
The craziest part of this video is that legendary lineup this movie was facing on opening day/week/month.
It had no chance...it was set to fail spectacularly.
It also has one of the greatest cliffhanger horror movie endings of all time: All he has to do is let it loose in a big city and it's all over.
Probably for the chance of sequel.
Until winter sets in.
Waiting for The Blob 2
Many condolences on your Dad's passing. And this is a great episode btw. "The Blob", "The Thing" and "The Fly" remakes rank as some of the greatest horror flicks ever produced in my humble opinion, and are certainly the last and greatest of the analog and puppeteering effects movies (I'd give honorable mention to the first two "Hellraiser" films for the same on effects) as well.
Deepest condolences about your father. From the sounds of it...him being a Blob fan... I'm sure he'd have appreciated this episode. I hope you and your family are doing ok. Thanks for sharing your time just to entertain a bunch of movie nerds.
I remember seeing this in the theater as a kid and it is responsible for making me a horror fan. This is a great movie and highly underrated.
Absolutely scared the shit out of me when I was younger. The movie is unrelenting on having the blob creature do the craziest nasty melting attacks on people and depicting it in most descriptive way possible. Thank you so much for doing a deep dive on this.
What's ever scarier is there's a viral infection that melts skin and bones but not at that level
Another disease is the brain eating amoeba that acts very similar to the blob in the remake
If you live in a warm climate stay away from swamps and ponds
I'm so sorry about what happened with your Dad. I lost my Dad to brain cancer in a terribly similar experience. It was an incredible miracle that your dad lived longer after his 1st Stroke, and I also got an extra 6months with my Dad. I am so sorry for your loss. Been a long time fan of the channel, and thank you for sharing your experience with us, God bless.
Thank you for your kind words. I genuinely appreciate them. Sorry for your loss as well.
The Blob remake is one of the few horror films that genuinely scares me.
Same, I can’t stand any of the deaths, they freak me out wayyyy too much.
The kids death always gets me

The scene where the can man pokes the blob scarred me as a kid for life- it's always the one scene I remember even if I didn't know the name of the film. The effects are fantastic in this film and Chuck Russell made a fantastic remake

When a remake is so good that it eclipses the original, just like with the Thing.
And Scarface.

@@lutherheggs451 You're entitled to your opinion, sir.
When I saw the Blob remake, I was stunned at how great it was. I was engrossed and really on the edge of my seat.
I just loved it and how you were kept guessing on who would be the next victim
I also like the fact that it was its own thing while being a remake
absolute classic, one of only a few remakes that are better than the original.
I agree 1,010%
That list is probably longer than you think...there are mos def more than a few, I can think of almost a dozen...
@@Axolotl_Mischief I would appreciate it if you could name the dozen that you are currently come to mind
I'd say the Donald Sutherland Invasion of the body snatchers is better than the first The cronenberg Fly (which he mentioned) Nick Cage's The wicker man......just kidding that one sucks LOL
I have both this film and the Steve McQueen movie
And I 200% agree
It's a truly good horror film and it's a shame it didn't get the recognition it deserved. Hopefully the attention you've given it will lead to more people discovering it.
Absolutely underrated remake of the 80s, the director has also a nice career
the blob (1988) is not underrated.

Having also lost my father last year, this moved me greatly. I'm really happy you had this to really honor your dad and bring everything full circle, as it were. First video of yours I've ever seen BTW.
A childhood classic. And the practical effects have aged so well
Yup. Because all the effects are *actually there* !
@@viewtiful1doubleokamihand253 Definitely. Paul getting absorbed is etched into my brain.
Cecil, first off, this video on The Blob remake was awesome!! I always love when you cover movies I’ve grown up with & love. The Blob (‘88) was one of the few horror movies that scared the shit out of me as a kid, but I love as an adult. I completely agree with you that this film, Carpenter’s The Thing, and Cronenberg’s The Fly are the high watermark of remake trilogies. Wish more filmmakers would learn from those.
On a serious note, I’m very sorry to hear about your dad’s passing. I lost my dad last October (the day before Halloween) to Lewy Body Dementia. One of the very best memories I have of him, was a very comical debate we had over what was the better Blob movie. He grew up with the 50’s original & obviously I grew up on the 80’s remake. It’s one of those memories that no one else would understand if they weren’t there in the room with us, but it’s one I’ll never forget. May both our fathers Rest In Peace & look down on us proudly from Heaven above😎
Some of the BEST special effects in movie history, absolutely terrifying.
A great video exploring a highly underrated movie. Well done.
Thanks!
I'm glad you're back, Cecil! As always, you've got our support and the support of your family.
Great video! You explained so many things that I always wondered about. This is an excellent movie. Also, lovely tribute to your father at the end.
Thank you so much!
Underrated. Its definitely up there with some of the best remakes. You have likable characters, nice kills etc. Plus a strawberry jam gets killed.
I lost my Dad on Augst 16th 2016 he was 56 and died from cancer It's been really hard without him. You posting this video on the 5 year anniversary of his death is a wierd coincidence. We both loved the Blob remake, we seen it at the theatre 2 times when it came out. When I was younger my Mother worked at a video store and My Dad and I were able to rent movies for free. We watched just about every movie you have done whether it was Good Bad or Exploring. I love your channel especially since I lost my Dad. Thank you for everything and I am sorry for your loss.

Chuck Russell: *_Here's a little lesson in blobbery-_*
Thanks for this one, Cecil. I was a teen working in a movie theater when this came out. I was lucky enough to get a sneak preview ticket (at ComicCon) for it. It was a loud, raucous full house, and everyone loved it. It is one of my favorite memories from that time in my life. Too bad this movie never got the respect it deserved.
P.S. I truly appreciate your heartfelt story about your dad.
A Trinity of horror Awesome remakes came out in the 80s. The Blob, The Fly and The Thing.
Brilliant films. Better than the Originals.
I love practical effects. They usually work because they are actually physically present can be interacted with.
This must be a very special episode to you 🥺
The story about your dad was very heartfelt 💕💕
I love how detailed each this channels videos are. It’s more like a fun history lesson in horror as a genre, rather than straight opinion. I learn something new each time!! Keep up the amazing videos!
Thank you for sharing your story at the end. That was incredibly touching and imo it's hard to be that vulnerable in public. I will be watching The Blob tonight. Can't wait to see what you do next.
I wouldn't at all consider myself a horror nerd but I appreciate this movie so much that when on a road trip last year I stopped by Abbeville, LA (it was only 30 min off the interstate) and not only took photos but re-created the opening crane shot and stayed until it was dark to get night photos, per the third act. It was not one of the first horror movies I saw but one of the first I remember. The Fly and The Thing get all the re-make attention but this absolutely deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as those two.
It's always good to see Cecil. This is definitely one of the best remakes. 80s was the best time.
Edit: Condolences to you and yours.
My friend my deepest condolences on your loss. I know that you having a child, making him a grandfather made him very proud of you. When a man sees how a family goes full circle brings a light in a grandfather's eye .A legacy is a success more than careers. Also this is by far one of your best videos I've seen. I love the Blob and didn't have a clue how many of the effects were done.I put this on my list of favs. to see it when I could enjoy it fully. I've seen Red Letter Media s RE:view of it and while funny, wasn't nearly as informative or in depth as this. I enjoyed this a hell of a lot. Just keep busy at what you do to deal with this loss.I lost both of my parents 3 yrs apart from each other when I was a teenager. My sincerest condolences about your father. He sounded like a tough dude with impeccable taste.
This is one of my favourite videos of yours, Cecil. I adore this movie, and your 'Exploring' did it justice.
Glad to see ya back, Cecil. Hope that you and your family are doing alright, and I am sorry for your loss.
P.S. thanks for picking an awesome film to review. One of the best of the 80's!
Much love. I lost my father when I was in my final year of Law School. Graduating from law school should have been one of the defining points in my life, yet it was brutally overshadowed by the loss of my father.
I am a fan of both the original and the remake. I love the cheesiness of the original along with Steve McQueen and the cool blob effects.
The remake is awesome for the updated Blob effects. Those death scenes and cast were fantastic.
I like that Shawnee Smith wasn't the "tough girl" heroine she only became string because she had no other choice. This wasn't some 5'8 118 pound woman easily defeats a guy that's 6'2 200 pounds
is there a single redeemable quality about the original?

Thank you for the kind words, I genuinely appreciate it.
My condolences on the passing of your father.
This is one of my favorite horror movies and you did an awesome breakdown. It's funny that you mention Flagg being a reference to Stephen King's The Stand, since Shawnee Smith went on to play Julie in The Stand mini-series several years after this.
Let me tell you, watching this movie for the first time in the mid 2000s at the tender age of 11 was quite the experience. And by that I mean it scared the pants off me. I'd seen the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, the Friday series, and the first few Halloween movies, but this creature frightened me far more than any of those killers. The fact the thing was just a huge ball of slime that digested its prey whole and alive was bad enough, but seeing that nothing other than cold temperatures could harm it made it seem unbeatable at the time. It's kind of the same feeling I got when watching Deep Rising, another creature that digested its prey whole and alive, though that one was much easier to kill. Still, this has easily become one of my favorites.
One of the few horror films that actually kills off a kid.
Maximum Overdrive has the murder of an entire little league team.
One kid gets run over by a big steamroller in the outfield! 😄
@@CorbCorbin
Yeah apparently in the extended version of that scene (which has never been released) the steamroll death ends with his head exploding but it would've gotten them an x rating so they cut it.
Yup! A rarity indeed. I can only think of IT, Pet Sematary (as two obvious ones) and Demon Knight off the top of my head. I almost went with Cujo as well but remembered that Stephen King lets the boy live in the movie version.
@@bigkmoviesandgames who can kill a child, tbh a lot of European 70's horror, beware children at play and the house that screamed: hold my beer
Hey, it was the 80s, a simpler time
Brother your story at the end made me cry. I watched this movie with my mom when it came out and we loved it. We talked about it for years and how great it was. It was for me as it was for you a sentimental movie to me. I lost her too and when I saw your Blob video I was way stoked. Thanks for the great memories I got to relive.
One of my faves from the '80s that really is unforgettable once you watched it
Cecil, glad you had more time with him.
I am in the same boat with my mom and I’m terrified to get that call and hear the news. She had a stroke in 2015 and again in 2020. It scares me everyday, but I try to visit her as often as I can and thank god my wife and I made her a grandmother last year.
Wishing you nothing but love and prayers to you and your loved ones.
Thanks so much. Time spent with family and loved ones is never time wasted. Also wishing you the best in return. ^^
I watched it for the first time few years ago, for some reasons I never bothered to do it sooner thinking it was probably boring and not scary, how wrong I was, one of the few impactfull horror movies for me, as cool as "The Thing" (82') and with enough twist to completely caught you off guard, this is brilliant and even the most blasé horror movie fans will agree.
This is one of my favorite Remakes. Alongside The Thing, The Fly, King Kong ('05), Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (70's), Invaders From Mars & Halloween (Rob Zombie). To be honest, I really only like Zombie's Halloween because we got an alternate backstory for Michael & he was ultra violent compared to the other films. I enjoyed your video.
I love Zombie’s remake. Exactly because it is more violent. Similar to my love for the Friday the 13th remake, A faster Jason comes off more violent.
@@Reverend_Nada I did also enjoy the F13 remake. But in retrospect, and speaking as a near 50, decades long Slasher/Horror fan, Halloween "07 & Friday The 13th were two remakes we really didn't need. My Bloody Valentine 3-D was an interesting take on the classic slasher. That remake I could actually support. But redoing iconic Slashers such as Freddy, Jason & Myers just seems like a obvious cash grab by the movie studios. That's just my two cents. I realize nobody asked.
I rented this VHS so many times in the early 90s. This film is the definition of a hidden gem.
I can speak for all of us that we're sorry about your dad...he sounds like he was a good father & grandfather - THAT is something to be proud of. And kudos to you for making such an incedibly well researched video (as usual) & working in the tribute to your dad!
Seeing that concept art does intrigue me about the Rob Zombie version of the Blob. But, I dont think anything would replicate my fantasy of it. The 88 version of the Blob is so fantastic anyways.
It looks fantastic in like a "comic book-style" format, but we just know the final product wouldn't do. Rob Zombie--very much a product of the MTV Generation itself--is a strong utilizer of the "MTV editing", whether he admits it or not. He doesn't do subtle or suspenseful; it's all shaky, dynamic camerawork, jump cuts, and sensory overload. Just imagine blob monsters chasing people to 'Supercharger Heaven" or something, because that's what you'd get. Is it cool? Yeah, probably. But is it scary?
@@hamupinhere Eh, Zombie catches lots of grief, but most of what he does is at least interesting (House of 1000 Corpses is still one of my favorite popcorn films. Is it scary? No, but that misses the point).
A better question would be is it original? For as much as a remake can be, Zombie would bring something inventive to the screen.
It definitely looks metal as hell but I like it as poster/cover art and can't really see it as a film lol
I always feel a sense of pride for loving movies right from the get go, that most people overlooked until it became a cult classic. The Blob is one of my all time favorite movies, right up there with other underrated classics like The Fog, The Thing and so many more
I'm glad your dad was around for those few extra years, especially to meet and spend time with your kid. Im sorry to hear that he passed away. I thoroughly enjoyed this video about the blob. I am a huge fan of this version. Keep up the good work on the videos and I'll keep watching and supporting.
Ok listen, that original video is one I LOVE to watch. I can’t tell you how often I go back to it bc The Blob is one of my favorite movie monsters! Now I have this I can come watch just as often. Quality content right here. 🤌🏼💕

The 78 body snatchers is a classic.
I'm so glad to see this movie has started to get the love it deserves. I always thought it was incredible
I went to the movies to see the remake when I was either 11 or 12 (depending on what part of the year it was released. I can't remember). Loved it then and I love it now. The movie still holds up. It's definitely a classic.
My condolences, man. I lost my dad in my early 20s and it devastated me. Keep the memory of him alive. The first thing you forget is the sound of his voice. These days you might have a video with him talking.
Welcome back Cecil, I'm glad you chose this movie it's one of my favorite remakes, but I got to say I still really want you to review Invasion USA, the greatest Chuck Norris movie of all time.
This film is very important to me... it was released on the date of my birth, in one of my favourite years for film, by one of my favourite directors, starring the son of Donovan with whom i shared a name with because my Dad is a huge fan of 60s psychedelia and 70s rock. My Dad was also a very big fan of horror films. When i was old enough to not freak out at the TV because of the appearance of a frankenstein my Dad started to share that love for horror with me. I was introduced to aliens, an american werewolf in london, nightmare on elm street, the thing. Finally watching these films sparked my love for horror. I when i finally watched this film it had everything i love about horror. This film is brilliant, a great remake, it adds so much and is such a different flavor. I love the blob.
Yes, one of the BEST remakes of all time.
My dad recently passed away in 2020. Its tough since we were so close. I am glad your dad was able to meet your son before he passed away and wish you success with your videos, which are always excellent.
I can't imagine how difficult it was to make this video, be content with it, and finally release it. Sorry to hear about your loss.
The remake was ahead of its time and stills holds up today.
It’s about the 80’s I tell ya! A lot great sci-fi horror films were around that time! It took a lot of work and people were happy in doing the best they could offer.
Wow, a matte painting of the town, that shows that having that kind of set-piece and beautiful rendering by the artist can really come in handy.
I'm so glad that The Blob story was re-worked a bit, and I like that the town was all for the production; this here is a remake I myself can root for (honest characterizations, proper homage to the original, good frights, excellent effects).
Of course, I learned a ton about this film that I had no idea about; loved it!
I'm sorry to hear about your father.
"They wrote the characters in the movie to _not_ be idiots. No one does anything really stupid that causes them to die. He wanted the audience to care about the characters ...."
Fast-forward to 2012 and _Prometheus_ in which stupid characters abound. And I didn't care about a single character in _Alien: Covenant._
Worst is that Scott and Lindelof wrote them that way
Exactly
How to make moern blockbuster movie?
Make them dumb and dumber
Candy Clark running to a phone booth 5 feet away instead of running 20 MILES away was pretty stupid
Sorry about your father, may he rest in peace. I've always loved the Blob remake. My parents rented the 50s version & the remake on the same night when I was a kid. It was great, us just all relaxing & watching these together.
Thank you

I had a big place in my heart for this movie, I learned English by watching movies and tv series in cable as a kid, without subtitles on cinemax, HBO, TMC and Showtime, and the Blob was one of those movies that help me to learn the language.
You are an awesome human being and I know your dad really loved you as we all do here. Thanks for all the passion you put doing all these videos, you make us feel that we are not alone in the world with our love on these movies. I send to you a big hug from a friend from another country, I hope you find peace and strength every day with your loved ones
Watched on tv as a kid, scared the crap out of me, I didn’t trusted my bathroom for a while.
Your closing statement was very beautiful and heartfelt. Thank you for sharing it and I appreciate all the hard work you put into these movies.
You are so welcome
The Blob is a master class in actually subverting your expectations (not the pretentious kind like Ryan “don’t think about it else the plot collapse upon itself” Johnson). Every plot point paid off. The guy you thought would be the protagonist gets killed a few minutes in.
So I started this video and saw the hefty 42min length and was not feeling like I needed THAT much time with the Blob. But without a doubt there is a very genuine love and reverence evident in this video. Not that your other videos lack that, but the catharsis is real and I appreciate you working through hard times and expressing your love for this movie. Very sorry about your dad, your connection to this movie and him reminds me and I’m sure others of some of the same irreplaceable memories
