      He has introduced me to some films for sure but what I have enjoyed more is the spotlight he puts on films most people have never seen or have been forgotten. I feel that gives films that should have been recognized upon release, at least a new life and builds a cult following. So glad he was also featured in the documentary IN SERACH OF DARKNESS.

    Imagine thinking that a McDonald's commercial role is going to be surperior compared to a movie role....

    • @darthizzle
      @darthizzle 3 года назад +20

      Actually not so crazy. A big national commercial, like a McDonalds commercial, can pay a ton, and is the stepping stone for a lot of young actors. Meanwhile, a low budget movie can sometimes hurt a career because it quite likely the script and direction wont be great which means youll end up looking bad in it. It can also be especially harmful for a young actress if shes going to be nude and in particularly sleazy sex scenes as then she can get typecast as basically a b movie bimbo.
      Now, im not sure the boyfriend was right to talk her out of this one, but there def is some merit and national commercials are much bigger than you think for an actors career.

    • @Mate397
      @Mate397 3 года назад

      @@darthizzle I can see your point, though wouldn't a fastfood ad role also cement one in a typecast situation just as much?

    • @darthizzle
      @darthizzle 3 года назад +12

      @@Mate397 doesn't work like that. I've done a little acting and while I never got far in it, I learned a bit how things work. A national commercial gets your face out there and it's also suuuuppper competitive. So if you got it, it's likely you have a decent agent and it also means casting directors may have actually seem your face. But if you did some random low budget horror movie where you spent most of the movie naked, that isn't as good a recommendation. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Many actressesses have made good careers out getting naked in shlocky movies

      Even actors that don't go onto huge success can still ride the wave of a small cult horror movie for their whole career, and make money off of Con appearances. Horror movies, even bad ones, have ridiculously devoted fanbases, as channels like this one prove. That's more than you can say for VW adds.

    Thanks for another great episode, Cecil. I remember seeing this film a long time ago on VHS rental and, being a Corman film, I was not surprised to see the sets and visual effects lifted from other films. The poster art really sold the film too. I didn't know it was leftover art from Galaxy Of Terror. It's great to learn not only how these Corman classics got made, but to learn that James Cameron and the visual effects team took what they learned and brought it to "Aliens". The biggest Alien rip-offs would give the crew the experience to make the best Alien sequel.

  • @erikbjelke4411
    @erikbjelke4411 3 года назад +11

    This is such a fun film. You come into it thinking "Oh, okay, low-budget bad Alien ripoff, I'll probably see lots of boobs." And you certainly won't be disappointed in that regard. But it's a surprisingly effective film for its budget, telling its story well and with surprisingly engaging characters. Even June, who in another film of this mold would be completely self-serving, stupid, evil, or all three, is understandable and even noble in her own way. . . wanting to attempt to communicate with and understand the creature, and then maybe it won't be our enemy (too bad she doesn't know she's in an Alien ripoff, not a Star Trek ripoff).
    You can enjoy it purely on the level of boobs and blood, but this is one of those films that really exemplifies Corman's mission statement: They're not B movies, they're A movies on B budgets.

    Starring a pre-V (Lydia) June Chadwick.
    Corman didn't like mixing genres? Has he even seen his own Battle Beyond the Stars? It's sprinkled with comedy. John Sayles' script is amazingly good.

    I'm eager to see a video from you focused on how Corman's approach to film making changed cinema. Like how his lack of budget stimulated the special effect departement creativity.

    I really question why Roger Corman is so beloved. Yes, if shlocky B movies are your thing then he has an endless supply of them. But I see no evidence that he truly loves cinema. It seems much more like it is a pure business venture to him. Crank out anything as cheaply as possible to maximize profits. To hell with creativity or originality. Most of the interesting things in his movies seem to be in spite of him not because of him. I do appreciate all the great people that worked for him, but everyone in every industry has the story of the crappy place they got their first job. They took it to get their foot in the door then move onto something better.

      Annnd you explained it.
      Are you going to give a first time director a multi-million dollar budget to invoke their vision? Or something to cut their teeth without going broke yourself?
      For any art, someone needs to mind the books or there is no art.
      Corman my have his foibles, but there is a reason so many greats came from his tutelage (he managed to get them paid)..

    Really underrated flick. There's actually some really creative editing, some good writing, and a cool soundtrack. Just a cool, sleazy, vibe. And Dunlap is stunning.

    Great research & Info-Tastic video GBF!! Since I've already run down "Forbidden World," "Galaxy of Terror" and "Saturn 3" (and LOVED them all) are there any other "recommended if you like" R-rated space B-movies of this same era?? (obv grouping "Space Raiders" alongside "Battle Beyond the Stars" & "Starcrash")

    That crazy doctor/scientist character is Fox Harris aka J. Frank Parnell from "Repo Man". I almost didn't even recognize him.
    EDIT: Also, the dude spinning the yo-yo is definitely the "So is it fair to say...?" defense attorney from "The Accused".

    Yes Forbidden World! One of my favorite B-cult horror/sci-fi “Alien” rip-offs”. It’s not bad...Descent FX, story & acting. Pure Roger Corman Schlock! I love it! Personally I think it’s the best of the Corman space quadrilogy.

    I Loved this movie ever since I first seen it on Showtime circa 1986. My Dad had recorded on Vhs for whatever reason. He must've thought it was gonna be like Star Wars, but it ended up being an ALIEN Ripoff. Since I first seen it, I remember the Co-exist/ tentacle impalement scene, & Monster being fed "Cancerous Tumor" or something which afterwards it starts vomiting pink stuff. It was quite the Movie Scene to behold , and the most grossest thing I've ever seen next to John Carpenter's The Thing 1982. Forbidden World aka Mutant reminded me of Alien 1979, & The Thing 1982. I've been a fan of this Forbidden World movie and Roger Corman ever since. It's because of Alien, The Thing, & Forbidden World that I'm such the Sci-Fi/Horror movie fan that I am, a true Horror Film Afficianado!!!! Those were my favorite things, Sci-Fi/Horror movies, Ninja Turtles cartoon, Nintendo Video Games, and WWF Wrestling.

    I legit like this movie (and for more than the copious amounts of nudity) Despite being super low budget, there is a lot of style in the movie. That opening space battle is really cool.
    However, I would be remiss if I didn't mention my laugh out loud moment. Look at the walls of the corridor. Those are styrofoam take-out containers glued to the wall and painted.
