I've owned these headphones for about 8 years. They're hooked up to my TV via optical cable, and I use them for watching movies and playing video games. They're great for when you want it loud, but you don't want to disturb anyone else.
I absolutely love that the sound controls are right there on the headset, I can just reach up and adjust as needed.
If I wear them for over an hour, it does start to hurt on the top of my head and I need to adjust them slightly.
I am completely satisfied with the sound quality. I've used them regularly for all these years, so the sound quality has gone way down. The quality lasted well beyond the 2 year warranty though. I may have sped up their deterioration with such regular use, and I often had it turned up louder than I should have (bad for the ears!).
The padding on the ear pieces has also deteriorated. I find little black flecks on my ears now.
I'm satisfied overall with this item. In fact, I just ordered a new pair. I can't wait to get it so I can experience the quality again at its best. I would recommend these to anyone.
EDIT: Important thing to know if you're using these for the first time - you have to hold down the power button on the headphones for several seconds to turn them on. It didn't tell me this anywhere in the instructions, so I thought they were defective. Hold the button down for 3 seconds, otherwise they won't turn on.
Wow! Thanks for your insight! 🤘
I have a sonos arc connected via optical cable to my Sony Bravia TV. Can I listen to a movie through my Sonos speakers AND the headphones at the same time?
what videogames? supposedly they have 50ms lag
Useful and straight to the point information. Liked and subscribed! Thank you for the great review.
Thanks for the kind words! 🎉🙌
Nice review. I've had these for over 6 years and they are still as good as the day I got them. Nice thing about these is you can buy replacement ear cups for relatively low cost
True! 🙌
If you live in a apartment building (as I am about to) and want to watch movies late at night it must be a nice gadget to have. Thanks for the review!
Your welcome! 🎉
Great video as always friend. I took your advice from a video you did a couple years ago about revisiting movies with a good pair of headphones using a DAC. (Headphones: V-Moda crossfade connected to DAC with 3.5mm which is connected to tv via toslink/PCM out.)
But I have a comment/question. I do have the premium package Netflix that offers spatial audio and what I have found is with some content mainly newer the sound seems fine but with most especially older content that has a spatial audio signal the sound has this forced ,synthetic digital artificial artifacting sound. A fake eco lift in subtle low background sound effects. Such as foot steps or paper shuffling. In some older content it is almost too distracting(recently most evident in the 2005 Scorsese's The Aviator) and I wonder if there's a way you can just disable the spatial audio all together. Because even with using it it doesn't seem to be offering that much of a benefit.
Thanks again for all the entertaining informative videos.
Hmmm…the only way I’ve found to disable Netflix’s Spatial Audio is to keep your TV and AVR to accept Dolby Digital signals and not PCM. It’s like Netflix automatically detects a 2 channel/stereo source and puts in Spatial Audio. 🤷♂️
This is the way. I watch movies at night with an AKG K92 (budget but comfy with nice soundstage, lots of detail) + an Earstudio ES100 MkII USB DAC (Total cost = £127).
Such an upgrade over onboard PC audio. Ealan's point about being able to hear all the dialogue is spot on - with decent headphones there are also zero acoustic issues, you can pretty much hear everything.
Thanks for review
I've been using a pair of Sennheiser RS 180 wireless headphones for years. Great addition to my PC setup for nighttime listening. Spatial audio works well, as do various DTS and Dolby formats with apps/extensions to Windows 10/11. I've compared them to Apple Airpods Max headphones and have a hard time telling the difference for most audio tracks. The Apple headphones are much heavier and use Bluetooth instead of RF.
Can I connect sennheiser 175 to a 4k blu ray player like panasonic ub820 via optical cable? And the 175 automatically recognize Dolby and DTS encodings - as in the Sony MDR-DS6500 model (unavailable new) or i have to set the player to PCM with degradation of the dynamic range?
It only recognizes PCM signals.
Hey, I watch UHD Blu Rays on my Panasonic 4K player as well as play games on the PS5.
Are these headphones a good option for the above? As opposed to say Bluetooth headphones connected to the TVs Bluetooth?
These would be a little better than your standard Bluetooth headphones, yeah, since the main unit transmits a radio frequency instead of Bluetooth. Although nowadays, headphones that support Spatial Audio would probably be the best experience. Like with Apple AirPods Max + AppleTV 4K, or even certain Beats headphones support Spatial Audio. But unfortunately, they’re not cheap. 😭
@@ealanosborneHmm I guess a little better probably doesn’t quite make them worth it then. I think I’ll probably just get a nice pair of headphones, or even the AirPod Pros 2 instead. At the very least I’ll be able to hook those up to my phone and whatnot. Cheers man!
@@1994mammo Yeah! And make sure to get the USB-C AirPods Pro 2, since they will be able to do wireless lossless audio when listening to music. 👍
@@ealanosborne That’s the plan! Thanks for your help 👌🏽
I have paired on RF 175 to my audio receiver/tuner connected to various things (Apple TV, TV Cable Box, etc etc). I bought another one before I saw this video its not a 175 HDR. Can I make the second one work or do I have to return the other and purchase a 175 HDR?
I believe it’s only compatible with the 175 HDR… 🤷♂️
exactly what batteries come with this headphone? Since batteries are consumables, I'm worried if I can just replace them with our regular rechargeable batteries these days...
Thank you for this video.
Oh sure! Batteries are batteries, so if you happen to have rechargeable ones, they can be used as well. It just came with some cheap batteries. 🤷♂️
Can anyone let me know about sound insulation? Not from inside to outside, but from outside to inside 😅. I live in a flatshare, and watching a movie when your flatmate is cooking can get pretty annoying from the kitchen noise.
these should work with a samsung smart tv with optical audio and pc with a jack, right? i presume for audio/movies should be flawless, but how about games on a console connected to tv through hdmi? also, wifi modem interference?
They should work with with just listening to games, yes, but obviously there’s no microphone attached if you needed to communicate while gaming. And I didn’t have any Wi-Fi interference issues, since these headphones run off of radio frequencies, not Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. 👍
i game solo so i dont need a mic, but i am concerned about potential lag and to have a modem a few feet away, read mixxed things online@@ealanosborne
I've been waiting for this review as I thought only specific Apple / Beats products were capable of spatial audio through the Apple TV 4K?
I often listen after hours with wired headphones and would like the best audio experience possible. I already have a pair of Sennheiser Momentum II and was thinking I'd need to "upgrade" to enjoy spatial audio with my streaming services . Will a compatible pair of Air Pods or these specific Sennheiser's offer me something I'm not currently getting......
Eh, not really, if you’re listening to Netflix on your Momentum II headphones, especially if they’re connected to a laptop or PC. Netflix is currently the only streaming platform that offers Spatial Audio for 2 channel listening.
The advantage of connecting Air Pods Pro/Max to an AppleTV 4K is that Apple has its OWN Spatial Audio that automatically works across their compatible devices (iPhones, iPads, Macs), so ANYTHING you watch can be presented in Apple’s Spatial Audio.
These Sennheiser headphones are good for wireless TV watching, since most TV’s don’t have a headphone jack, and/or most wired headphone cables aren’t long enough to reach the couch. 😄
@@ealanosborne you can use your phone for wired headphones w/ the roku app. :) that's how i do it.
Atmos got headphones sonic windows dts all capable of 3d headphones as is Netflix as is sound blaster g6 amp dac Whitch is by far the best option it’s amazing
Does the audio output on the TV need to be switched to PCM every time you use the headphones? That seems a little annoying...
Pretty sure it does so you get the correct output 🤷♂️
Hey i hv a doubt while keeping the atmos spkrs in frnt heights and rear height what should be the distance btw the two to experience the good atmos effect!?! As u said this was the bttr configuration than anyother 4 atmos spkrs set up!!?
It’s not so much a matter of distance between the front and rear heights. I find Atmos effects are more pronounced when the height speakers are 30 degrees above your main listening position.
@@ealanosborne oh great then i can place svs prime elevation in roof als with 30 degree frm main listening 👂 position!?? Is tht ok !?
@@gowthamk5392 yep! 👍
@@ealanosborne thnk u Sir!😀
Like you, I cannot wear over the ear headphones for a very long period of time, certainly not enough to get through even the shortest of movie. I do better with on ear or in the ear headphones though.
I have skullkandy crush I'm wondering if sunheiser are better
🤷♂️
I just bought these and I wanna know can the person sitting next to you still hear the tv??
Mostly no. If your TV has a dual audio output mode, it’s possible to send audio out the TV speakers AND Optical to the headset? Otherwise, it’s meant to be a private listening experience. BUT, the transmitter does support up to 2 headsets, so if you get a 2nd headset, they can hear what you hear as well.
This is the first time I’ve spent more than 150 on a headset so I hope it’s worth it, im primarily getting it for music purposes, also I’m just excited to finally have sennheisers 🔥
Booyah! 🤘
I thought I was the only one with trouble wearing headphones !! Also I’m tempted to try using my JBL quantum 800’s on my tv and see if it does the spatial audio? 🤔
Yeah dude! Try it out…FOR SCIENCE! 🧪
Is there a way I can use on a laptop? How can I do that?
Yeah, you should be able to use the headphones output from your laptop to the 3.5mm aux input of the RS 175. 👍
Can one person have the headphones on and another not, and be able to hear the external sound equipment or does it cancel?
It cancels out the sound from TV speakers if you’re using these headphones since you’ll need to change the output to PCM audio out as it is. The transmitter does support up to 2 headsets, though. 👍
Get an audio jack split dongle
I liked what my Senn HD800 did for movies, but that was just a PCM stereo signal - no idea where the tech is at with these wireless wunderkind from Apple and Sony.
Man I was this close to buying a pair of these but all the digging in my TV settings only shows Digital Dolby or DTS using ARC/eARC and couldn't find whatever PCM is.
Huh…most TVs should have a PCM audio out option… 🤔🤷♂️
@@ealanosborne Is Stereo the same at PCM? Sennheiser's video tutorial says to use PCM or Stereo
@@Connor-qt3cw That’s possible too, yeah. Which TV do you have?
@@ealanosborne A Hisense Roku TV model 55R6107
Is this a TV or a computer monitor you’re talking about
JVC exofield is a good option too, and with dolby atmos 👍
Thanks for the recommendation! 🤘
they better be for $900
I’ve had the JVC’s too for over a year and although overly expensive they work pretty well once you tweak the audio profile to your liking which took a while. The bass is tremendous
I hate lag. I have tried headsets that people say have no lag, only for them to have output lag out the ass. For some reason when I tell people the headset they like have lag, they get mad. Does this headset have output lag? Is it comparable to a wired headset?
I've been using them for about a year and I haven't noticed any kind of lag
Yes they have a small lag as you’re not directly connected to
have you tried Yamaha headphones with 3d sound ?
I have not! 🤔
@@ealanosborne its 2020 model but I found something intersting ability to connect to anysoruce and do a3d with hardware dsp
how are these compared to airpod max spatial audio ?
I mean Spatial Audio is hit and miss, but really cool and immersive when mixed properly. These aren’t built with Spatial Audio tech built in, so I imagine AirPods Max would be a much better experience in that regard.
@@ealanosborne I swear the AirPods max did all that mixing very well...and definitely better than Sony and Bose...but its sad these max headphones dont work after a year ..this is apple responsibility and glitch..
I've bought these amazing headphones back in 2018 and have been using them since, why did they suddenly get a resurgence in reviews in 2023?
🤷♂️
Can you pair two of them together
Yes. One base supports up to two headsets. 👍
In my opinion nothing beats the movie experience like a good set of headphones. I won't watch TV any other way and haven't for many years.
What’s the best one to get wireless ones
What headphones would you recommend in 2023 for the tv and movies
Pretty much these headphones, if you want a more universal way to listen to TV audio.
Beyond that, though, another great way to experience movies and shows is Apple AirPods Max through an AppleTV 4K. Or the new Bose Quiet Comfort offers Spatial audio as well. 🤷♂️
Any thoughts on sony MDR-HW700DS?
@@yazgee991 Eh...maybe. I tend to think "surround sound" headphones are a gimmick, but I haven't experienced the 700DS headphones personally, so I can't say if they're good or bad. But the idea of it is very enticing!
I thought optical can't transmit Dolby Atmos? Only up to 5.1
Not Dolby Atmos. I was testing Netflix’s 2-channel Spatial Audio to see if it made a difference with headphones, not Atmos.
i had Sony L600 Wireless for few months. I had to sell them. Little did I know that they would be impossible to buy again ((( THose are Incredable!
Are you related to someone called Norman by any chance?
Ha! 😄🤘
Man...your TV placement just hurts my soul. OVER the fireplace!? ICANT! Your eyes should be level with 2/3 of the TV
tank you
no bueno haha i think i gonna get uno per moi, muchos dankes!
328 feet you say? Perfect for Usain Bolt.
I've seen him on TV once, and I'd swear he had only w feet
I feel like I am watching a review of a 1996 headset.
Yeah, I wish I could’ve had Hootie & the Blowfish playing in the background, but then RUclips would’ve hit me with a copyright strike 😂
Can't do this voice.
Cool! ♥️
the creepiest review ever
i don't know why but you kinda sound like you're forcing your voice to be deeper
Because…I’m Batman… 🦇
aa battery in 2023 is a joke
Not for long use. They'd be easy to replace when they degrade after many cycles of charge, compared to other type of batteries. (Also cheaper)
no it's a gift
These or the xm5 for a Sony tv??
XM5 🙌
@@ealanosborne have you tried the xm5 with Sony tv? Is there any lag and what does it sound like for movies
@@FonzoCapone I have not tried that combo, but the XM5’s comfort is next level, they’re newer, and have noise cancelling tech.
That being said, I’m not sure about lag, since they are Bluetooth. But I imagine paired with a Sony TV, they’ve addressed that possible issue with proper syncing… 🤷♂️
