Hello everyone welcome to another edition of 1+1, your place for inconvenient truthtelling and mythbusting. Happy new year to everyone, hope everyone had a good Christmas holidays, Hannukah holidays and other celebrations as well as a good New years. My guest tonight is our returning champion Canadian Joe Emersberger, a leading media critic, NGO Critic, and anti-imperialist campaigner, his work has been published at FAIR . org, Znet, Venezuela Analysis, the Canary, and Telesur, we writes at his own substack and is co-author with historian, indie journalist, also media and NGO critic Justin Podur of Anti-Empire podcast, they both collaborated on “Extraordinary Threat : The US Empire, Media, and Twenty Years of coup attempts in Venezuela”.
1.My first question, Joe is this. We’ve seen the biggest Palestine solidarity marches and campaigns the roughly two years now going on three if I have my numbers correct. I’ve been inspired by the acts of compassion and solidarity given to the Palestinians in the occupied territories and historic Palestine, and like the attempt to connect Palestine a victims of imperialism to Congo, Sudan, Haiti, and US colonies. However! We still see people overcompensating and falling into Self-McCarthyism by either saying Israel fell asleep at the wheel meaning, people strongly condemning Palestinian armed resistance which I understand but there’s something sinister when people allow themselves to fall in that trap. And we still see unhinged support for Israel and people wanting to be sensitive to Liberal Zionists and Zionists in general and while I’m not shocked CBC, Globe and Mail, Global, CTV, City News, TVO and the hideous junk journalism of the National Post, Post Media, Bill Maher, Piers Morgan, Triggernometry and other outwardly far-right media and Zionist apologist media I’m stunned that left leaning outlets or people who fashion themselves as leftist bend over backwards to bring cover for Israel’s epic crimes against humanity so before I get to my first official question your thoughts on what I just laid out?
2. Talk about this thread you did on X/Twitter where you called out those left leaning outlets and talk first of why you spoke out on The Nation Magazine?

Talk about Naomi Klein and the Guardian Newspaper which I should state has always been an establishment waste of space and oxygen in Britain often supportive of the once existing Liberal Party and always supportive of the right-wing faction of the Labour Party but! They do provides some space for leftists like Naomi Klein and their own employees from Owen Jones to Paul Mason to Gary Younge, to George Monbiot and Seamus Milne to the Novara Media crowd to provide a left cover from criticism and sell liberal interventionism etc. what about Naomi Klein’s guardian piece and it being edited and her defense of the Guardian got under your skin?
5. This one surprised me the most Arundhati Roy, The New Left Review, edited by leftist historian and journalist and well known anti-war/anti-imperialist campaigner Tariq Ali.
6. And second to last one and you went after the most holiest of left leaning journalists and that was Seymour Hersh! What about Hersh’s claims, arguments and journalism really got under your skin when talking about Israel’s genocidal war on the Indigenous Palestinians?
7. My last question. While one can be angered and dismayed over those individuals and those outlets you mentioned, whose work/journalism covering Israel/Palestine since October 7th do you want to highlight and celebrate and think our audiences should follow, and going forward should there be more massive demonstrations against the corporate press, the western state press, for its complicity in providing cover for Israel’s settler colonialism and again mass crimes against humanity?

Joe talked about the work of Ali Abuninmah a Palestinian-American independent journalist and anti-imperialist who advocates the democratic secular one state solution, solidarity to him over the Swiss authorities harassing him, Germany did the same to him.
