    It's funny that Indycar is now what CART was before the split. Mostly road courses with a few ovals, mostly European drivers, and turbo-charged engines. Although, the engine is a V6 instead of a V8.

      Its still pretty far off from CART, the money involved then was huge compared to now, at one point Newman Haas was spending 20 mil a year on 1 car Menards spent 10 mil just to run 2 cars at Indy only and teams were also starting to experiment with inhouse chassis development.

      basically CART / Champcar won the war. because IRL is now back to the CART era, we can see from the race style and the shape of the car. if only big teams like ganasi racing, penske racing and andreti racing didn't leave CART, then CART would be more interesting because racing isn't only on oval circuits like IRL ... the key is IRL wins in taking over indy 500. if the end is like this for what Tony George broke away? anyway ... IRL is back again like CART style. looks like a power struggle ... and this is very detrimental to the history of the American single-seater race. where indianapolis was the beginning of the single seater / openwheeler car race

      Also, the Panoz chassis used in both the IRL and ChampCar infamously lacked crumple zones. The car was essentially a death trap at high speeds. Bruno Junquiera's injury at Indianapolis in 2005 while driving a Panoz turned many off the chassis, and then Paul Tracy in the DP01 at Long Beach in 2007 ended up breaking his back due to the car not dissipating any energy in a frontal impact was likely the final straw. Panoz chassis were not safe, but they looked good.
      There was actually an oval package developed for the DP01 in the case ChampCar ever went back to ovals, and likely in the case of a merger between the two series, but it was never used.

      Since the creation of the IRL in 1996, Cart/Champcar had begun to lose lots of money and teams due to IRL having the Indy 500. Since 2003 when CART went bust and became Champcar, it was a losing battle and was gonna end at some point.

    • @HighlandCall
      @HighlandCall 6 лет назад +7

      CART had been dead since 2003; Champ Car was run by other people after then.
      Basically it initially died because post-split it had very high ideas about where it was and thought that they could compete against F1 despite not having the biggest event (the Indy 500). They were able to remain at a high level and indeed grow internationally for a few years but after teams started going back to the 500 (Ganassi in 2000, Penske in 2001; lots of other people in 2002) and their Sponsors basically began saying that they'd not sponsor teams any longer unless they ran Indy or the IRL (Penske moved to the IRL in 2002 because Marlboro told them to, and the MSA only let them sponsor in one series) plus the incredibly expensive commitments that they'd made before then they simply didn't have the money to carry on post-2003.
      After then it was bought by a coalition of people but it never really competed and, honestly, it was a shadow of its former self. It never earned any money; they always had to pay for TV time in America and without the 500 they always were going to struggle to find a niche, which they never found. They'd been talking to Indycar for the years since about selling up; they eventually agreed something in 2008. The reason that they ran the split Round 3 thing (the ex-IRL teams in Motegi, the ex-CCWS teams in Long Beach) was because they wanted to keep Long Beach as an event in the future for obvious reasons and so in order to keep the event they had to run it in 2008; but it clashed with Motegi and they couldn't agree an alternate date with Motegi so they ran the double event thing for that year only and sold the Long Beach race as "the last Champ Car race!!" in order to sell tickets. After they unified it took a few years; but now we're in a good place with a strong Indycar series that's going in the right direction.
