    Most of the time I spend listing with my eyes closed as well. What you're calling presence I usually referred to as the breath of the life. When I compare different pressings I usually of course listen to the same song and most times it is easy to pick out which one sounds better sometimes not so easy.
    Then I will focus in on a certain something that stands out in the song Something in one recording that draws your attention to it compare that to other.
    Sounds like electric Warrior is the next one on my list and I will have to make a video on it. I can tell you how it sounds compared to my original Japan press Thanks Jacob I really enjoyed your video. You did a great job, Your friend Ron Beaudry

    This is very close to what I currently do… and I have found I favour the original album to recent presses… so now I understand and that I’m correct. I did not know about the benefits of 45 rpm… now I really must test this out by purchasing one/two…. I need to get that 45 rpm Electric Warrior!!
    Thanks everso for this video 👍👍👍

    • @Rockoli
      @Rockoli  2 года назад

      Yeah, A LOT of represses are cut from digital files today. It’s really hard to beat a true analog original in most cases. There are definitely benefits to cutting records at 45rpm. Downside is it interrupts the flow of some albums and you are getting up to change the record every 15 minutes or so… but the increase in Fidelity can be tremendous. Hopefully they repress Electric Warrior soon! It’s a phenomenal repress!

    Hi Rockoli Records,
    Very interesting - you did a perfect job explaining your thoughts. I would say that it is a combination of a gut feeling and the haptic experience of a record. Sometimes there are also so-called audiophile labels a bit disappointing. Sometimes regular records seem to be very convincing.

    • @Rockoli
      @Rockoli  4 года назад +1

      Thank you! I appreciate that. And I completely agree. The “audiophile” labels don’t always get it right. Rhino records actually does a fantastic job with their reissues but they have their missteps as well. Take care!

  • @TheRecordSpinner

    Awesome observation! When it comes to buying certain pressings in general, I always pay attention to the mastering etchings in the deadwax and I can loosely base how good it will sound from there. For comparing, it’s down to what delivers more power and punch but the differences can be significant if it’s 33 vs 45. The Rocktober pressing has been on my radar for some time and I need to snag it, but after seeing this, I may have to hunt down the MoFi! Awesome video Jacob, all the best.

      Thank you, Dylan! Mastering and dead wax etchings are a great place to start and a great tip! Although I like the MoFi best... You can’t go wrong with the Rhino or the MoFi, both are fantastic 👌Take care!

    I'm with ya, definitely start with the label and go from there. I think the only issue with the best pressing mentality is budget, they can get expensive. But that being said, near the end of 2019 I went to a "Quality over Quantity" mentality with my collection and I'm glad I did. Side note, my copy of MoFi's Electric Warrior should be here soon, so I'm glad to hear it's as nice as I'd hoped ;)

    • @Rockoli
      @Rockoli  4 года назад +1

      Yep, I started watching Ron Beaudry on his channel years ago and he convinced me to go the ‘quality over quantity’ route and I’m so thankful. I was starting get dissatisfied with the record collecting hobby as a lot of the records I was buying were just horrible quality. Once I started learning about the differences in pressings/mastering/sources it really changed my relationship with the hobby and I get much more enjoyment out of collecting. And I hope you are as pleased as I am once your copy arrives! Take care!

    I bought MY copy of "Electric Warrior" during the early-mid 1970's - (was his current album, back then)
    Have always treasured it, as it was released on the "FLY" label - I bought the album for "Jeepster" specifically
    Label = Fly/Cube one side, "Finn & Bolan" photo' on the other side - (Bought from "Downtown Records", Ilford)
    Never had it evaluated, as like ALL my Led Zeppelin albums, they were "current releases".
    Wasn't until about 1989 (over here, England UK), that C.D's took-over & vinyl album sales "died".
    Nonetheless, I kept my vinyl albums, all of them, except for "Rainbow Rising" which I gave to my Bass-player
    Fascinates me that vinyl DID make a comeback & folks ARE euphoric about it.
    One regret I have, is that I bought a 'then current' Queen single (early, pre-"Bohemian.R") - and....well....
    The 'A' side & 'B' sides each had the "wrong" labels on (upon release) - it was circa 1974ish, or early '75
    Me being still a kid, I scrawled it out (felt-pen) & re-wrote the correct sides with coloured labels on it !!!!
    Ain't hindsight a wonderful thing, eh ?
    That happened BEFORE the then 'new craze' (2-yrs later), of "Vinyl 12 inch singles"
    I bought the Rolling Stones "Miss You" on Pink 12-inch vinyl & also "The Motors" AIRPORT on 12-inch BLUE
    Seemed like a right-gimmick at the time !!!!!
    (But I wuz jusr a hardcore album-buyer at heart)

    My only thought is did the tapes survive decades in storage, and does the new pressing sound half way decent.

    • @Rockoli
      @Rockoli  3 года назад +1

      That’s a good question. I wish MoFi was more transparent on their source. From what I understand, when it says, “mobile fidelity sound lab” on the top banner (as opposed to “original master recording”) it means they didn’t use the original master tapes. However, I think the MoFi pressing of Electric Warrior sounds phenomenal.

      @@Rockoli Try a copy of MoFi's pressing of Lynyrd Skynyrd - Street Survivors album. It's part of their silver lable series and they did a good job on mastering it.

    As for Electric Warrior, many express a preference for the Rhino over the MFSL. I have yet to get my copy but I doubt Ill prefer it. The Porky cut is something I might consider better however as both the Rhino and MFSL most likely use the US tape dub as opposed to the Porky which uses the UK original tape, going back to what you said about country of origin pressings.

    • @Rockoli
      @Rockoli  4 года назад +1

      The hype-sticker on the Rhino claims that it is “cut from the original master tapes” (The phrase we like to hear). But I’ve heard that that’s not true. I wonder if Micheal Fremer knows? He’s really good at getting direct information from those involved in the process. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts when you receive your copy.

    • @leon9021
      @leon9021 4 года назад

      @@Rockoli Yes, Kevin Gray also states its the original tape. My assumption is that they are regarding the first US tape as an original, because it is the first in the US after all. But if you look closely you will see your MFSL copy does not have Original Master Recording at the top banner like usual, because they are not comfortable advertising their product as using the original tape. It would seem very strange if Rhino got the UK tape for their 25$ reissue while MFSL does not for their 50$ version just a few years later.
      But if you can ask Fremer that might give great insight, my guess is that the UK tapes are long lost.
      Ill be sure to write a review on Discogs and maybe here too when I hear mine.

    • @Rockoli
      @Rockoli  4 года назад +1

      @@leon9021 If that’s true, that’s pretty shady of Rhino to advertise it in that way. Technically correct but misleading. I did notice the MFSL banner instead of OMR. If what you’re saying is true, I have to give credit to MoFi for being a bit more transparent regarding the source used.

  • @leon9021

    When comparing pressings I usually just listen to a part of a track, a whole song or side is typically too long to recall well enough. Drums are the most revealing instrument I find.
    If I want to get really down and dirt Ill needledrop both records and compare on the fly with my PC after leveling the music as best I can.

    • @Rockoli
      @Rockoli  4 года назад +1

      Another great point I should have touched on! I don’t always listen to the entire track first but a specific section. And I’ve never done a computer analysis when comparing, but I know it’s a tool a lot of folks use. I’d be interested in learning how for sure.

      @@Rockoli Well, I simply run some RCA cables from my Amp to a 3.5mm into the back of my PC and record the signal in Audacity (free and popular software). Having a dedicated ADC and DAC is of course better and can be had cheaply, they often use the same chips in 50 - 1000$ converters, but even the PCs built in works to reveal the differences.

    Those so-called "chain exclusive" reissues (and usually on colored vinyl) being touted at big box chains are so glaringly bad that they make the comparison process so easy! But alas, the average record-collecting dimwit just buys 'em blind simply because it's on their beloved vinyl format. I used to do LP vs. CD comparisons just for personal knowledge but there were only a handful of albums, particularly in the 80's, where one format sounded better than the other. More vinyl collectors should watch this, I mean just from the title alone it ought to plant the seed to become better consumers and collectors.

    • @Rockoli
      @Rockoli  4 года назад +2

      I used to be a record collecting “dimwit” myself, and I almost gave up on the hobby due to my ignorance regarding pressings. I assumed all records were created equal and found myself very disappointed by the sound on the records I was buying when I first started. But once I started learning about pressing quality, mastering, analog versus digital, master tapes, etc. It completely changed how I approached collecting and my satisfaction with the hobby grew tremendously. These videos are my way of warning others to avoid the mistakes I made and seek better sound. Cheers!

    The 45RPM Flip book example is not analogous. Just because the lathe platter is spinning faster doesnt mean the cutter head is adding more information to the disc, like one adds more pages to a flipbook animation.
    45 RPM certainly doesnt sound worse if anything, its only positive in regards to sonics. But there are a few problems when we compare the two. Most 45RPM reissues do not have the same mastering as other 33 counterparts, making comparisons unfair to begin with. Also, even if they do share masterings in few cases like Fleetwood Mac Rumours Kevin and Hoffman remaster, the 45 version is cut louder. If one does not compensate for this my normalizing the audio signals you will again put the 45 in an advantage as louder can easily be perceived as better in every regard, detail, soundstage, dynamics, you name it. But you can measure some things like dynamics and show that this is clearly not the case, and if you ask Hoffman himself he will confirm in saying that the 33 sounds just the same on a well tracking deck. Balance the audio for both and the only difference might be a slightly louder noise floor on the 33 which given a good pressing and loud music shouldnt matter at all.
    The reason why many companies do it, despite what they hype about sound, is because of copyright reasons. It is much easier to get rights to make a 45RPM record and press more copies in the future.

    • @Rockoli
      @Rockoli  4 года назад +1

      You bring up a lot of good points! Volume of each pressing should be taken into consideration. “Louder” is easily perceived as “better” in short listenings. I had someone compare it to the Pepsi Challenge trick (Sweeter is perceived as better with little sips). I failed to mentioned this in the video. The flip book analogy is how it was explained to me but I am definitely not an expert on the matter. Just sharing my thoughts and opinion. You also make a great point about 45rpm being easier for labels to get the rights to and why they use it over 33rpm. So it makes sense that labels would generate hype around 45rpm. So that should be taken into consideration as well. All great points 👏
