Late-night skate parties at the park with Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Bad Religion, Minor Threat, and so many other great bands blasting on the boombox. We were high on life and lucky to be teenagers in the '90s. To all you end of the road GenXers out there, may the memories of stolen Mad Dog 2020, Zimas, dad's cheap beer, and your older brother's hidden stash of weed bring a warm smile to your face as this song plays.
Elastica are one of those bands that I've appreciated more as time has gone on.. Their debut was fantastic and I curse myself that I didn't really appreciate it more at the time... It sounds timeless.
That's been me my whole life, I feel as if I always discover bands 10 years or more after their prime. Lately I've even been getting into music made long before I was even born, like 50s rock.
This has to be one of my FAVORITE Elastica songs!!! It was a GREAT song when it first came out and has aged well. This song and the ENTIRE album on which it appears is flawless. Btw, I always loved Justine's hair cut in this video. Thanks for the memories!!!
It is my favourite song of theirs, I think. What a great band, what an album. So glad that it finally is on Spotify. And: So many years later, I'm still mesmerized when I see the video. Her eyes, her haircut, the attitude, the vibe she sends.
i really like this. I don't recall ever hearing it before and I listened to a lot music in those years, but I think it came out the year I was basically homeless and I missed a lot. Her voice really compliments the melancholy nature of the song
The funny thing is that back then it was not even a great song. But by today's standards, it's a master piece. Some songs just take their sweet time maturing...
Then again, it strikes some people differently. Don't think I ever heard it before it came over the work tannoy today -- and I fell instantly. Taste is a funny thing, innit?
Muchas gracias, Sylwia, para ti también. Me encanta Elastica!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
I was going to say...this sounds exactly like No More Heroes. Did Elastica just rework obvious melodic variations on classic songs into something different? Seems like all their big hits were basically ripoffs.
@103735952550804428024 sorry for being 7 months behind , but not only true she is a complete n utter thumper , a devout evangelist got her off the brown though , she was and perhaps is still is stunning
@notformebeaky Why the derogatory term ? Also, if it gets one off a terrible drug habit it's not sad. Perhaps it'll help preserve her life and who knows maybe elastica will perform in future yet. Once I was introduced to a man and next time I asked of him he'd died to do with heroin.
I interviewed Hgh Cornwell years ago, and I asked him about this track, he said that he took it as a compliment/tribute that they'd copied his song. He received a phone call from his lawyers asking him if he was aware of the song and to not worry ebcause they'd "sorted everything" and he was paid royalties, even though he never asked for or wanted them. Sad.
Legally, maybe. Technically, every artist who is influenced by another artist steals indirectly via their own output. A cover by someone else is simply the highest form of showing appreciation for another artist's influence.
I just love this song and the band... The bass line is just classic. Thumpin drum beat. Its just the old fashioned wall of sound. And on a sexist note... Who is the elfin redhead on rhythm... Very cute and a great player.. Luvvem...
My fav Elastica song! Yeah that intro arpegio is a rip but it's great! Love the lyrics and backstory. I could see someone doing a slower version on accoustic.
I'm 48 and was a young man when this band was peaking and I was unaware of them.Very disappointed in myself!I've been playing all there stuff and cannot believe how great they are.
A friend told me that he thinks I sound like this band. I've never heard this band, but I'm actually really honored! This girl has a really great voice!

It was awesome being young in the 90s!
It really was. Brit pop and the rave scene 😍

So "in love" with Justine and her image, 90's brit coolness at its best.

Problem for them is they just weren’t that good live.

another underated song
Wow, this has aged so so well. Love 90's, loved them when I was living them, and still do now.
Almost as good as No More Heroes by the Stranglers who they have blatantly ripped off.
I saw them play back in '95 when they were in So. Cal. They were a great live band!
Holy crap the two singers are gorgeous !!!!
I appreciate this now,in fact I love it - it’s just effortlessly timeless and just so damn cool and natural.
I couldn’t agree more. Well said.
How beautiful is this singer
Great music man
Its shame this band couldn't stay together and that I always discover great bands years after they break up

Got it first time around, not many did, glad I was one of them
I think I still have this song on cassette somewhere
Cracking song! 👏👏👏 It sounds a lot like The Stranglers No More Hero’s.
@Matthew Leslie Wow I did not know that! 😳 Appreciate that info! 👍
I love it when get up and give it big licks natty riffs and super driven ascending guitars. ......landmark anthem. ...
One of the best songs I've ever heard
it's ok, but it was better in 1977 when the Stranglers wrote it
Whatever happened to Leon Trotsky?
And Sancho Panza?
So crushing in the bass player.
this was a bad ass album.
This song humbles me.
When I was a teen this is 1 of the bands that got me moving forward in music today
Very underrated band - love them
Love the twin guitar sound, great after all this years.

JUST A MASTERPIECE!!

I was going to say...this sounds exactly like No More Heroes. Did Elastica just rework obvious melodic variations on classic songs into something different? Seems like all their big hits were basically ripoffs.
They had to pay The Stragglers a portion of the royalties for this and Wire for "Connection".
The opening has a definite grunge feel too , nirvana probably
Stranglers settled out of court and get a co writing credit on the record.
this album is a m a z i n g.
start to finish... every song could be a hit single that carry's its own album. i am serious.
Need a deluxe reissue of this album!
Their B sides and unreleased tracks are amazing too. "The other side", Pussycat" "Gloria" or "In the city" particularly.
I think they reissued this one last year! (:
"If I can't be a star I won't get out of bed" - my sentiments exactly!
I used to love this at uni 20 years ago.

This is a song!
I want to say how the lyrics are eternal; but really, I just want to say this is a song!
The guitars from about two-and-a-half minutes in make me want to burst with joy and break down and cry and start a revolution.
