  • This baby bird, a jackdaw fledgling, we found in front of our house. Thank you Dierenambulance Den Haag - dierenambulancedenhaag.nl/ for the rescue!
During a pleasant mid-afternoon with some shelter given by a car, we saw a tiny jackdaw fledgling in front of our house. We made the decision to let the fledgling bird alone after noticing the jackdaw pair, the parents, perched on the house and in the trees. But when we went back many hours later, we discovered the poor bird still there, clearly deteriorating. It became obvious that the jackdaw fledgling would not survive the night without assistance as the sun fell and cats started to roam the streets.
If we did not take action, this jackdaw baby bird would not have survived the night. So we moved the young bird to our back garden, where his parents also come to get bread every day. Their nest is up on the rooftops. Anyway, the poor little jackdaw, many call them crows, but they are called jackdaws, was not looking great. He survived the night though and I think he may have eaten some bread crumbs, but then again he seems very weak.
To ensure the chicks safety, we carefully relocated the young bird to our back garden, a familiar place where its parents regularly come to feed on bread. Since their nest is situated on the rooftops, we believed this arrangement would increase the chances of the jackdaws survival. Nevertheless, the little jackdaw, often mistaken for crows but distinct in its own right, appeared in poor condition. Remarkably, it managed to endure the night, in our makeshift nest, potentially consuming some bread crumbs, but its weakness was still evident.
“Jackdaws are two species of bird in the genus Coloeus closely related to, but generally smaller than, crows and ravens (Corvus).” - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackdaw
To be clear, these are ‘western jackdaws’ -
“The western jackdaw (Coloeus monedula), also known as the Eurasian jackdaw, the European jackdaw, or simply the jackdaw, is a passerine bird in the crow family.” See:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western...
This morning, when the jackdaws visited for their daily bread, the young bird emitted a few cries, though its feebleness made it uncertain if it could sustain itself. We can only wait and hope, entrusting its fate to a higher power. While we will do our utmost to assist, it is generally advisable to leave fledgling birds outside, where their parents can locate them. In theory, the parents will continue to nourish and protect them from potential threats. The jackdaw fledgling would not survive the night without assistance, it became evident as the sun fell and cats started to roam the streets.

Regrettably, the young jackdaw fledged prematurely and is in a critical condition. In the end, we called the animal rescue and they will come pick up this young, weak bird. They came and got the jackdaw and will nourish him back to be fit again! Dierenambulance Den Haag, thank you!
