@Mrfairchap 'The Shadows have been cited as a major influence on many guitarists, including Brian May, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Andy Summers, Ritchie Blackmore, David Gilmour, Tommy Emmanuel, Andy Powell and Tony Iommi.' en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shadows#:~:text=The%20Shadows%20have%20been%20cited,Andy%20Powell%20and%20Tony%20Iommi.
@Mrfairchapapart from John Lennon, who said that without the Shadows there would have been no Beatles, and Mark Knopfler, who learnt from Hank Marvin. Immense respect is due to the Blues, but denigrating the Shadows doesn't help people to develop that respect. You don't increase regard for people by pulling others down.
I like both. The shadows and the beatles. The shadows came first, and were a bloody good influence on the beatles. The sharp suits, even influenced an instrumental from them. But the beatles did develop popular music. I love them both. The shadows do deserve alot more credit though.
I'm a beatles fan but when I discovered the shadows and their style I thought that could do good vocals and yes they deserve so much respect. However if comparing Harrison and Marvin, Hank Marvin is the real guitar Master
Hank is such an underrated guitarist. He's been in vids here and there but never truly recognised, inspired so many. The Shadows band as a whole did even!
I grew up listening to Cliff Richard and the Shadows when they started back in 1958 together. The Shadows then were called the Drifters but had to change the name of the group to the Shadows because there was already a group called the Drifters in the USA. As you said Hank Marvin was an influence on many other guitarists which included George Harrison and John Lennon of the Beatles to such an extent that John Lennon and George Harrison composed the instrumental 'Cry for a Shadow' on the German record label Polydor before they returned to the UK from Germany. I love the Beatles music also and have all their albums as well as a collection of many Shadows albums including Cliff Richard and the Shadows albums.
C'mon now, it's all about the MUSIC! Who cares about clothes and style! It's one of the greatest tunes ever recorded, way ahead its time, brilliantly played and influential; what more can you ask for?
I have them on a CD and love playing this CD at the rate of deafening. The number of times I have stopped at a red light to see people moving to the music is amazing. Always loved their music. 19/07/2024
Eammon Andrews died 25 years ago, in November 1987, he was actually born in Dublin, Ireland, but had worked with the BBC for over 25 years before he died.
Had Jet and Tony lived would the first Shadows section at the Reunion Concert in 2009 have been the Original Fantastic Four no disrespect to Brian Bennett
Look at the bass player starting 0:50 and notice he LIFTS the neck of the bass up a bit as he spins...now deconstruct,,,he did this because he must have hit the guitarist in the head during rehearsal!!!!
The Amazing Tony Meehan, who got me started on Drums R I P Tony.
RIP Jet Harris, i'll miss seeing you around.
i love the guitars, the playing and the awesome clothes!
There was life in the UK rock scene before The Beatles.
The Shadows don't get the respect they deserve.
But not before the Blues
Here, here.
