Even if something is beneficial, is it the best idea to have it? Some scientists look into embryonic stem sells for treating diseases. It actually has problems like causing cancer, but if that were to work, would we do something immoral, because it's beneficial to us?

The very essence of morality is about it being beneficial. Nothing can be beneficial and immoral at the same time. If we feel it is immoral than there are side effects we expect to find, which are more important.
As a teen I used to struggle with guilt over wet dreams/nocturnal emissions. I think St. Augustine and a book on Moral theology I used to refer to would call ejaculation "pollution." So church teaching is definitely a mixed bag when it comes to positivity about sexuality and the human body doing what it does .
Just a couple questions for consideration:
1) Couldn't you use masturbation as a means of preventing the inconvenience of wet dreams? The extra laundry, especially if it happens 2, 3 or 4 times in a week is a drag.
2) Can't pleasure have multiple purposes? In marriage, the unitive and the procreative, but in other circumstances just pleasure? Sort of like how we go for a massage in order to address physical tension or injuries.
In conclusion, I think Christopher West's approach to discussing Church teaching on sex is an important development in how Catholicism has handled this topic in the past. Respect and openness is important as opposed to shame, guilt, and repression. I've had the suspicion (and I could be wrong) that the Church abuse crisis has a lot to do with sexual repression leading to psychosexual disorders among clergy.
Your comments make alot of sense. So here's my two cents:
To your 1st question I'll say, In my teens and early twenties I engaged in intense prayer and penance and for like 10 years never had night emissions then in my late twenties I slacked and experienced it for a bit. I think this means that even the night emissions are 'cos of our weakness due to our fallen nature. In the begining it was not so. Thus through grace it can be overcome.
To question 2 I say, of course. Pleasure is an important part of the equation. Church teaching has always affirmed it. The problem comes when the we try, in any way to separate it from the other two purposes. All three purposes should be present as willed by God.
Then about your conclusion: During the height of the priest sex abuse scandal a protestant minister surprisingly came out condemning the argument that celibacy was unnatural and was the cause of psycho-sexual problems. He said that there were as much cases of abuse among non-catholic clergy, most of whom were married and wondered why no one was talking about it. He also says that in schools the number of teachers with teens was disgusting but somehow it seemed less important 'cos: A, they were hetero, and B, the priests were being held to a higher standard. He did not think that it was necessarily a conscious decision buy society somehow fell into that position by default.

1) Masturbation is inherently disordered and a grave matter. Wet dreams and extra laundries sure are inconvenient but that's life. Life is inconvenient... But it is only experienced insofar as we reject the reality of this fallen world, including ourselves and the plan which God has for us.
Following the Word of God can never be wrong, because God is truth. Which means that there is never an acceptable excuse to masturbate.
2) Pleasure for the sake of pleasure is Hedonism. Pleasure as a goal, in of itself, is disordered and selfish. True love, where we will the good of the other and, in the confines of sacred matrimony is expressed rightly when the spouses seek to honor and love the other person for the sake of the dignity of their person's rather than as a means to "please one's self".
True love and pleasure is that which is reached when one seeks to do good of the other, for their own sake, for their honor's and dignity's sake.

How are you defining masturbation in this video? That may help answer some of these following questions... Are you defining as simply the touching of ones self for sexual pleasure? Touching ones self in isolation for sexual pleasure? Would you use a different word for couples who use touching of self in marriage for sexual pleasure while together & for sexual arousal of the other? I hear conversation in the video concerning lust fueled, addictive/habitual, hidden from another, etc. acts, but is that all you are addressing or all forms of touching oneself for sexual pleasure. Is there room for the couple struggling with infertility to masturbate if necessary for a sample to be given? Is there room for the pelvic floor patient recovering from anxiety/fear/trauma to use dilators/trainers with herself as instructed by therapist in order to relax & desensitize vaginal muscles so they are able to engage in penetrative intercourse with their spouse (this isn't always recommended to do with spouse present at first because of past traumas). Hi. I am familiar with some of the questions and I can tell you my understanding on it, but not with all.
I know the Church allows for foreplay, thus sexual touching and pleasurable manipulation of the genitals as a preparation for normal intercourse is accepted (the mutual self-giving and openness to life is there), while it is not accepted if it doesn't lead to normal intercourse (mutual masturbation or simply exhibitionistic masturbation, or leading to a sexual act which by its nature is closed to the production of life such as anal or oral sex).
I'm not familiar with dilators, but I think they shouldn't be a problem if they are not vibrators, that is, they are not intended to produce sexual pleasure or arousal, just distension. If such a consequence results accidentally, it is not sinful, since it was not intended, just like when some people have orgasms from eating or as a paradoxical reaction to fear, or some people have sexomnia.
About the sample due to fertility issues, masturbation is not a requirement, since there are other ways to obtain the sample: for instance, some have suggested that you can poke holes on a condom and have sex which is open to life yet keep some semen retained for lab purposes (which barely needs a drop), the semen can be collected from the epididymis with a needle (unpleasant, but can be done with anesthesia), or, for simple morphological exploration, a fresh sample collected straight from the woman's vagina can be used (this is, in fact, the original way of studying semen. Thank you Leewenhoek!).
Finally, the Catechism itself, if I remember well, has a definition for masturbation. It is the voluntary manipulation of the genitals with the intention to derive sexual pleasure (the pleasure is the goal). It is different from foreplay, in which there is such manipulation, but the goal is coitus.
Professional medical literature states regular periodic ejaculations indeed can prevent prostate cancer or even prevent that cancer from growing worse such as lethal metastasis.
Likewise, old age ED can be in certain cases remedied by masturbation if intercourse ejaculation is no longer possible due to delayed impossible orgasm.
With prostate cancer, the male victim of that dreadful disease also needs to ejaculate to see if blood is expelled, if there is abnormal semen and fluid, and if there are adverse or abnormal symptoms from ejaculation. If intercourse ejaculation isn’t possible to figure out medical symptoms and dysfunctions like ED, then only masturbation resort might be the only next option. When all these medical reasons exist, then masturbation ought not be regarded as a mortal sin. This is more true if the masturbation is detached from lustful self-pleasure. The church therefore needs to deal with and announce the realities of prostate cancer, ED, and old age male potency issues to allow relaxation of rigid moral theology determined in the past centuries.
God wonderfully gave humans a brain that is designed to be able to discover new facts, realities, and truths. The human brain is constant unlocking health and psychological mysteries, creating cures, new medicines, and alleviating human pain and suffering from diseases, which includes male ED and related issues of lost ejaculatory function. This isn’t the main focus of the talk, and I can appreciate the desire to share these perspectives…but from my experience nocturnal emissions are not a guarantee. I have never had one. So I have to ask because I'm curious as to your thoughts you said we can partake in the benefits to our body without committing or giving in to the sin. Is Masturbation with out climax [ edging ] still partaking in the sin? Not being aided by pornography or out of martial sexualization [ I am 33 and totally virgin waiting till I am married ]. The men in my family on both sides have a history of prostate cancer and several in recent years and I have read those studies and would partake for the purpose of my health not to be consumed by the pleasure. My desire it my remain healthy not the pleasure. At times yes the pleasure is a nice side benefit to me but I'm not a slave to it and I'm not addicted in seeking it. Why would you flee to using masturbation as a stress reliever instead of just turning to God and rest in His presence, and let Him take all of your stress and yokes? With prayer and a strong bond with the Spirit you don't need masturbation as stress relief, even if it is without lust. Also we are called to honour our bodies as a living sacrifice as His Spirit dwells within us.
I experienced this myself. Even if you can masturbate without lust you are still misusing your body the way God intended it for. He did implemented noctornal emissions in our nature for a reason, so we really don't need masturbation. Masturbating without lust is a way of trying to justify something that cannot be justified and it never works, I can know!
@@jasperthedisciple nope, sorry - prayer doesn't work in my case - maybe God doesn't want to relieve me from stress and the burden I'm carrying on my shoulders - sometimes I think it's the cross that I'm called to carry - but I don't want to carry it so if prayer doesn't relieve the stress it's absolutely natural for me that anything that helps and it doesn't hurt anybody is ok to use.

Regarding your last sentence: it may seem youre not hurting anyone if you do it, but you are certainly hurting yourself spiritually even you don't feel it. It may also have negative sexual consequences in your future marriage.

Sometimes prayer is not enaugh. Thats why we have antidepressants, anestetics, anxiolitics. Prayer can't solve all problems with pain. Otherwise we would operate people with prayer. It does not work this way.

There is no such thing as addiction.
That said, a key to overcoming self-abuse is being open to God's grace. This appears to be possible with the self-talk repetition of "I distrust myself." I likely would help to add "I trust in God alone" after this. Another possibility is cold showers or other mortification methods. I have had experience with both of these and both are effective provided that you are committed to virtue.
It is axiomatic that any purposeful action which excites a person's flesh is almost certainly sinful. If it isn't sinful in itself, it does have a tendency to weaken one's will - even with the above methods being used.

If you look at books on sex and marriage written before about 1950 and especially in the late 1800s, you will find more truth than today on this topic. These books pretty much universally say that masturbation is bad, and that our bodies are healthiest when we don't interfere with them sexually. Marriage is good but these books counsel that marriage isn't just for sex and that excess should be avoided. Having an orgasm is never a medical necessity.

There is a big difference between masturbation and sexual intercourse. Excessive masturbation (and especially porn use) could also harm one's sexual ability by not providing accurate feedback for improvement and create false expectations.
I'd say that both partners in a marriage who've abstained from sex until marriage should go in with the expectation to spend years mastering sexual intercourse and to get started with the beginner mindset and have low expectations in the beginning. The journey of mastery together of working through issues, improving communication, and advancing in sexual skill is part of the fun, in my opinion. :)

I don't think you listened to what he said. You don't have to be a medical professional to read a study and make an informed decision in opinion. People tend to listen to the professionals and not look at a study. Masturbation is medically harming people's brains. It glorifies instant gratification. What does that do to your brain? Well, what happens is the endorphins and overload the circuits and men are ending up with earlier and earlier erectile dysfunction. When you've flooded the system more and more things have to be done to reach the same climax. When you have sex with someone you love to give them pleasure or to try to conceive a child, you don't just get overloaded for self gratification. You may get some dopamine from self gratification, but the dopamine you get from pleasing your partner or working together for a common goal ie life, the dopamine spreads farther through the brain and lasts longer. The endorphins calm stress and relieve pain in the short term, but doing only for yourself not goes to only one area in the brain thereby numbing the effect. Now, in some men, this may happen relatively quickly, and some men may not experience it for many years. But masturbation becomes masturbation with porn, the porn has to intensify and the things you do must intensify to reach the same climax, eventually the phallus becomes numb. Can you imagine not being able to reach a climax and having a gf who all she wants is to get you there. I know a man suffering from this and if there's one, there are many. I would wager, many of them are not willing to talk about it because it feels like emasculation. But if they'd only talk about it ,maybe a doctor, diet, or medication could help. Maybe something as easy as a supplement is all they need. And mindfulness.
