- In this week’s video from Fr. Mike, he discusses why confessing the same sins over and over isn’t entirely a bad thing. He also offers some ways we can make our confessions more effective in helping us avoid those same sins in the future. The practice of naming, confessing, and renouncing our sins in Jesus’ name before, during, or after confession is one suggestion Fr. Mike shares. He also encourages us to move past simply wanting forgiveness and into having true repentance so we can experience deep conversion and freedom.

If you want to be saved and go to heaven, why not just read and believe the gospel of your salvation?

In the old testiment, remission of sins required death. Romans 5:10. Something, or someone had to die, because the wages of sin is death.
Asking, praying, walking the isle, forgiving others to be forgiven, or rubbing rosery beads doesnt work because you cant work for a free gift, and this gift is unconditional.
Jesus who knew no sin was made sin for you. He made peace through the blood of his cross. He was made THE perfect, living sacrifice for ALL your sins.
2Corinthians 5:18,19, Ephesians 1:7; 2:15, Colossians 1:20.
Jesus isn't mad at you. He loves you. He litterally loved you to death. He reconciled himself to you, me, and the world.
Sin is not seperating you from God on this side of the cross, your lack of faith is.
Your sin debt was owed, and that sin debt was paid IN FULL by the blood and death of Jesus Christ.
You dont need Jesus to atone for your sins, because it already happened wether you believe it or not.
You dont need Jesus to be buried because it already happened wether you believe it or not.
You dont need Jesus to raise again three days later because it already happened wether you believe it or not.

I'm a born-again Christian I repent everyday. I used to be Catholic I grew up Catholic and my family's Catholic and the Lord saved me from Catholicism. you do not confess your sins to a man and you call no man father. God is our Father in heaven and Jesus Christ is our savior and our advocate. I confess my sins only to God in Jesus' name and to no one else. I don't need a man to absolve me of my sins and tell me if I say five hail Marys and ten our fathers that my sin is forgiven even when I was young I thought that was ridiculous

I have actually always feared that my returning to one sin is evidence that I care for it more than the Lord. This helped a lot Father.
it is due to self management skills that need to be developed.
This whole religious part is confusing the heck out of people.
sin is another word for doing stuff that hurts ourselves and hurts others.
It is best avoided always.

@@Onlinesully That's not exactly what sin is as it is bigger than simply hurting if that make sense. Sin is an act that is a trangression of God's law. When you are sinning, that mean you are not aligned with God's will. God wants us to be in communion with him, to have a relationship with him and sinning interfere with that relationship. Hence, religion is not adding complexity, it's adding extra meaning to ones action!

Even though I understand and I lived with repurcussion of my past sinning(thus helping me understand even more I guess), it doesn't mean I don't anymore... I watched that video exactly because I was finding myself confessing the same sin. I repent though... each time.

We all fall short. Drinking is a falling short. Cursing is falling short. Getting angry and yelling while saying nasty things is falling short.
Drinking is not falling short. Getting drunk is. Jesus changed water into wine at the wedding feast of Cana. Jesus and the disciples shared bread and wine at the last supper. Drinking is not a sin...getting inebriated is because that is when your thinking gets cloudy.
Thanks for the video Father Mike! I used to struggle with pornography addiction, but have completely stopped. However, I still am lustful in other ways. I’ve always felt confession gives me strength and will power.

2. Run to confession or riht now to jesus then get to confession asap always
3. Go to mass everyday ...lol yes everyday or 2x a week more than normal...
4. Adoration 2x a minth or more
5, rosary alot.....
6 fast more...
7. Use novenas ...
8. Get rid of tech at night if it tempts you
9. Pray at times u tempted.. like if u always fall at 9pm avoidn thise times
10. Get a spiritual dorector or priest.. if u can find one dont bother orver worked priests maybe a retired one
11. Get into a support group
12. Get blessed sapulchers salt against demons
13. Holw water or blessing fron priest of home
14. Blessed statues mary ...
14a Read everything on st ignatiusspiritual exercises great work...
15.. humility humiliity our pride wants to sin pleasure
U dint have to do all these but some combos help
The main issue is get sacramemts intomyour soul and pray lords prayer when mentally tempted

I believe that if someone can be annoyed with your words . No matter what race , gender etc that person who is listening to you. I sincerely believe that he/she doesnt love humans or follow the path that person meant to choose . Saying something and doing another .

I've never heard anyone speak of renouncing the spirit of any given sin as a matter of course in a confession, except on one retreat, which was deliverance-focused. Thank you! That should be standard procedure everywhere!
It is a good message, but it can be taken too far. In some deliverance circles, they view all sin as spirits outside themselves and it gets to the point sin becomes something one is afflicted by and not something one chooses to commit. That's not good thinking.

The way Protestants usually confess is primarily through prayers to God, then admitting struggles to fellow Christians for accountability and prayer support, and in some cases, a public response to an alter call at the end of a sermon or service.
Matthew Terry Oh ok! the fact that you are open to the validity of Confession as a sacrament is a great sign. I know many Evangelicals that think every sin is already forgiven for the baptized in faith, regardless of whether they ask God for forgiveness and repent, aka saved for life. But then, what was the point of Jesus giving the Apostles the power to "bind and loose sins" and giving Peter the keys to the Kingdom if their belief is true? I've heard different rationalizations of that verse from them, all essentially boiling down to "it was mostly a pointless gesture"
Peter Kaminsky if Protestants you’ve met, think that, they don’t believe what their official doctrine teaches, they made up their own. Every Protestant denomination teaches to confess your sins as their official stance. It’s just the “what that looks like exactly” that people differ. Every Christian branch, catholic, orthodox, or Protestant teaches this here -

Confessing sin is crucial. It is the pragmatic means of repentance. And Without repentance, there is no forgiveness.

and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem

Every time I watch Fr. Mike I always imagine who would have filled his shoes if he did not have he courage to end his relationship with his then girlfriend in order to answer the call to priesthood. I also applaud his girlfriend back then for allowing him to join seminary with her blessings. Truly God is working through you. How I wish I had the same experience

Rita Harming “Agere Contra!” - St. Ignatius; ie “Do the opposite of the ritual/compulsion.” Get Fr. Thomas Santa’s book Understanding Scrupulosity. It will help.
Dear Rita, I am a former life-long Catholic but left because only God can forgive sins. Only He knows if you are making a sincere confession. The priest can't read your mind. Martin Luther had the same problem of scrupulosity, but when he read Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord," a light went on and he was overjoyed. Wages are what we earn, but no one can merit eternal life no matter what we do, Jesus did it all. Hope this helps.

I came in the Catholic Church in 2011 and love going to confession to keep me in line.

When I was a Protestant there was a process called inner healing which is like you said on 5:13 renouncing sins in the name of Jesus. Now that I’m Catholic and defending Catholicism. I see the similarity. Although, I find it so rewarding that I can go to confession as often as I want and experience the same cleansing and freedom. Inner healing was not offered to me but twice in 18 years. When I went back to Catholicism last year, I was not sure about confession. I see that God always leads us to the right people or priests to explain things. I wish Protestants would understand the Catholic Church and that confession is biblical.

We base our faith, not on any other book except the Bible. If one were only to have the Bible, what would confession of sin look like?
Please: please...Give me one passage in the New Testament where a sinner is to CONFESS TO A PRIEST. We are no longer under the Old Testament, the Old Covenant. We have a BETTER COVENANT and BETTER PROMISES, says the Bible

We do not ever confess to a priest, because the Bible says: Hebrews 7:23-24, “The FORMER PRIESTS were many in number, because they were PREVENTED BY DEATH FROMM CONTINUING IN OFFICE, but HE holds his PRIESTHOOD PERMANENTLY, because HE CONTINUES FOREVER.”
THIS PASSAGE IS CLEAR; IT LEAVES NOTHING TO PERSONAL INTERPRETATION -- WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT FOR YOU TO SEE AND TEACH THIS????

the Bible THEN INSTRUCTS YOU WHAT JESUS MEDIATES:

Please give ONE PASSAGE OF SCRIPTURE where in the New Testament, under the New Covenant since the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ where any author of the New Testament books had given instruction to confess to a priest. GIVE ME JUST ONE!!!!

the Bible has much to say about anyone who attempts to follow Christ and attempting to keep the Law of the Old Testament. Paul says a person is cursed, anathema if that individual brings in ANYTHING of the old practices of the Old Testament to the New Practice of faith bought for us by God's Son, Jesus Christ. Some things Paul says in the book of Galatians alone, but his writings are infused with such sentiments which he states he received as DIRECT REVELATION FROM JESUS CHRIST, PERSONALLY (Gal. 1:2):
The priesthood instituted under the Law of Moses, described in detail in Exodus, Leviticus and Deuteronomy, is not done away with (Hebrews 7). Under Jesus Christ, there is now the priesthood of all believers (Please read 1 Peter 2:5,9). So. Why do you distinguish yourself as and individual that other individuals must come to a confess, since the Bible forbids it???
Paul states directly and forcefully in the book of Galatians, teaching ANYONE ABOUT KEEPING THE Old Testament LAW, YOU ARE DOING THIS:
-- you make children of a bondwoman (4:31)
-- you have put on a yoke of slavery (5:1)
-- you rebuild what Paul says he worked so hard to destroy (2:18)
-- you have nullified the promises of God (3:17)
-- you are kept under tutors (3:25)
-- you are kept in custody (3:23)
-- you are under guardians and managers (4:2)
And Paul has so much more to say... READ THE BOOK OF GALATIANS ENTIRELY TO GET WHAT IS COMMANDED AND REQUIRED OF US.
Paul says this about Himself:
[Gal 1:15-16 NASB] 15 But when God, who had set me apart [even] from my mother's womb and called me through His grace, was pleased 16 to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with flesh and blood,
Paul did not consult with flesh and blood, should you not do the same.
READ YOU BIBLES FOR YOURSELVES!

What I do know, however, is that Jesus brought us a - as in 'one' - message of salvation. One Gospel implies one body of believers which preaches and teaches the same message and truth in all places and at all times. This, then, is what we refer to as the Catholic Church. One Lord and one Gospel; one body and one faith. Excellent and beautiful.
My message to you is: read what the early Church preached and taught; let's say the first 500 years after Christ came into the world. Study, my friend; read about how the early Christians understood the Gospel and practiced their faith...! The only prerequisite to do so is humility and integrity, and the willingness to embrace truth at all cost...!

We all make mistakes... this includes you and me, correct? How then should we trust in our own interpretations of Scripture and opinions regarding the Revelation? We are not infallible, right? Therefore, we can be wrong on any of the doctrines we adhere to, correct? Still, so many people go by their own interpretations and the result is so many different churches and gospels worldwide, all made by men. This is what we commonly refer to as Protestantism. Man-made religion. Man-made Churches. Man-made gospels.
In all objectivity, my friend. Then how can you write that you go by the Gospel? If you go by your own understanding of the Bible, then how would you go by the Gospel? The Gospel is one message that we are to accept: not any message that we are to extract ourselves based on our personal understanding of Scripture. If we do, who goes by the Gospel? You? Me? Arius? Donatus? Calvin? Wycliffe? The local Pentecost preacher at the corner? Or it doesn't matter? Any Gospel will do? Is that what you are saying?
Can this be found in the Bible? My answer is: yes. Paul and John discuss new teachers who bring other gospels in length. This is something for you study, my friend. But first please give me your answer to this most important question: can you be WRONG and if so, will you admit and will you return to the Catholic Church? Can you please answer?

I have got to say, I have definitely had that feeling over and over to the point I went to a different church to spare father at least a little annoyance. It really does help to hear that it not an uncommon thing.

I feel with many of these videos I am taking remedial Catholic education. Why does that make me smile? I am on the cusp of being old.
I am old now and I find that I can always learn something again or new. Btw 66. It may not seem old but it is to me. And I am still a work in progress, I am glad Jesus isn't finished with me yet.

the Bible has much to say about anyone who attempts to follow Christ and attempting to keep the Law of the Old Testament. Paul says a person is cursed, anathema if that individual brings in ANYTHING of the old practices of the Old Testament to the New Practice of faith bought for us by God's Son, Jesus Christ. Some things Paul says in the book of Galatians alone, but his writings are infused with such sentiments which he states he received as DIRECT REVELATION FROM JESUS CHRIST, PERSONALLY (Gal. 1:2):
The priesthood instituted under the Law of Moses, described in detail in Exodus, Leviticus and Deuteronomy, is not done away with (Hebrews 7). Under Jesus Christ, there is now the priesthood of all believers (Please read 1 Peter 2:5,9). So. Why do you distinguish yourself as and individual that other individuals must come to a confess, since the Bible forbids it???
Paul states directly and forcefully in the book of Galatians, teaching ANYONE ABOUT KEEPING THE Old Testament LAW, YOU ARE DOING THIS:
-- you make children of a bondwoman (4:31)
-- you have put on a yoke of slavery (5:1)
-- you rebuild what Paul says he worked so hard to destroy (2:18)
-- you have nullified the promises of God (3:17)
-- you are kept under tutors (3:25)

-- you are under guardians and managers (4:2)
And Paul has so much more to say... READ THE BOOK OF GALATIANS ENTIRELY TO GET WHAT IS COMMANDED AND REQUIRED OF US.
Paul says this about Himself:

My colleague who is a Catholic born & who is now Born again. Always reminded me of my Confessed sins which I repeatedly keep confessing yet rpeatedly doing😁 I always say that Confession was unlimited, I'm always prep up with excuses. So I guess after hearing today's talk from Fr. Mike, I know that we no longer have to be conscious and ashamed of our repeated sins because it is after all a wonderful gift to get closer to God❤
This is a big problem with Catholicism in my opinion. How do Catholics find motivation to change their sinful behavior if they keep being forgiven? This enables them to continue living the same way and it enables them to live in denial. I think they go to Confession so they will go to heaven. This is how they are raised. I think Catholics have built a reputation to be liars and this is why the religion is losing their following. You can live in denial if the Catholic Church enables you to. This ritual that you are describing may make some feel better but it still enables them.

Hi Alan, I recently had my 1st confession n let me tell u that the feeling we get afterwards is so amazing that is worth the nerves. Confession is reconciliation with God he won't judge you he just wants u to come to him with tell him ur sins.
First off congrats! Secondly, I am a convert as well and went to confession for the first time when I was 22. I was anxious and nervous as well, but it will be worth it! “ A brief moment of discomfort is far better than eternity in hell”. You are not alone! Many blessings!

I wish I would’ve known this years prior, since I struggle with OCD and I am on the spectrum. Being told by my priest to never commit those sins again made me think I was a terrible person and thus I didn’t want to confess anymore because I didn’t want to face the fact that I was weak and I relapsed in my behaviors. Now I know they key is to renounce my sins in Jesus name so that I can repent fully and not just seek forgiveness thank you 🙏🏼 ❤

Yes. You're right. Some find it difficult to avoid sins, especially when they have the vice of committing the same sin. It is possible to avoid sins, not alone, but by the power of God's grace. Thus we grow in our love of God and the more we grow, the more we avoid sins. Usually in confession, I say "I have been *insert sin here*" and then because I always forget to say it once I finish confessing, my priest asks me "are you truly sorry these and all the sons of your past life?"

It will be nothing but a short miracle from God himself. To stop a bit from war from centers. It is something we fight tooth and nail to overcome because we really have to.
I struggle with this because admittedly, the more I read the Bible the more sins that I become aware of. And I think I may have religious OCD (Scrupulosity). I notice sin everywhere I turn and everywhere I used to take pleasure. It's made me really depressed and ashamed to learn that I'm not supposed do those things that I enjoy such as: telling crude jokes, lusting after women etc. I'm single but I don't even want to date anymore for fear of falling back into sin. I don't know what to watch on T.V. anymore. I spend an enormous amount of time scrutinizing over the Bible to the point where I've become unproductive because I see sin in my work as well. I work in the entertainment industry and much of the content is crude jokes, cladly dressed women etc. Which I have learned that the Bible warns us to turn away from such things. I used to have fun with these things and I'd be so relaxed about my sins because I thought, perfection is not feasible anyway so I should just focus on not hurting anyone. But now that I read the Bible it seems like I set up my own false standard. The Bible says “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.”
I'm working on it. But then why am I so depressed? Is this normal? I have seen treatments that recommend for one experiencing this to purposely commit sins until you retrain your brain to accept the uncertainty of what lies in the next life. But that seems utterly terrifying and unbiblical to me. Any advice?
Ugh. I get so embarrassed when I go to the same priest and repeat my sins...especially if it’s not a long time period between confessions. I just think in my head that he’s thinking ‘YOU again?’ And I’m trying not to make eye contact hoping he won’t recognize it’s me haha But through confession I am discovering where I’m broken. And that is good information that I can only learn THROUGH confession. I can make better decisions if I know what I’m up against but I feel like so often we don’t want to really face those ugly things about ourselves. Thanks Father-you da man!

Confession can be awkward especially in a smaller community. It's ok to go to a neighboring parish to confess.
I once confessed the same sins to the same priest 3 or 4 times in one month. That was really awkward but the awkwardness itself at least helped me to combat the sins better.
