This hits home for me. I am a nobody, but Flea's story mirrors my life and my feelings about so many things. I too in 84 was with my friends and someone put on the original Garage Days EP Am I Evil and I was like, what is this???? It was like nothing I had ever heard before. I immediately went out and bought Ride the Lightning and Kill em all. They changed music like so few bands have over the years. I am lucky enough to have seen them play at the Aragon Ball room from the 3rd row right in front of Cliff when I was 16/17. To me Cliff made such a big difference in that band. The first two albums were mind blowing, if you weren't alive back then, the only way to hear new music was the radio and all they played was classic rock, Led Zeppelin, the Eagles you really had to dig to find obscure music, college radio was better, but not great. It is hard to describe hearing something for the first time like this when the heaviest thing you hear on the radio is Black Sabbath. They were ground breaking. Flea was the best person to induct them, by far. He gets it. The one thing that Flea said, non Metallica is sing your song. I love music more than anything and play guitar but, never got into a band. That is my biggest regret in life at 51. To youngsters, don't hold back fight your fears and be who you are, or you will regret it.
That's some real, meaningful insight, and some radical honesty, including about spirituality. All that is truly good is divinely inspired, including the best angry noise. It's what people need, it's who we are, and its even what we're for.
Love the speech and in terms of music i have so much respect for flea for his brilliant bass playing, well played bud, well played.
