This is an excellent demo. I will go out on a limb and say that you cannot go wrong with any of the Dover Drives. Buy one and be done. They sound so damn similar it's not funny. I own both the OC42 germanium (cream white version) and the BC178 silicone and while I do notice a difference, I doubt I could tell them apart in a blind fold test after being away from them for a while. I kept both and lowered the bias on the silicone to be a little more fuzzy. Absolutely killer pedals. I won't let go of mine.
Thanks! I definitely agree in regards to the 178 and the OG I have, but the germanium is much more a fuzz than an OD, that thing has some magic in it and I plan on snagging one or two more to make sure I always have one in case something bad happened! At some point I want to do this again, there are some differences between them that aren't really shown by setting them at the same settings. They're still subtle in the grand scheme of things, but someimes the secret sauce is in the subtleties!
You can try hitting Sean up on Instagram via the Lovepedal page, I heard that’s where he responds the most. Also, I contacted him via the Lovepedal site’s Contact info and he answered me right away, but I heard that’s spotty for others. Might have been good timing on my part.
Night and day - the black germanium. No comparison. It sounds rounder, fuller, more "vocal" - hands down. On high settings, definitely more "chewy" than the others.
I liked the gold the best. I have and old school build and one from real early when there was only one build (which I like more than the olds school build). The older one is dark and creamy and a little more compressed in a good way. I just ordered a diver drive oc24 germanium in the flash sale this weekend
I just snagged one of those OC24’s over the weekend too. But, after placing the order I realized it will be shipped to my old address (haven’t used PayPal in several years and forgot to update my info). I’ve tried contacting Sean through the Shopify site but haven’t heard anything for a couple days. Do you know a good way of contacting him?
@@adamlee6946 Good luck man, these folks are impossible to deal with if you have a problem with anything. I even offered to pay for information on where to get a part to repair one of these. Absolutely unresponsive.
So did the 0c24 sound similar to the one here? I think it’s a rare case where none sound better overall. The classic sounds best for solos or riffs , the gold sounds best for arpeggios or some palm muted things , the germanium sounds best for big beefy moments , but none really will sound universally best
Thanks for doing this! I could not hear a difference when you were playing power chords, but when single notes were played, I could. I have a white unit but maybe the BC178 is the way to go. Seemed to have the most clarity. What's your favorite and why?
The germanium is my favorite, it's like an easy-to-use Fuzz Face and is actually quite close to the EJ Fuzz Face, tonally, but easier to play into with more variation when rolling the volume knob down on the guitar. I love them all though! The 178 has less mids than the old school, aside from that they're VERY close to each other. The bigger differences pop up when using less gain, which I should have done more of in the video.
I have the first iteration of this pedal. One thing I had done was mount an external pot, and tie it to the inner bias control, so it becomes a very powerful tool for crafting tones.
Sorry for the late reply, I never remember to check my notifications! Almost any time I use them they’re after another pedal or two, I’ve used them after a couple pedals, notably a Fuzz Face, wah and a Vibe, no real difference in Dover goodness!
@@DrewJD awesome! Thanks for the reply! I've already bought one and I love it. And yes, I've found it does work well anywhere in the signal chain. Good times
Btw the classic one has best tone for solo-y stuff . The scooped tone it has is a little less present than the others but it gives it more dimension and vibe .
Ooh ok. I think the 042 is also germanium no? I thought I read that . Haven’t heard a video do it though , wonder how close it sounds to the germanium version here
Yeah it was the Fractal with IR's, though I do have a quick video of the old school and the Germanium coming out of actual cabs a couple videos back on my channel.
Can't say it does, however, the footswitch itself is considerably easier to engage than the other two, like it's a soft switch instead of a true bypass switch. Not sure if it's mechanical or what, but no loud pops on my end!

Wow - I didn’t even realise there were different versions!
Good demo Rev! Straight up comparison. All sounded pretty good. Think I like the BC-178 the best though.
I have this pedal but it died on me. It turns on but no audio. Does anybody know where I can take it to have it fixed?

I have one of these, but I swear that fuzz up there and a green od make an even more satisfying sound.
Different tools for different jobs!

I’m crying I missed that sale!!!! I want EVERY version of these made, ESPECIALLY germanium ones!!!!!

Do any of these have to go first in the signal chain? Can I put them in the middle of a pedal board? Any impedance issues that you have noticed?

Is the original oc42? Or is the germanium the oc42?
Tryna figure out how to identify between those two

Neither are the OC42, I missed out on that one, damnit!

@@heythere6983 It is germanium indeed but not sure how it compares the GE itself yet. Waiting to find one for a reasonable price before I snag one!
Anyone know what type of transistor is in the white, old school Dover Drive? Maybe Silicon?
cool, thx for posting. are you using a real amp, or are you using model amps and irs?
It's listed in the drop-down box.

Hey! Does the BC178 pop pretty loud? I just got mine yesterday and it pops as loud as my knees when I squat
