I love your videos , you are amazing artist and your tutorials are very informative. You explain everything very clear and in details. Thank you for all you do for us !
I tried Liquidtex gesso on ingress paper (Canson Mi Tientes) with much success. First did it to practice instead of wasting pastelmat. The pastel sticked well using finger blending and I was able to do light over dark. Happy with the result.
My first attempt at working with pastels was using that basic pastel paper, and it was such a turn off I lost interest in pastels immediately. I'm so glad you discussed this topic. I have Pan Pastels, and I've done some nice work on Stonehenge and Mi-Teintes. However, I think I'm going to have to try Pastelmat. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this review. I just started out with soft pastels and was quite disappointed. My paper couldn't hold many layers at all. I'm definitely going to try one of the papers that you recommended. I love working in layers.
Velour is a completely different kettle of fish and has to be handled differently. Hard to semi hard pastels are essential to underlayers on velour - such as the square conte pastel sticks. Very soft pastels will not do well on it.
Another point in Pastelmat's favour is that you can actually wash off the pastel and start again. You will still have some staining from dark colours, but for someone like me that is learning, it makes the pastelmat more cost effective. I was really interested in your results because I was thinking of trying some Canson Touch, but was worried about the expense. With the Pastel Card, I had a sample in a box of Sennelier and it was fabulous, but way too expensive for a newbie to experiment on: more for an expert like yourself. I have also read that the Sennelier can't cope with even a tiny touch of moisture so you have to be very careful when using it. Thanks for the review!
There are beginners and beginners and my beginner is a bit like a three year old child's attempts in comparison to yours. :-) But as they say, practice makes perfect so I keep trying! Hopefully in the new year I will be signing up to your Patreon channel (too committed time wise and financially at the moment) and will learn from your great tutorials. The internet really is fantastic for connecting people across the world.
Hi Jason, thank you for such informative tutorials. Have you used Cansom Mi Tientes Pastel paper (not touch)? I used a sheet for a portrait. Used panpastels and coloured pencils. After a number of layers, which includes spraying with workable fixative, the color started to lift and wouldn't take any more color. Do you know why? Have I over worked the paper?
Strathmore is maybe good for sketching with pencil, but for pastels not. LuxArchival is a very good sanded paper that will give you several layers but is very expensive. Been wondering if gluing sandpaper to backing board wouldn't be a good idea, just haven't tried it yet.
What do you use to blend the rougher, sanded papers? I learned how to paint with pastels using my fingers to blend, and found it difficult to work with sanded papers when I tried them.
Thanks for this Video. I tried out Velour. It's a different looking and hard for beginners to work on it. Otherwise the best Paper ist Pastelmat or Pastel board. It is much easier to work on it. I think the best cheap Pastels for Yelour are Jaxon Pastel Sticks. The Faber Castell pencils don't work very good in it. The Carbothello does it better. So you have to try out what works best for the one who draws.
Could you possibly review different sandpapers? I don't mean the sanded paper for pastels. I've just recently started with pastels and as a budget option, I grab 9x11inch sheets of sandpaper from the hardware store. So far I've only tried 400 and 1000 grit. 400 gave me absolutely solid colors and blending while 1000 was difficult to blend but I didn't have much dust. I think I got about 20 sheets for ~$8 but I'm in Japan so it's a bit more expensive here.
im fixed on making my own pastel paper we got a marble shop couple blocks away. just gotta stop over and get some marble dust. im wondering if anyone would be interested in wanting me to send them some marble dust. i dont have clear gesso so just gonna use an acrylic paint mix the marble dust in it. ive never even used real pastel paper guess i think its to expensive plus i love love love love making everything i can myself if i can.
In Spain, Pastel Card from Sennelier isn't much more expensive than Pastelmat. Sennelier arround 12 € - two sheet and Pastelmat arround 11 € - two sheet.
I am new to pastels, but I have heard so much that canson mi tientes paper is so great for pastel, so I am left wondering why this video makes it sound impossible to get good layer drawings with anything but very expensive card papers... It seems to me it must be a matter of workable fixative?
Hi James You are amazing. I did a cheater today and the drawing was fab but to try and layer round the eyes etc awful. Do you ever do a class in real life only I am self taught and have several wins in competition BUT I WANT TO KNOW MORE and I can't see head or tail of your sites etc. HELP
ok thanks for the review.....i have been working with color pencil for sometime now..so for a change i recently bought some soft pastel sticks and daler rowney murano pad online. i haven't received it yet. hope the one you just tested isn't murano ;)

Canson Mi Teintes is honeycomb type paper, not ingres type.
Great review!!! Thank you.
Great video Jason! 😆 Very helpful...so much out there, but only so much in the pocketbook. I will have to take a look at pastelmat.
Simple and accurate explanationS. Thank you
Thank you for sharing this, it's been a huge help and save me money in the long run trying all them myself.

Seem like the Velour paper is the one to use for dreamy paintings!
Thank you for this review, I finally saved up enough for pastels and have been anguishing over what paper to buy

I've used Polychromos pencils on velour to draw wildlife and had good results
Very helpful! Thank you.

i use synthetic paint brushes, i have a brush for each color family and make sure to wash and dry them between each painting
