I am a beginner to woodwork, the main test I have with this bundle ruclips.net/user/postUgkxTNB_zFBSnTo_O1PqfVUwgi7ityw0JlKt is that I think that its hard to settle on a choice of the plan and outline to use as there are a large portion of them there. Nonetheless, I like the simple stride to step directions laid out there.
Before cutting the brass thread to length, put at least one of the nuts from the 'insertion tool' on the thread up against the knob. Then when you cut the thread you can use the harder steel nut to push the damaged end of the thread back out so you can file it to a clean point - just keep the nut on the threaded rod until you can thread the other nut on, then wind them both off. This tip brought to you by my 1960's metalworking shop class. You also rub (blackboard) chalk on your file to stop softer non ferrous metals from clogging the teeth, which is right PITA to pick out.
That definitely works if that's the only option you've got. In my case I happen to have a metalworking lathe and milling machine so whenever I cut a threaded part down I do it in the lathe. Part it off a little oversize, face it down, and cut a beefy 45 degree chamfer on the end, deburr with scotchbrite/fiber wheel. I've done the nut trick many times with much success but since I've got a lathe, I just use that.
What a nice useful tool that looks so easy to build. It's so cool that the kit includes all the is needed. The comminuty need more of these kits. Nice job Rex.
Is there a woodworking community award for best collaborations that we can give to TayTools. Between this and the other tool/portable workbench videos with various creators, y’all are making the world a better place.
Pretty slick kit. I really like this style because you can add a couple screw inserts in the bottom for attaching auxiliary fences and plates. This is the basis for a very versatile and wholly custom tool. Excellent job Rex and everyone involved.
Rex, I greatly appreciate your videos, and the time, experience and knowledge that goes into their making. After watching one on the building of your router plane, I bought one of your kits for my 13 year old grandson. It is to be a birthday gift for his 14th, coming up in 3 weeks. Now I just have to wait for him to visit so I can give him the gift, help him put it together and teach him how to use it. (He lives 650 miles away and is tied up with travel team baseball for most of the year.). I have already got him running my wood lathe and on his last visit he turned out a very creditable mallet. I hope his interest in wood working sticks with him and grows. Otherwise I'll spend my last days worrying about my wife disposing of my Lie Nielsons and Veritas planes at yard sale prices. Again, thanks for thevideos. At 73, I'm never to old to learn.
After I assembled my plane kit and watched James Wright's video about cutting a second groove, I had a flush of inspiration. I could have cut a groove across the width of the lower piece of wood as a storage slot for the second cutter. I could hold it in place with the second threaded insert and a screw, but would probably have cut pockets to install a pair of magnets in the upper half. Magnets are geeky and fancy and would allow for toolless exchange.
A tool to be proud of. A better mouse trap? Oh, yes! I can claim a bit of makership too in this process. The Compass Rose router plane has pride of place in my shop. Thank you, RK and MT.
Wow. I've scoured the internet for DIY router plane designs and this one stands out. The design is so simple and easy to build. Yet it is very functional. I want one of these.
You’re the man Rex! Love that the kit includes the pre-shaped wood too. Very thoughtful and makes supporting Compass Rose a no brainer. Can’t wait to build my first router plane with this!
Thank you for creating this kit. I have been searching for a vintage router for the last year but the prices are only going up. I was about to try making my own but since you did all the work, I’ll try yours first. Thanks again!
Would love it if you did a wooden rabbet plane kit! I noticed that Red Rose Reproductions sells plans and a tapered iron, but I think that it's too advanced for a beginner like me. I would definitely pay extra for preselected stock and the main angles machined in.
I ordered the kit and a set of blades just to mess around a bit. This is awesome. You keep coming up with good ideas and I'll keep giving you my money.
Well done. I like the kit idea. Still “mine” but without the hard to build (and to find) parts. I also like the full disclosure on all of the parts origins. So many things that are “made in the US” obviously aren’t. I.e. the parts are only made overseas, and they do what you’re doing or just final assembly. Its a global economy and you’re reflecting reality. I’m walking your book now and enjoying it so much. Almost done restoring a jack plane from an antique shop. I’m learning a lot and getting so much out of it. One day I’ll get to my dream of a hand built partscaster and I’m really thankful you’ve laid out baby steps to get there vs me aiming too high, failing, and giving up.
Well dang, I literally just got the paul sellers kit the other day. I’ve been wanting a bigger mortising plane for a while and thought it’d be nice to support a creator, it seems really nice but I like that this one has the wood with it.
Paul's has 2-3 Times more pieces, especially some metal ones. I like this design more not only because it looks more comfortable in my big hands but also because I can source 25cm of handrail basically for free. Only trick would be the cutter, but for this hot-bent old chisel should do
What a fantastic kit! Great work Rex! Massive shame that customs charges to the UK would nearly double the price, but it’s wonderful to see an affordable kit out there. Keep up the great work!
A tip for those Tennons to cut the whole thing as normal but leave a half inch or so on the tip so you can bridge across the whole flat. It's a bit of a pain in the cutting process but that reference surface will speed up the fussy finish work. Then just cut that bit off near the end.
Fantastic looking kit, Rex! Really nicely done! 😃 It's difficult for us from Brazil to buy things from the US, but... Some day I'm going to! Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Nice kit! Have you thought about one for a marking gauge. I made one off your video but used a screw insert for locking it, you could use the same thumbscrew from this kit and it would look great!
Well, your timing is excellent. it's my next tool in the woodworking for humans journey. 🤣I'm thinking I may just go with the blades, as I want to make the mortice and wedge myself for, you know... practice! Thanks, Rex!
On the subject of making it extra long for cleaning up tenons/half laps, would there be any value in setting one up with the blade 75-80% of the way to one side, dedicated to that task? Or would that work against you since you would only be able to work in one direction / couldn't flip it around? Thinking in terms of either cleaning up really long half laps, and maximizing how much is registering to the face.
Hey, just had an idea, why not sell a version of the router kit “without” the blades, for those of us who want to make the slot bigger to accommodate chisels we already have? Save a few bucks and keep some redundant steel out of the toolchest for those of us working without shops 😄. Just realized this “after” I made the kit, of course. Can’t wait for the glue to dry!
It looks good, Rex. Was it Rob Cosman who suggested a router plane depth can be increased by the thickness of a sheet of paper by simply placing a piece of paper between the router and the work? I am in the fortunate position of not needing one of these, though, because I have a 71 made by Anon.
It seems like a great value. Someone can learn a good bit from building and using the tool. I think Rex is trying hard to give good value and still make a living.

Me: OK that's the two grooves for the chisel blade slot, now to remove the wood between them to finish the slot. What I really need here is a router ... Oh. Wait. 😒
You can get a metal router plane from china for about $10-$20, wouldn't that be a better option for many people? Unless you want to build your own of course. Although, with a kit like this there's hardly anything to build. Am I missing a detail here as to why this device is a better idea?
I will say that you get what you pay for in tools.... cheap tools usually means poor steel or poor attention to detail that you have to put a lot into trying to rectify. Almost every time I have tried to go cheap and new... it wasn't worth the money and time. I have done the paul sellers router. I like the screw adjustment... but I also have a Continental router plane (grundhobel) that doesn't have a screw depth. Easy enough to adjust with the "smidgen adjustment" (placing a piece of paper (or two or three) under each side and dropping the iron for a little deeper cut) If I didn't have the routers I have already, I would certainly jump on this kit! I think it would work a treat!

As a tech channel I am usually interested in a different type of router but I take this one this time 💪😁
You'll never regret having a router plane;)
Ingenious a lot simpler than the kit I purchased from England, which works great
Looking forward to putting this together.
Good on you for making this tool, I hope you're business does well!
That said, this video is an advertisement, not your usual content...
Just placed my order. Thanks for providing something for us beginners!
All the best in this and all your other tool endeavors, Rex! This is an exciting chapter!
Nice plane! Welcome to the plane making world.
Awesome Rex! Compass Rose is out of the gate with some excellent products.👏
Looks great, Rex! Very useful tool, I can second you on that!
Done. Looking forward to getting my kit. Love your vids, always have.
Will be interesting to see how this compares to Paul Sellers' router kit. 🙂

If you want to build this kit with power tools, It's gonna be very easy and fast. A very well thought out design.
What a fantastic kit! Great work Rex!
Massive shame that customs charges to the UK would nearly double the price, but it’s wonderful to see an affordable kit out there. Keep up the great work!
Paul Sellers also has a kit and he's in the UK
Check out Paul Sellars router plane. He has a DIY kit too.
I have an antique version of this, works great.
At 2:44, do you need a router plane to make that housing? 😉
I do love my router plane.

Big fan of your work Rex, my next project is making a laminated Japanese hand plane, have you ever made one?
Nice looking kit! I'll definitely be picking one of these up. Router plane + project in one? I'm there, dude.
Fantastic looking kit, Rex! Really nicely done! 😃
It's difficult for us from Brazil to buy things from the US, but... Some day I'm going to!

Can’t wait for the next kit you come up with.
Nice kit! Have you thought about one for a marking gauge. I made one off your video but used a screw insert for locking it, you could use the same thumbscrew from this kit and it would look great!
After you chisel out the groove for the cutter, you know what would be a perfect tool to cut that groove to the perfect depth?
I was thinking that too...
Hammer a nail into your bench, file the top to a sharp edge, and you have an upside down, single use whole bench router.
So much of woodworking tools (from scratch) reduces to: "If you want to make a tool that does , first, do ."
Looks like a good kit. Paul Sellers is doing something similar for UK chippies😊.
Great idea! How about a mallet kit??
Paul Sellers also has a router plane kit. Would be interesting to compare.
Awesome !!!!!!!!!
Hi Rex , is it available in UK.
Thanks.
Well, your timing is excellent. it's my next tool in the woodworking for humans journey. 🤣I'm thinking I may just go with the blades, as I want to make the mortice and wedge myself for, you know... practice!

Thanks for sharing that!
Is it okay if I use your build as a general road-map? I think I'd carve the pieces out of some dry logs I have around.
I'd love to build one based on your design from about three years ago, but at the price you're offering, I'm really tempted to save myself some time.
I think they're going to sell out. Get it while you can... also while it's still on sale.
Outstanding
Wow! Yes! Love it!
Good job. Were you at all influenced by Paul Sellers' router plane kit which he launched a year ago?
On the subject of making it extra long for cleaning up tenons/half laps, would there be any value in setting one up with the blade 75-80% of the way to one side, dedicated to that task? Or would that work against you since you would only be able to work in one direction / couldn't flip it around?
Thinking in terms of either cleaning up really long half laps, and maximizing how much is registering to the face.
For that, build a "false bottom" that extends the sole out to the side. Make it removable.

Rex has already made one, and I think this is his.
If I hadn't already made a router plane with a chisel based on one of your videos, I would definitely be getting this. How about a spokeshave kit?
Are the blades made by Narex?
I have nothing to say really, but I appreciate your content, and wish to help with the yt-algorithms.
Excellent.
I wouldn't mind getting my hands on those blades, but New Zealand isn't on the shipping list unfortunately.
Great idea. I will be ordering this kit. How about a kit for a shoulder plane?
Just got my kit today. Looking forward to finishing it.
I literally waited to watch an infomercial. I was waiting for the part when he gets to say wait that's not all.
Hi Rex, can you please add UAE to the list of countries your shop ships to, many thanks as always for all your great content
Hint: Put a nut on that bras bolt before you cut it. Then when you unscrew the nut, it will clean up the threads at the cut.
Great Idea, Rex!
Can you tell me the cost of shipping to the UK, please?
I couldn't see this on the order page.
It looks good, Rex.

Nope! That was me!
Hey @RexKruger! I would like to buy the kit from Italy
You posted this yesterday. I made a router plane from a bit of wood and a chisel a couple days ago. The horrors!
Make some modifications to that tool, add a metal rod, and you could have a sharpening jig for all your lathe gouges! 😁
thank you
Just bought the one from Rocksmith/Paul Sellers a couple months ago. My budget for router planes is blown.
Nice!

Rex and LPL have very similar hand movements 🧐
Question: is the cutter angle 45° ?
Can I use an old 35° chisel and make my handle/block 35° to match?
In kit desxription You can ready that bevel angle on blades is 25. Go figure!
Do I need a router plane to cut the dado in my router plane?
I jest, of course. :)
Hi Rex! Great kit, congratulations, sadly I cannot buy it, I'm from Mexico, will you have shipping to Mexico soon? Thanks
Yes, soon

Not very likely. Assembly would double the cost. The kit is what makes this affordable.
